For Chance, there's always only been Dakota.

He's been in love with the girl since the day they met. He's tried everything to get her to notice him and nothing has worked. So when things suddenly start moving in the right direction, Chance can't believe his luck.

Until Kyle comes along.

Kyle is like a new shiny toy and Dakota loves new and shiny. She falls for the tall, blonde and gorgeous fast and without looking back. Dating the summer before college wasn't in the plans, but come on, Kyle is perfect. So why does Chance and his snarky grin keeps popping up in her mind now that Dakota has found her happiness?

When Chance's world comes crashing down, Dakota proves the strength of their friendship, surprising herself and everyone around her, by helping him pick up the pieces. In return, Chance is finally able to crack her hard shell, discovering that not everything is sunny in Dakota-land. Her world is not what it seems on the outside, and together, they're able to pull each other to the brink of safety and sanity.

Dakota likes that things are simple with Kyle, so why does she feel more like herself around Chance?

As graduation grows closer, both Chance and Dakota learn that the plans you make for your life don't always play out the way you expect them and sometimes, everything starts to make sense when you find yourself on the edge of falling.

Chance

I spot Grayson first, since he towers over a lot of people. Then, Brook who is eagerly waving in my direction like we haven't seen each other in weeks, when in reality it's only been three periods. Automatically, my eyes scan for Dakota but I don't see her or...Kyle anywhere. See, I can use his first name like a mature adult.

"Brook, long time no see. Have you lost weight? Dyed your hair?" I ask, watching as my friend bounces up and down on her heels.

"Har har, Chance. I know I'm excited to see you but wait till I tell you what I'm excited about!"

"She's been like this for two hours. You try dealing with her." Grayson's words receive a punch in the arm as the rest of us chuckle.

"Don't talk about me like I'm not here," she says sternly to her boyfriend before turning her attention back to me and tugging me to sit beside her. "Okay, just hear me out." I give her a puzzling look, waiting for an explanation. She has that serious look in her eyes and I'm almost afraid of what comes next.

"So, Dakota and I've been talking." Oh great. "And you know how she's going to that party with Kyle?" I'm trying not to remember that fact. "Well, we decided we'll all go. And then, because next week are the school administration conference days and we have a long long weekend—"

"Brook—" Suddenly, I know where this is going.

"Come on, Chance. Pretty pretty please can you beg your dad to let us go up to the cabin? Pretty pretty please."

"Okay, I don't care how pretty your please is. It has no merit in my world. I'm a man."

"Chance, darling. Sweetie. Honey. Handsome. Bestest friend ever." Brook grabs my hand, holding it in two of her own.

"Grayson, you okay with your girlfriend calling me all these names? And physical contact?"

"If it gets us the cabin." He's grinning ear to ear, enjoying himself as usual.

Last summer, my dad bought a cabin in the woods in Northern Arizona and Brooklynn has been begging to go up there ever since. Dad had his coworkers using the place so it was off limits for a while, but now it's back to us and apparently Brooklynn remembers everything I tell her.

"Chance!" Brook grabs me by the shoulders, shaking me a little. "You know you want to."

"Someone please restrain her," I whisper, mock horror on my face. She can be scary when she gets this single minded. It's not that I don't want to spend almost four days in a secluded location with Dakota. It's just that I don't want to spend almost four days in a secluded location with Dakota.

Yes, I know how much sense that makes. Just about as much sense as me being still hung up on a girl that barely looks at me. Well, she looks at me. With annoyance usually.

"Why does Chance look like he's swallowed a sour candy?" that voice that hunts my dreams says from behind me. I turn as Dakota and Kyle come up to our little group. My gaze instantly zeros in to where they’re holding hands. Well, this is new. Breathe, Chance, breathe.
