BLOG TOUR & GIVEAWAY ~ Dead Calm by Annie Anderson

Dead Calm
Annie Anderson
(Grave Talker, #3)
Publication date: June 29th 2021
Genres: Adult, Urban Fantasy

There’s not enough coffee or tacos in the world to deal with Darby Adler’s family.

If it’s not her death-dealing father, her back-from-the-dead mother, or her ghost grandfather, it’s her long-lost siblings and their bid for power.

With the ABI radio silent and her siblings to find, Darby’s got a major problem on her hands—especially when the local coven figures out that her father is no longer bound.

Can Haunted Peak, TN handle this family reunion?

Goodreads / Amazon

I needed a vacation.

That was the headline that blasted across my thoughts as I stared at the note that had been so carefully placed on my counter. I was supposed to be going on a teensy getaway with Bishop. After the bullshit we’d gone through over the last few days, taking some time off had seemed paramount. Taking a brief pause from my contemplation, I found my shirt and yanked it back on before continuing my internal deliberation.

As I stared at the cardstock, the devil on my shoulder was making a solid case for ignoring literally everything in my life, packing a bag, and hightailing it to some undiscovered corner of the map with no cell service which could only be accessed by boat. At this point, I was considering moving into a yurt or something just to not have to deal with the utter shitshow that had become my life.

Angel Darby began arguing in favor of staying to find my psychopath of a brother, while Devil Darby was still painting pictures of Bishop and me wearing very little clothing in a hut on the beach, sipping Mai Tais. I had to admit, Devil Darby was winning that fight, hands-down. And what did the line “Your mother can’t protect you anymore” mean?

As far as I knew—and that wasn’t much when it came to Mariana, but still—she hadn’t done a damn thing to protect me a day in her life. This damn note was a taunt—a dare. And I didn’t like it one bit.

Without much thought on my part, I yanked a paper towel from the holder and picked up the note to inspect it. There wasn’t a damn clue to be had on the thing, at least not to my naked eye.

You know that means you could just pretend you never saw it, right? Just drop it like a hot potato and scamper off to a cabin in the woods with Bishop.

See? Devil Darby had a solid plan.

And what happens when X doesn’t just stop at notes? Then it’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre time with a side of Halloween for dessert.

And there was Angel Darby coming in for the buzzkill.

BLOG TOUR & GIVEAWAY ~ Generation of Vipers by Maria Ann Green

Generation of Vipers
Maria Ann Green
Publication date: June 18th 2021
Genres: Adult, Gothic, Psychological, Thriller

Rosabella Moore-Davis has just moved her husband halfway across the world, with a spur of the moment purchase–a glorious gothic mansion–while on vacation in France. It was love at first sight, and somehow she knew it was more than just some huge house; it was meant to be her home.

But not all things that are meant to be end happily ever after.

Rosabella soon finds herself waking in the middle of the night from more than just wind and creaking pipes. In the dark she discovers ghostly figures looking up into her windows from outside, rooms and treasures previously hidden for centuries, creeping crawling guests, and too many dark shadows lunging toward her. And still, somehow, instead of screaming and running away she researches, choosing knowledge over fear, and learns more about the house and the history of this place she loves so much.

Only when she stumbles into the past, meeting an aristocrat hiding enough deadly secrets to take down the patriarchy, does Rosabella start to regret her choices. And after having come this far, she worries it’s too late to turn back and save herself from a house that has more skeletons in its vast amount of closet space than anyone expected.

Rosabella isn’t the fleeing type, but she’s not sure she’ll survive the fight. Especially against a place with so many stories buried beneath it, burned into every fiber of the edifice, a house with a portal to dark places and troubles that shouldn’t be stirred up.

Generation of Vipers is a mix of crimson peak and Mike Flanagan’s Haunting of Hill House, with elements of Marisha Pessl’s Night Film mixed throughout.

If you like dark thrillers that border on horror, gothic elements, and deliciously dark twists that will keep you guessing, then Generation of Vipers might be your next favorite book. It’ll keep you reading just one more page all night long, too afraid to turn out the light and go to sleep.

It appeals to lovers of suspenseful plots, all things dark like thrillers and horrors, stories with murder and mayhem, dark romance elements, fans of American Horror Story, Shirley Jackson, Gilian Flynn, Ruth Ware, Tana French, J.A. Konrath, and the Timothy Blake Series by Jack Heath.

A clatter of too many noises all at once. Like the banging ofspoons on pots and pans, something that elicits flinching and sour faces, making my ears ring and a little dot of pain form just behind my left temple.

Tierney screams. It mirrors the burst of sound that came from me in the library. Or rather, as I exited the library.

“Oi!” Alice yells as she stands upright in one shot. It knocks the chair over that had, just a moment ago, been holding her up. And now it’s on the floor.

In the very same movement, Tierney is jumping up too—though she manages to scoot her chair back just enough in her scramble to prevent it from crashing down and adding to the chaotic noises. And my neck is sure to hurt for days from the whiplash I’m putting it through as I try to figure out what exactly is going on.

