Coffee Mysteries Optioned for TV/Film

I'm so excited for Sandra Balzo and her Maggy coffee shop owner character. She just signed the movie/TV rights. I hope it's a TV show that runs as long as Murder She wrote! Congrats, Sandra.

From Publishers Lunch:

Film Rights: Sandra Balzo's Grounds for Murder, set in a small-town coffee house, featuring a sleuth-owner and her colorful friends and customers of Uncommon Grounds, to Hartwell Media/Robert Halmi Jr. (Farscape)producer, by Nancy Yost at Nancy Yost Literary Agency.

Books are often optioned and--yes, yes, I know--most are never exercised, meaning the shows are never made. Still, I'm just thrilled. The eighth book in the series, Murder on the Orient Espresso, came out this past December, but the first--Uncommon Grounds--was published in 2004 after multiple rejections. And six years. (I'm persistent, if nothing else.)

I'll keep you informed as we move along. IF we move along. But nonetheless, YAY!

All the best,
Sandy

Synopsis

Hairstylist Azalea March is looking forward to a wild weekend in Las Vegas with her friends. Oh, sure, they’re supposed to be there on business, attending the biggest hair show on the west coast, but that doesn’t mean they can’t have a little fun. But fun quickly turns to drama. On the first morning of the show, Dhane, the biggest celeb of the hair-styling world, is found dead. As it urns out Azalea’s friend, Vivian, not only knew Dhane, but the tale she weaves of how they met is faker than a showgirl’s uh… assets. When Vivian confesses to the murder and is arrested, Azalea knows there’s no way she could have done it and suspects Vivian may be trying to protect someone. But who?

Aalea now has to convince Alex, the sexy detective from her past, to help her prove Vivian’s innocence and comb through clues more twisted than a spiral perm. But the truth is stranger than anything found on the Las Vegas Strip, and proving Vivian’s innocence turns out to be more difficult than transforming a brunette into a blonde.

About This Author

Best selling author, Beth Yarnall, writes romantic suspense, mysteries and the occasional hilarious tweet. A storyteller since her playground days, Beth remembers her friends asking her to make up stories of how the person ‘died’ in the slumber party game Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board, so it’s little wonder she prefers writing stories in which people meet unfortunate ends. In middle school she discovered romance novels, which inspired her to write a spoof of soap operas for the school’s newspaper. She hasn’t stopped writing since.

For a number of years, Beth made her living as a hairstylist and makeup artist and co-owned a salon. Somehow hairstylists and salons always seem to find their way into her stories. Beth lives in Orange County, California with her husband, two sons, and their rescue dog where she is hard at work on her next novel.

Interview

Welcome to Kelly P’s Blog!

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and how long you’ve been writing?
My name is Beth Yarnall and I’ve been writing single title length mysteries and romantic suspense for about 6 years. Before that I wrote short stories and poetry. I live in sunny Southern California with my husband, two sons and our rescue dog.

Please tell us in 20 words or less, why we should read your book.
Hairstylists. Vegas. Murder. A lawyer named Amber Hooker and a too hot to resist cop. What more could you want?

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?
I loved writing these characters. They were so alive for me and had me laughing at their antics as I wrote the book.

What kind of research (if any) did you have to do for this book?
I’m a hairstylist and have been to a hair show in Las Vegas. This was one time where I could actually draw from my real life!

What’s your favorite quote about writing or reading?
‘And each book has to receive your best effort every single time. No slacking.’ ~ Nora Roberts

What inspired you to write this book?
All of my stories begin with the first line and then the characters. The first line of Dyed and Gone is ‘It was like being drop kicked into a Lady Gaga video.’ I knew there was a story in that line.

Dyed and Gone is actually my third try at getting this story and these characters right. My first two efforts will never see the light of day, but I learned a ton from those books.

If you could visit anywhere in the world for 1 week, where would you go?
Somewhere beachy and hot. Hawaii would be heaven. I’ve been twice, but I’d love to go back with my kids.

What was the hardest part about writing this book?
It’s the same with every book—the application of butt in chair. I’m a terrible procrastinator.

How many books have you written?
I’ve written 3 novellas and am writing my sixth full-length novel.

Who designed the cover of your book?
Curtis Shevlak designed my cover and I love it. I gave him some direction, including this—‘No pink. Please for the love of Barbie NO PINK. And no Welcome to Las Vegas Sign!’

There’s no sign and no pink. He went above and beyond my imaginings for the cover. If I ever meet him, I’m gonna tackle hug him.

What can your readers expect from you next?
I have 2 novellas coming out, one in April and one in July, and a full-length romantic suspense novel releasing in October. I’ve been a busy girl!

