Human, private detective Anna Caill isn’t keen on the prohibition of magic enacted by the 18th Amendment, but she won’t deny it’s good for business. The coppers couldn’t care less about the witches’ problems, giving her any number of clients to choose from.
When mysterious witch Jesse Hunt saunters into her office, he and his case will test her limits. While a killer stalks the magical underworld, Anna is hired to find Jesse’s friend, the high priest of an ancient coven.
As her case unravels, Anna is forced to confront her addiction to a dark spell in this urban fantasy noir.

Shuffling outside the frosted-glass front entrance made me
try to squint past the backward letters that declared my name and profession.
They were blacked out as a shadow approached.
I reached for the revolver Dad had given me when I’d taken
over the business. The weight of it in my hand was reassuring.
I held it at the ready but dropped it low near the hem of my
knee-length skirt. With my free hand, I unlocked the door and cracked it.
“Ms. Caill?” a silky male voice asked. “I apologize for the
early hour, but are you available now? I’d like to hire you.”
I sighed in relief and put my gun back in my handbag.
“Of course, come in.”
I turned on the overhead light and moved farther into the
room so he could enter.
Hat in hand, he sauntered in. He was like amber bourbon, warm
and soothing to look at, but his demeanor was as cool as the ice that clinks in
the smooth glass. I knew a taste of him would burn all the way down. His
golden-brown hair was disheveled as if he’d been worrying it, but his light,
brown eyes were unruffled.
