Excerpt

James Campbell knew what to expect. A breeze whipped up against the cloudless blue sky, and soon turned into a wild wind that tore through the canyon carved into the Broken Back Range. It chilled him to the bone, even though the noonday sun beat upon his shoulders.

“Steady.” He held tight to the reins with one hand and stroked the horse’s neck. “Good boy, Blaze.”

The skin on the back of his neck prickled, and the hair on his arms stood like a tangle of spider legs. The wind abated as swiftly as it had started. He stared toward the canyon. New South Wales had suffered an extreme drought, hell, for that matter so had most of Australia.

His dog whimpered.

“Ruby, come on, girl.” He patted his thigh to encourage the pup. She was barely a year old. An Australian kelpie, chocolate brown with a hint of red, and while she enjoyed being out here at the creek instead of the apartment, he understood there were many new things that created some nervousness. Hell, even he had to shake off a chill. He ran a hand inside his shirt. Sweat clung to chest hair. The sweat of fear? Nah, the legend was based on rumor, and the bloody thing kept alive by the curious.

Ruby slunk through the tall, dry grass.

“That’s good. There’s nothing to fear.”

With binoculars raised, he scanned the banks of the creek. The normally still water rippled like someone had skipped a rock into its midst. The sounds—moans that whispered through the grass and rustled the fronds of the willow trees—had been soft today, like a mother crooning to a baby.

Stuff it. Those sounds were purely scientific. They happened when the coastal breezes met the heat of the valley and channeled through the narrow gully. He turned the chestnut gelding, pushed back the brim of the Akubra, and wiped his brow. Binoculars dangled from their strap and bounced against his chest as he headed for the stables. He took off Blaze’s saddle and tossed it over the stall door, rubbed him down, then released him to the lower paddock.

Whatever the hell is going on here, it will be okay. It has to be.

He ambled across the dry land toward the old house, kicking at the red dirt with the tips of his boots. Inside, he pulled a bottle of water from the ancient refrigerator and strode to the front verandah. He loved Crying Girl Creek, but there had been difficult days. So much loss over the years, and that weakened a man. He sat in Grandma’s old rocker. Memories he needed to dig into, things that might help him heal, flooded his senses. After the anniversary of the legend, then he’d give them some thought.

EXCERPT

Grief, guilt, heartbreak, fear, loss, and abandonment all swirl in my head, creating a vortex of pain and confusion keeping me awake.

Three days ago I was planning a future with the boy I love. Cyrus was going to come back to the Union with me. We were going to figure out a way to warn the citizens here or stop the attack. Together. Now his brother is dead and Cyrus stayed behind, unwilling to abandon the rest of his family.

The scents of honeysuckle and fresh-cut grass float on a late summer night breeze. I stare up at the clouds from the chaise lounge on the balcony. A thick marine layer inched its way in from the coast hours ago, blanketing the sky and obscuring the stars I was hoping to see. With the moon hidden and the Union lights off for the night, darkness envelopes me.

Over the soft murmuring of desalinated ocean water burbling through the aqueduct, I hear the door slide open behind me and sit up. My bio-dad, Eddie, walks out and takes the spot beside me.

“Can’t sleep?”

I shift to my right, giving him more room. “No. You?”

He shakes his head, his cinnamon-colored wavy hair sweeping across his shoulders. “My grandmother used to say if you can’t sleep, it means you’re awake in someone else’s dreams.”

That’s a comforting sentiment. Is Cyrus dreaming about me right now? Or is he like me, too afraid of the nightmares to close his eyes?

Eddie presses his lips together and studies me for several long seconds. “Are you ready to tell me where you’ve really been all summer?”

His question catches me off guard. I thought he bought my story, the one I told him when I came back. The one Lisa fed him while I was in the Ruins. Posing as me, she texted my mom and Eddie from my tablet with regular updates on our fake adventures sailing off the southeastern coast. When I first showed up here yesterday afternoon, he didn’t seem to care where I’d been or what I’d been up to, only that I was here at all. I’m definitely not ready to have this conversation with him.

“I don’t know, are you ready to tell me where you were for the first twelve years of my life?”

He shifts his weight on the chaise next to me and sighs. “I don’t know how many times I can apologize.”