Tierney had been in the process of bringing her glass to her lips for a slow sip, but instead, the green liquid is now all over what had been left on her plate, all over the white linen runner on the table. But worst of all, it’s all over her beautiful dress now too.

I can only imagine what it will do to the fabric, stickiness will be the least of her problems.

But finally, finally I see why almost every other person has jumped up from the table, scooting to the outer edges of the spacious room.

My eyes widen first and then narrow to slits as I watch a huge spider crawling across the cream tablecloth. When its feet find the Chartreuse, it skitters to backtrack. Running into the obstacles of flatware and continued screams, the huge black thing doesn’t seem to have a plan for what to do next.

Tierney’s shrieks subside, but once they do, I can hear Gabriel’s running monologue that had been covered until now. “Merde. Salope. Enculer. Merde, Merde, Meeeeerde,” he mumble-shouts, like his body can’t decide between the terror, wanting to yell, and the need to keep the thing from jumping at him in surprise from a sudden burst of curse words.

Finally, his panic takes over, and like his wife, Gabriel, the last to move away from the chaos and toward the safety of an exit, knocks over his chair. Only when his crashes to the hard floor, it’s not just the sound that erupts.

From beneath Gabriel’s plate skitter several more spiders. Three, no four, five—six more spiders start dancing across the spilled food and soaking fabric. These are bigger ones. Fat with the bloat of recent meals. And even from here, almost as far as I can be from them while still sitting at the table, I can see they’re hairy.

The kind of critters that fill nightmares.

Author Bio:

Maria, a badass USA Today and internationally bestselling indie author, lives in Minnesota despite the frozen winters. Actually, she prefers snow drifts and icicles over summer and all that sweat running everywhere. She writes about bitches, breakups, and bloodbaths – not in any particular order. She lives with her husband and little family, which includes a few lazy cats who make great lap warmers. You can usually find her whishing that she lived in a secret cabin in the woods where she could be a hermit reading and writing all of the time. Instead she lives the suburban life where she pretends to her neighbors and the other moms around that she doesn’t swear like a sailor, have hidden tattoos, and loves a good bottle of wine. She absolutely believes in unicorns and ghosts and hopes vampires and monsters are real too. She’s a coffee-in-the-morning and alcohol-in-the-evening kind of person, preferably with a nap in between. Maria prefers cats over dogs, books over people, and late nights over early mornings. She probably shouldn’t talk to anyone until she’s had her first cup of coffee, extra sugar. And if you ever want to hang out with her, you’ll have to be game for a horror movie or just a quick run to target for two (hundred) little things. Also, you couldn’t pay her to be in her twenties again; Thirties is where it’s at. She’s a creative, mouthy, introverted, proud bisexual, highly-sensitive INFJ, chronic pain spoonie warrior, Slytherpuff, dork with a sweet-tooth.

Maria devours books, reading mostly in bed or listening to audiobooks in the car. Writing has been one of her passions for pretty much her whole life. So creativity is a necessity for her, always. After working in the mental health field for almost a decade, she’s now living her dream as a stay-at-home writer, kiddo wrangler, professional snuggler, and constantly-tired-person. When it comes to her writing, she specializes in dark and twisted thrillers or gritty, angsty contemporary romances. But no matter the genre, she always prefers writing deeply flawed characters with dysfunctional relationships. She’s pretty sure the whole “unlikable character” thing is a conspiracy because every character she loves have been labeled this way. Ridiculous. And because of this, she’s pretty much found it impossible to write anything without at least a little mayhem.

Maria was once told she painted with her words, and that phrase stuck with her – because writing really is an art, and good stories are true masterpieces. She’s always trying to grow and improve in her craft, shooting for a masterpiece of her own someday. And she plans to write forever because writing gives Maria the ability to disappear into new worlds and create people within twisting plots, all from the comfort of her couch. She will always believe that though not every story is for her, and her stories aren’t for everyone, every story has a reader.

Dr. Medina took his time in the room, reading her chart. He set it down on the counter in front of her bed, and Valentina took the opportunity to turn to me. She mouthed, oh my gawd, dropped her jaw, and fisted her hands to motion humping the air. My eyes widened with alarm, and I begged her to stop, waving her down as discreetly as I could. Dr. Medina didn’t notice a thing.

“Valentina, I look forward to being on your care team.”

“Thanks, Doctor,” she said while batting her eyelashes. She was so obviously flirting with him, and I couldn’t help but smile. I approved of anything that would bring her spirits up, and if that was Dr. Medina, then I would gladly throw him into the fire.

Dr. Medina caught me grinning like an idiot as we walked into the hallway. He rolled his eyes. “Stop,” he said sternly.

“Stop what?”

“You know what.”

