Rhen: Rhen changes a great deal aboveground. Always level-headed and logical, Rhen discovers much of what Thalli has said is true. This dawning on Rhen’s part brings Thalli both great joy and significant frustration. Rhen seems to be taking the place Thalli thought was reserved for her, and that creates a fissure in their once-close relationship.

John: Always steady, faithful, and confident, John’s spirit never waivers. Physically, however, the arduous journey aboveground is difficult for him, and each of the travelers fear for his life. But John rejoices, even in suffering, especially at being able to see the earth again – sky, grass, rain, animals – all parts of life he has missed greatly in his four decades spent as a prisoner in the State.