“You think another ‘I’m sorry’ is going to fix everything?”

He rubs his palms on his thighs and stands. “You’re welcome to stay here as long as you’d like, but you might want to ratchet the anger down a few notches.” He moves toward the door before turning back. “You’re going to have to forgive me some day.”

I raise my head and turn toward his dark silhouette. “Why? You think sending me a ticket and letting me hang out with your new kids makes up for everything?”

“No,” he says quietly, “because hanging on to all that anger and resentment isn’t healthy.” He walks back into the house, sliding the door closed behind him.

With a heavy sigh, I fall on my back and stare back up into the blackness. Seriously? After being nothing to me for three-quarters of my life, where does he get off being all parental right now?

Book Blitz - Two Witches and a Whiskey by Annette Marie with Giveaway

Two Witches and a Whiskey
By: Annette Marie
(The Guild Codex: Spellbound, #3)
Publication date: February 8th 2019
Genres: New Adult, Urban Fantasy

Three months ago, I landed a job as a bartender. But not at a bar—at a guild. Yeah, the magic kind.

I’m not a badass mage like my three smokin’ hot best friends. I’m not a sorcerer or an alchemist, or even a wussy witch. I’m just a human, slinging drinks like a pro and keeping my non-magical nose out of mythic business. Seriously, I know my limits.

So why am I currently standing in a black-magic ritual circle across from a fae lord?

Somewhere behind me, my three mage friends are battling for their lives. Somewhere near my feet is the rogue witch I just knocked out with a stolen spell. And I have about five seconds to convince this very angry sea god not to shmoosh me like a bug.

I’m pretty sure this wasn’t part of the job description.

EXCERPT

Shouts burst from Aaron’s table in a mix of triumph and dejection. Half the table lifted their shot glasses and tossed them back, Aaron included. He slammed his glass down and growled.

“That one wasn’t fair,” he complained. “Lyndon, your turn.”

Surveying the gathering, I counted most of our top combat mythics—from mages like Aaron, Kai, and Laetitia, to sorcerers like Andrew, Lyndon, Gwen, and Zora. Even Girard, the first officer, had joined in. This was the elite faction of the guild—the ones who claimed the toughest jobs and took on the deadliest opponents.

Ezra was part of the circle too, but he’d slid his chair back and didn’t have a glass. He never drank much, stopping long before he got tipsy.

Whiskey bottle in hand, I leaned against his chair. “What’s going on?”

“Drinking game,” Ezra replied with a grin. “Going around the circle, each person shares something they’ve done or experienced on a job. Anyone who hasn’t had a similar experience has to drink.”

“Since Darius covered it so thoroughly,” Lyndon declared, “I want to know. Who’s been bitten by a vamp? If you haven’t, cheers!”

Groaning, Aaron downed his refilled glass. Wasn’t he happy to be vamp-bite-free? Or maybe he was so many shots in that he’d prefer pointy fangs over more liquor. Laetitia, Gwen, Andrew, and two others drank as well, but Kai didn’t.

Zora pushed her sleeve up and displayed an ugly half-circle scar on her forearm. “The bastard nearly ripped a chunk out of me. It happened back at my old guild and their healer wasn’t top- notch.”

As various mythics whistled appreciatively, Lyndon pulled his shirt collar aside. A similar scar marked the spot where his neck and shoulder joined. “She drained a solid pint before my team caught up. I don’t normally relish a kill, but that one didn’t bother me.”

They passed the whiskey around, refilling their shot glasses.

Andrew, a skilled defensive sorcerer and frequent team leader, leaned back in his chair. “I want to see who hasn’t tripped and fallen on their face in the middle of a fight. And when you drink, we’ll all know you for the liar you are.”

As everyone laughed, Kai alone lifted his shot and downed it. Smacking it on the table, he raised his chin in challenge. “Who’s calling me a liar?”

I snickered when no one said a word. If there was ever a mythic who hadn’t wiped out in a battle, it was super-ninja Kai.

Girard stroked his beard. “My turn, isn’t it?”

Aaron and Kai exchanged despairing glances.

Smirking, Ezra half-whispered to me, “Girard will try to make everyone drink.”