“You must get that a lot, Doctor,” I said, batting my eyelashes just as Valentina had. His eyes narrowed. I only stopped when I noticed the set of his jaw, and I wondered if he was too stiff and serious for a bit of joking banter. I checked myself and schooled my face back to its professional side.

“I apologize, Doctor. I forgot myself. If it makes you feel any better, that’s the first time I’ve seen Valentina smile in weeks. Her spirits have been really low. With all due respect, if interacting with you will help her emotionally, I’m willing to sacrifice your dignity a bit to her whims. On the whole, she’s harmless.”

“I feel used, Dr. Ramirez,” he said before turning to walk away from me. He shook his head all the way down the hallway, but I could swear, even by just looking at the back of his head, that he was snickering.

(Affiliate links included.)

"Yeah, you’re no friends to her," Julian says. "Now, I suggest you head back the way you came. We don’t want any trouble, do we?" he asks, letting his arms drop from his chest to his sides.

His fists ball and clench, putting the muscles of his forearms and biceps on full display. The simple movement reveals his tattoos in a way I didn’t notice before. There are more of them—a lot of them. The flickering flame of the gas lantern above him illuminates the images on his arms in a way that’s mysterious and...intimidating. The question is, will they take the warning or are they too wasted to care?

I hear mumbles that I can’t make out and finally, the shadows turn and disappear. I realize then I’ve been holding the little breath I have and give in to the exhaustion of my muscles.

I exhale and drop to the aged concrete beneath me, resting my head against the cool brick of the building behind me. If I had the energy, I’d hate myself for leaving the house, for putting myself, and Julian, in this position. But as it is, I don’t have energy for anything other than regulating my lung’s exertion and ignoring the smell of dirty seawater and sewer that invades my being.

Chapter 7

There’s a burst of energy as everyone jumps up, packing their things away.

I push my work into my bag, wondering why nobody is talking about what just happened. As I stand to leave, Charlie steps in front of me, blocking my path, two Angelettes behind her. She thrusts out her hand towards me, a piece of paper in her fist. It takes me a moment to register what it is. As I do, my stomach tightens.

She steps towards me. ‘What’s this?’

‘None of your business,’ I reply. ‘It’s not yours.’

She begins to read. ‘You are invited to Bea’s Birthday Tea.’ Her voice is mocking. She smirks. ‘Aw isn’t that sweet? Little Bea’s birthday tea.’ The girls behind her giggle. ‘When is it?’ She glances at the invitation. ‘Ooh, tomorrow! How exciting.’

‘Give me that. It’s not yours! You’re not invited!’

‘Aw. And I really, really, really wanted to go too. Boo hoo.’ She sticks out her bottom lip.

‘Give it me!’ I try to snatch it, but she pulls it away, lifting it high.

I can feel my cheeks burning. ‘Where did you get it?’

‘I found it on the floor. Somebody obviously didn’t want it.’

Of course they didn’t. Why would anybody want to come to my birthday?

I realise I’m trembling. ‘Liar!’ Charlie watches me calmly, amusement in her eyes.

‘Aw is little Bea going to cry?’

My body sways, the air in me compressing. In my pocket, I feel heat sparks from the coin, fire rushing through my muscles. I lunge forward, and before I know it, I’ve slapped Charlie square across the cheek. The smack resonates from the walls. The other girls step back, shocked. Charlie’s head tilts but her feet remain planted. She freezes a moment, but then slowly turns back to face me. My palm is tingling. It feels as though I’m watching from above. A crimson bloom spreads across her cheek. My body is ready to react, ready to fight, to defend myself. Nobody breathes. Charlie’s eyes are steel. She holds me in her gaze. Coldness floods my limbs. But then, she turns and marches away. ‘Come on,’ she says, ‘I’m not wasting my time here.’

Without looking back, she leaves the classroom. The two Angelettes scamper after her, glancing back over their shoulders.

I stand, frozen.

What have I done?

The pressure behind my eyes throbs. My hand stings.

This isn’t good.

I imagine my invite on the floor, abandoned and trampled.

That’s all I am. Discarded. Nothing. A great big cross.

I imagine Poppy laughing as she drops it. "Why would I want to go to that?"

I blink, trying to hold back the tears, but I can’t. Hot wetness trickles down my cheek.

I don’t want anyone to see me like this. I can’t. They hate me as it is.

I grab my bag and run, knocking a desk as I fly from the classroom. Pushing through the crowds trying to avoid the rain, I dash out of the school, ignoring the shouts of a kid I shove out of the way. I think I hear Aisha calling me, but I keep my head down. I don’t want anybody to see me.

Why would they want to come to my birthday? Stupid!

The rain is torrential now. It stings my skin.

Past the swimming pool. Over the lights.

Storm Callum is heavy overhead. The rain mingles with my tears.

Up the High Street. Along Berry’s Passage.

My foot slips on the wet stones. It sounds like the scraping of the trapped pigeon.

A big cross.

Wrong.

That’s all I am.

Sodden hair whips my face. My fingers are numb.

I don’t stop running until I’m home.