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I love social media and meeting new people. Friend me, follow me, whatever. Let’s chat!

Determined to unravel the mystery, Nichelle fights off paparazzi cameras and an unexpected rival. Chasing a killer who’s a breath from getting away with murder, Nichelle realizes too late the culprit has her number—and it might be up.

About LynDee Walker

LynDee Walker’s award-winning journalistic work has appeared in newspapers and magazines across the nation. After nearly a decade covering crime, courts, and local politics, she left full-time reporting for motherhood with a side of freelancing and fiction writing. Small Town Spin is the third in her bestselling Headlines in High Heels Mystery series. The fourth arrives January 2015.

LynDee adores her family, her readers, and enchiladas. She often works out tricky plot points while walking off the enchiladas. She lives in Richmond, Virginia, where she is either playing with her children or working on her next novel (but probably not cleaning her house).

Interview

Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I'm currently finishing up the fourth Headlines in High Heels novel, DEVIL IN THE DEADLINE, which is scheduled to launch in January 2015. I'm also making notes for another mystery series (I can hear my family's collective forehead slap from here) and still thinking about my women's fiction manuscript that's been waiting on the back burner for too long.

My goal, with every book, is to make it a better book than the last one.

Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
Every time I've had the chance to meet or hear from a reader who loves my characters. The best thing about the publishing industry is that it's the business of connecting authors with readers.

What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Don't give up. Trite, but true. The industry is a little crazy and can be disheartening at times, but if a traditional contract (large house or small press) is your goal, keep trying.

Which authors have influenced you most and how?
That list is far too long to type for fear of carpal tunnel. I think every author we read influences our writing in some way, and I'm a book nerd from way back. Can I just say "all of them?" All of them!

What’s your favorite season/weather?
SUMMER! I'm typing this in late March of the winter that wouldn't die, and I am so ready for sunshine and flip flops. I love Virginia summers: long, lazy days by the pool with the children, balmy nights, trips to the beach. Hurry up, June!

What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you’d be embarrassed to admit?
I honestly don't have an answer for this, because I don't get embarrassed by such things. It's all something someone worked hard to create, and I'm finding that the older I get, the less patience I have for things that don't hold my interest. So if I'm going to spend my time watching it or reading it rather than playing with my kids, writing, or doing laundry, I can't imagine why I'd be embarrassed to admit that.

Favorite smell?
It's a tie. Non-gushy: honeysuckle. There's a vine next to our driveway that blooms in late spring, and it's the best smell in the universe. Super-gushy: my hubby. He wears cologne sometimes, but there's just something...almost magical about how good he smells, with or without it. Though I kind of hope I'm the only one who thinks that!

What is something people would be surprised to know about you?
I'm a sappy romantic. And a total Disney nerd. Love the movies, love the parks, and love the rides.

Happiest moment in your life so far.
I am a girl blessed, so there are many. My wedding, giggling with my husband as the pastor tried to give us the wrong rings. If I didn't know it already, I got that it was forever right then. Why? Couldn't tell you. But it was a great feeling. Tied, of course, with the first time I saw each of my three babies. I know it's cliche, but I think there's a reason for that. There's nothing like setting eyes on a person for the first time, knowing you love them so much there's nothing you wouldn't do for them.

Krissy is a mother to two young children, who in turn keep her young. She live's in Dublin, Ireland but, isn't originally from South Devon in the UK. Krissy work's full time in a pharmacy and write in her spare time, whenever the urge takes me.

She has always been interested in reading from a young age, 2 years ago she was given a kindle as a present and it was the best thing that happened to her. She was able to read lots of books ever week and then she started to write reviews for all the books she read.

She then took it one step further and started her own Facebook page – Sparkling Pink Bookshelf, she intended to upload all of my reviews for the books she has read. This was purely for pleasure at that stage. She answered a post on Facebook for someone to read for reviews and thought she had died and gone to heaven. She was reading about 7/8 books a week, the kindle made this achievable. She would read at any opportunity she was able to, even staying up til the small hours to finish a book. She loved it. Then one day she was asked to beta read a book – she love's this side of it, it was so exciting. She has worked with a number of indie authors and has remained loyal to a few select authors and she beta read all their books.

After a year or more of doing this, She thought maybe she could write some of the stories that were in her head and she just decided to write and see what happened. she wrote about 70% of a story and then saw a post for the NaNoWriMo competition – to write 50,000 words in 30 days, She decided that this was a challenge she wanted to take and the Til Death Us Do Part series was born.

She is always thinking of situations that be turned into a story and have started a few stories, which in turn will be completed and released to her readers.