The officer shot him a grin, then lifted his glass in a mocking toast. “Not to get too macabre, but Lyndon brought up kills, so. If you haven’t seen at least six bodies in one place, drink.”

“What?” Gwen pointed accusingly. “What kind of horrific shit have you been sticking your greasy beard in, Girard? Who stumbles across six piss-reeking corpses?”

Ah, Gwen. Every time she opened her foul mouth, I had to fight the urge to laugh. With her sleek blond ponytail and penchant for designer business attire, she looked like a high-end executive— an impression she ruined whenever she spoke.

Girard wagged a finger. “Drink, Gwen.”

Scowling, she tossed back her shot. Everyone else lifted theirs—except Aaron and Kai. Their smiles had vanished, their expressions grim as they stared at their shots like they wished they could drink too.

An uncomfortable silence settled over the table, then Zora grabbed my arm and pulled me in front of Ezra’s chair. “Tori, you do one!”

“Uh, me?”

His drunken grin back in full force, Aaron took my replacement whiskey bottle and stuffed a full shot into my hand in its place. “Give us a good one, Tori!”

I blinked around the table, packed with the guild’s best warriors. What could little ol’ human me say?

What had I done that none of them had? Well, there were a few contenders. Flown with a dragon?

Made a darkfae scream like a sissy girl? Punched a rogue druid in the nose? Problem was, I couldn’t talk about any of that.

My gaze dropped to Aaron. “Who here has thrown a drink on three mages at once?”

Laughing groans circled the table. Even Girard had to take a shot.

“Wait!” Laetitia lowered her whiskey. “I spilled a coffee across Darius, Tabitha, and myself once. Does that count?”

The table debated, then decided it counted. Zora gave me a commiserating slap on the hip, making me stumble backward into Ezra, still seated in his chair. He steadied me with a hand on my waist.

“Good try!” Zora exclaimed. “You almost had it, but no one’s managed to make everyone drink yet.”

“Tori could have,” Kai interjected. “All she had to do was say ‘kissed Aaron.’ Then we all would have lost.”

The guys howled with laughter and Aaron snorted.

Zora turned to Alistair, an older man I knew only as the most powerful mage in the guild. He was rarely here, too busy hunting the scariest bad guys both in the city and outside it.

“Last round, Alistair,” she said. “I can’t handle any more whiskey, so this is your final chance to claim ultimate victory. Go big or go home.”

Alistair tugged thoughtfully on his snow-white beard. Deeply tanned and weathered, with full- sleeve tattoos on his sinewy arms, he oozed badass-ness. I leaned forward, eager to hear his challenge.

“Hmm. All right, this is mine: Who among us has fought the ultimate opponent?” His dark stare roved around the table. “Who’s fought a demon mage?”

No one moved. A wordless ripple passed among the mythics as they assessed their comrades’ reactions. Cold, tangible fear crawled through the eerie silence. Then, in near perfect unison, they lifted their shots and drank.

… It’s what I’ve been working for. Even though I still want to finish school and get my associates degree, I know I want to get my foot in the door with personal training.

Thankfully, Becky walks through the door, nothing but skintight yoga pants, a white sports bra, and grinning widely at me. I don’t date, but if there’s a girl that I’d call a constant in my world, it’s Becky. No fuss, no muss. We keep it clean, with no strings attached.

“Hey, Taylor,” she says with a smile.

“What’s up, Becks?”

Leaning against the counter, her breasts are on full display; she doesn’t have to try very hard to flaunt them. They’re fake, but hell if I care. “How about that raincheck tonight?”

I groan. “Can’t do it tonight, heading out of town.”

Her exaggerated pout makes my eyes find her lips. “You’re no fun.”

“How about tomorrow night? Cal and Ethan are celebrating.”

“Oh.” She perks up with excitement. “Celebrating what?”

“They’re branching out. Cal’s finally opening up his own place.”

Eyeing me carefully, she looks around, dropping her voice. “Oh, are you gonna be joining them?”

“Not sure yet. Cal says it’s an open invitation, so we’ll see I guess.”

Leaning closer, she licks her lips. “You should. I’d love some more one-on-one time with you.”

“Oh, I don’t see that being a problem, no matter where I’m at,” I answer, lifting a brow. “You still have my number?”

