LOREN HALE’S POV

 

Holding Lily usually solves our problems, but she fights me this time. Ramming her tiny fists into my hard chest, trying to push me away. “Are you not hearing me?” she says, shoving my bicep. “I can’t sleep next to you.”

 

I keep her in my arms easily, my muscles flexing as I wrap them around her. “Lil, shh,” I say, my lips finding her ear.

 

“I can’t!” she shouts, tears beginning to pool.

 

“Lil, you can,” I whisper deeply. “Shh.” I lock her arms together for a minute, her body wedged between my legs. Tonight will be the most difficult, I remind myself. It’s confusing for her. She wants to be with me, but my mere presence tempts her. I don’t ever want her to believe that being alone, being apart, is the solution.

 

It’s not.

 

She needs me as much as I need her. We just have to find our footing in this relationship. And that takes time.

 

She grows restless, so I roll on top of her, pinning her legs down with mine, trapping her small frame. She seems to settle, but her chest rises and falls heavily, fear swimming in her eyes.

 

“Who do you trust more, me or you?” I ask.

 

“You.” She doesn’t even hesitate.

 

“Then this is how we’re going to sleep.”

 

She frowns. “I’m not sure I can hold your weight.”

“You should know, Olivia, I heard everything,” he murmurs, his voice low and silky.

 

Olivia glares at him, panic in her eyes.  She places the drink on the coffee table and drops to the sofa, lowering her head and covering her eyes with slender hands.  Can she be any more miserable?  Everything?  Shit!

 

Jed sets the drink on the side table, rises slowly and moves to the sofa.  He sits close and drapes an arm over the backrest behind her.  He cups her chin and forces her to look at him.  “There’s nothing to be ashamed of, Olivia,” he says softly, cocking his head to the side and smiling a knowing smile.

 

“I’m not,” she breathes, feeling that delicious pull, her belly muscles tightening.

 

“Good.  So have you ever had an orgasm?”

 

Olivia blinks.  Jeez.  She can’t believe he’s asking–mentioning–saying it out loud.  She wants to be offended by the extremely inappropriate question, but she can’t muster the emotion.  Her brain has left the building.

 

“Well?” he persists.

 

“No,” she mumbles miserably.

 

His eyes soften and he frees her chin.  “What about when you’re alone, Olivia?” he asks seductively, nuzzling his nose in her neck.

 

Jeez.  Can she be more embarrassed?  How can he sit there and calmly talk about orgasms?

 

Jed rises slowly and moves back to the chair.  He sits, picks up the drink, crosses a leg over a knee and rhythmically runs an index finger back and forth over his lower lip, his eyes locked on her.  Although seemingly cool on the outside, his insides are churning.  Pure lust rages within him–combustible, overwhelming desire.  Fuck.  He has never felt like this before and he knows he’s playing with fire.

 

Olivia peeks up at him, her green eyes guarded.  She will not admit to him that she has never had an orgasm.  Jeez.  She gulps the rest of the drink and waits for the fire to spread through her.  “I bet you can change that,” she says bravely, smiling a shy crooked smile.

 

Jed spits a mouthful of cognac back into the glass and his eyes widen.  “You don’t know what you’re saying, Olivia,” he warns harshly, his eyes black and impassive.

 

Olivia arches a brow–questioning him–daring him.

 

“You don’t know me, Olivia,” he smirks, continuing to rub a finger over his lower lip, his brows furrowing.

 

“You don’t want me?” she squeaks, her heart in her throat.

 

Olivia’s sweet innocence tugs at his heart and he nervously rakes a hand through his hair.  He wants her bad.  “I want you, Olivia.  But I can’t promise you anything,” he sighs.

 

“Can you promise me an orgasm?” she baits, her voice quivering and she can’t believe the words came out of her mouth.

I couldn’t help but inspect the fortifications as we drew near. The trench was deep, and the wall was tall and sturdy. Guards peered at us from the towers. The heavy gates were closed, but when Micah spoke to the guards, one gate slid back enough to let us enter two at a time.

Zeke looked around. “Why?” he asked. But before I could form an     answer, he let out a breath. “Oh, no.”

I looked around, too, in time to see the beautiful Eve coming toward us. Her eyes were bright and intent on Zeke. When she saw he had noticed her, she skipped a step, started to run, and flung herself into his arms.

The entire traveling party stopped to see what was happening. Mother   looked confused.

Micah barely gave them a glance before he urged Mother on, bending to say something into her ear. There were some catcalls from the other boys, and Kenai was among the ones making them. Gideon watched the display with surprised interest, and his eyebrow rose when his gaze flicked to mine.

I turned back to Zeke. He was surprised, hopefully reluctant, but his    arms came around her for a moment before he set her down.

“Enjoy your reunion,” I said under my breath and moved away from them. I stepped between Ethanim and Lib. “Please keep moving,” I begged quietly, and they did, escorting me quickly away from the embarrassing scene behind me.

At the evening meal, Zeke joined me while I was passing around food.

“Did you kiss her?” I asked.

He laughed. He had always been able to see through me. “If I did?”

“You could use the practice.”

Reb spit water from his nose, and Noah choked on his first bite of food.  Joshua had to pound on his back. I smiled smugly up at Zeke.

“You know that was nothing,” he said as we moved on.

“No I don’t.” I wasn’t ready to let him off the hook yet.

“Yes, you do. Ket, I told you before—”

“You embarrassed me in front of everyone!”

He leaned close to my ear. “How does it feel?”