“Of course.”

“Hit me up tomorrow, and I’ll tell you where we’ll be at tomorrow night.”

Her eyes linger on me as she walks into the gym, behind frosted glass doors. Micah chuckles behind me.

“Seriously, if there is anyone that you might as well just date, it should be Becky. I actually think she’s starting to like you.”

“You’re crazy.”

“Seriously.”

“Come on, Micah. She knows the score.”

He shakes his head, shrugging. “Okay, but don’t say I didn’t warn you. Would you ever think about trying something with her?”

I quirk an eyebrow at him. I know exactly what he’s talking about, but I don’t feel like having an honest conversation right now. “As a matter of fact, Micah,” I pause, making him give me a suspicious look, “there’s a whole lot of things I’d still like to try with her.”

He starts laughing. “And on that note, I’m gonna clean the locker rooms. Freak.”

Release Blitz - For a Song by Lori Power

The Gentle Surf Series, Book 3
Contemporary Romance
Date Published:  February 13, 2019
Publisher: The Wild Rose Press

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

“For a Song” is set on the southern tip of the California coastline, on the island of Coronado. Here, on the wide, golden beach fronting the historic Hotel Del Coronado, watching the fishermen at sea, you can see the purple hue of the mountains of Mexico on the horizon.  Assumptions plague our characters in this book.

Our hero, Trip Vincent is on trial for killing his business partner—the lead singer in their band. Of course, he is found not guilty since he wasn’t even driving the car. However, in this digital age of social justice warriors rampant on the internet, he’s been found guilty by the public at large and his fan base. The shame and remorse of not doing more to save his best friend, lead Trip down the same path his grandfather, Reginald once took—the bottle. Trip seems likes he on the road to ruin until he meets Aya, a mysterious, pixie-like woman who happens to “appear” in his life when he needs her the most.

But Aya didn’t just happen to appear. She’s a drifter who’s been trying to shake the bonds of her weed-like roots for years. From the moment the band purchased one of Aya’s song and sang it to gold on the charts, she has been closely monitoring Trip’s career. What started fascination over his family’s musical roots and their tie to the Island of Coronado turned in beguilement of the man himself as he stoically persevered during his trial. Throughout his court case, Aya knew there was more to the story and made it her business to uncover the truth and see it was placed in the right hands, so he could get back to the business of music.

When he doesn’t get back to singing, her need to meet him in person steps over the line. Her line. His line.

Now Aya must ask herself is she a stalker who fell in love because Aya isn’t who she appears. Evasively eluding government officials has been a number one priority for years. As the grand-daughter of the most notorious presidential assassin, she and her family have always been presumed “guilty” by mere association. Of course, it doesn’t help that both her grandmother and mother profited from this association focusing more on their bank accounts and then the destruction of the act.

How could she possibly make Trip understand and try to build a life with him. Just when he makes her believe her “happily ever after” could happen, she must leave.

“For a Song” is set in modern America, where misinformation and disinformation has become the status quo. But does it have to be? Can these characters look beyond hype and see the truth of their relationship and the potential for more?

Like the other books in this series, “For a Song” is fraught with the high drama of social and family expectation, as well as assumptions and miscommunications. For each of our lead characters, our hero and heroine must learn their lessons and decide how to move forward—alone or together. And, as always, this is a romantic novel first and there is the “happy ever after”.

“For a Song” is a fast-paced story that offers both adventure and humour, while never forgetting about the passion and attraction. The immediate sexual tension compels to climax. These characters thrive on gratification. The reader won’t be disappointed.

Praise for BREAK THE BODIES, HAUNT THE BONES

“A tour-de-force of the imagination. Hicks has created a world that is beautifully and brutally surreal and yet, at the same time, BREAK THE BODIES, HAUNT THE BONES stands as a hyper-realistic psychological portrait of the death of the American factory town. My own identity as an American was disturbed and changed by this novel; some dormant understanding was shaken awake. This is a stunning and profound debut.” ―Julianna Baggott, bestselling author of New York Times Notable Book Pure

“Hicks’ debut novel is a thoughtful tour of the rotted and haunted heart of America. Highly recommended.” ―Jeremiah Tolbert, Shirley Jackson Award-nominated author

“I can’t stop thinking about this book. It’s a haunting story that burrows under your skin like an insect laying eggs that hatch within you in the middle of the night. Hicks’ mesmerizing imagery kept me turning the pages and asking myself ‘How is this book happening? What sort of literary witchcraft am I witnessing?’” ―Maurice Broaddus, author of Buffalo Soldier and The Usual Suspects

“BREAK THE BODIES, HAUNT THE BONES is a breathless wonder of a debut novel… Hicks is a magician with words and has written a spellbinding, haunting and necessary book.” ―Anne Valente, author of Our Hearts Will Burn Us Down

“Hicks has crafted a haunting story with multi-generational appeal, where the very real horror of poverty meets supernatural horror, and social issues like xenophobia, racism and economic anxiety are addressed organically through allegory and gripping storytelling.” ―Chris L. Terry, author of Black Card and

SYNOPSIS

Swine Hill was full of the dead. Their ghosts were thickest near the abandoned downtown, where so many of the town’s hopes had died generation by generation. They lingered in the places that mattered to them, and people avoided those streets, locked those doors, stopped going into those rooms . . . They could hurt you. Worse, they could change you.Jane is haunted. Since she was a child, she has carried a ghost girl that feeds on the secrets and fears of everyone around her, whispering to Jane what they are thinking and feeling, even when she doesn’t want to know. Henry, Jane’s brother, is ridden by a genius ghost that forces him to build strange and dangerous machines. Their mother is possessed by a lonely spirit that burns anyone she touches. In Swine Hill, a place of defeat and depletion, there are more dead than living.

When new arrivals begin scoring precious jobs at the last factory in town, both the living and the dead are furious. This insult on the end of a long economic decline sparks a conflagration. Buffeted by rage on all sides, Jane must find a way to save her haunted family and escape the town before it kills them.

Meeting the Bleeding Man

His hand is on his gun. His seat belt is off. He wants you to run, because he will chase you, and he will catch you, and that will be all the reason he needs.

He knew. He must know. The earth was soft under Jane’s shoes, her sneakers turning in the mud. She struggled not to fall, going down the slope to stand by his open window. The ghost fed her every flashing thought from the man’s head. Little fantasies of violence licking out. The feeling of hands around a throat. The smell of gunpowder and rasp of a whetstone. The tension building in his chest like an oil well ripening to explode.

Now that she stood by his open window, Jane could see his face. The officer’s eyes were bloodshot and his lips cracked. He was balding, and his hands trembled on the steering wheel. A small trickle of blood curled from his ear, and she wondered for a moment if he was hurt. More blood issued from the corners of his eyes. Clotted around his fingernails. Leaked drop by drop from his nose and stained the beard around his mouth. She didn’t need her ghost to tell her that the man was haunted.

Jane made herself smile, shoving her anger and fear down her throat. “Yes, sir?”

“That’s your robot. I saw you with it.” His tone was pleased and justified, like he’d caught her doing something and knew she would deny it.

He doesn’t know. But be careful. Don’t contradict him.

She enunciated each syllable, speaking soft and clear, as proper as possible. “Did it do something wrong? If it did, I’ll make it right.”

The man’s teeth were stained dark. “That’s all I want. To make things right. It’s not right to replace people with things.”

“The robot just helps my mom around the house. Her ghost is really bad, so it’s hard for her to take care of us.”

He nodded. “I know something about bad ghosts. I’ve had mine a very long time.”

“I’m sorry to hear that.” Jane swallowed, waiting, but her ghost was silent. “Was it someone close to you?”

“A suspect. He ran. My gun went off.” The officer gave a pained laugh, pressing a fist to the side of his head. “I tell it every day that I’m sorry. That it was an accident. Still, it’s angry.”

Jane hated the man for forcing her to talk to him, for making her sympathize with his pain when he was so ready to hurt her. She kept the rage off her face. “The robot is mostly junk. A lemon. It could never work a real job. My brother’s always having to fix it.”

“Your brother.”

The man’s anger shifted from her, finding a new target. Jane didn’t know whether to be relieved or afraid. He wiped the blood pooling under his eyes, smearing it in two wide bands across his face.

“So he’s the one responsible?”
