Synopsis

Jeremiah Milk lived a life filled with emotional extremes. Amniotic band syndrome—a congenital condition—left his fingers and toes malformed. Ridiculed as a child, he became an adolescent hermit. As an adult, Jeremiah’s wounds healed when he landed a position as a park ranger and married a woman who loved him despite his physical appearance. But fate ripped his life to shreds when his wife and infant son died on the same night in separate calamities. Shortly thereafter, the tides turned once more as an act of Jeremiah’s ostensible benevolence translates into a financial boon. The book on Jeremiah’s life closes without mercy when he’s found murdered at Tripping Falls State Park.

Damon Lassard—Hollydale’s loveable civic leader, amateur sleuth, and Jeremiah’s neighbor—springs into action. He’s obstructed by a prickly lieutenant, but wriggles information unknown to the police from a colorful bevy of suspects. Aided by his best friend Rebecca and his reluctant ally Detective Gerry Sloman, Damon engineers a deep dive into Jeremiah’s past to solve the crime. Along the way, Damon strengthens his relationship with the breathtaking Bethany Krims, cracks a local horticultural mystery, and tries in vain to tame his wickedly sarcastic mother.

Interview:

How long have you been writing?

I’ve been writing for almost three years.  I had started and stopped a few times before then, but in 2011 I promised myself that I wouldn’t stop writing until I had at least one book published.  Of course, when that happened, I enjoyed writing so much that I don’t want to stop.

What makes you like to write?

Writing provides me with not only a creative outlet, but also a means to express my passion with the world at large.

Who is your favorite author and why?

Ken Follett.  Between the depth of his historical research and amazing talent he has for character development, I find that I can’t put anything by him down.  I’ve been reading Ken Follett’s books since I was a teenager and I’ve loved everything he’s ever written.

What are your favorite things to do besides writing?

With a full time job and a young daughter, writing takes up the vast majority of my free time. But I’ve played soccer my entire life so I try to sneak in a game every now and again.  And I enjoy cooking as well (though my enjoyment doesn’t always translate to the enjoyment of those doing the eating).

Do you believe in horoscopes?

I’ve honestly never really thought about it.  After spending a solid three minutes contemplating it, I’d have to say no.  Recently, however, a friend directed me to a tarot reader who has an online site.  I went through a basic introductory session – something called the Celtic Cross where you pull eight cards from the deck.  The very first card I pulled was the Devil; the fourth was Death.  I’m going to go ahead and interpret that as meaning my books have devilishly good plots and because I write murder mysteries the death card makes total sense.  And I’m never doing Tarot cards again….

What is your favorite scene to write?

My favorite part of a book to write is not a scene, but rather dialogue.  When I started writing I found it was one of the hardest things to write and now I find that dialogue flows from my mind to my fingertips.  Plus, as my friend and fellow mystery writer Alan Orloff likes to say: I’m a writer -- the voices in my head are supposed to be there.

How long did it take you to write Don't Cry Over Killed Milk?

It took me the better part of a year to write.  I had started the plotting while finishing the first book in my Damon Lassard series, “It Takes Two to Strangle.”  The plot is fairly complex (though I promise it’s an easy read) so it took a while to get everything just write (err, right).

What are you currently working on?

I’m working on the third book in the Damon Lassard Dabbling Detective series.  It’s set on a Caribbean cruise ship and is going to have a number of interesting and engaging sub-mysteries embedded
within the primary storyline.  I’ve been on quite a number of cruises and on the most recent one, I spent hours on a behind-the-scenes tour where I was able to see the bridge, all sorts of crew-only areas, and grill crew members on esoteric questions that I’m weaving into the story.  I hope to have it ready for publication in the Fall of 2014.

Who designed the cover of Don't Cry Over Killed Milk?

A wonderful artist named Kari Klawiter!

What was the hardest scene for you to edit out?

In my first book, I had to edit out a few scenes delving into the background of my protagonist’s close friend and police detective, Gerry Sloman.  The scenes related to Gerry’s conversion of his religious practice.  I thought the back story I developed was interesting, but it didn’t mesh with the lighthearted nature of the book and hurt the overall flow.

What is the best book that you've read recently?

“Hit Me” by Lawrence Block.  It’s the latest in his “Keller, the Hit Man,” series.  If you haven’t read any of Lawrence Block’s works, you should.  Right away.  His “Keller” character isn’t some hard-nosed, cold-blooded hit man.  He’s a very likeable person who has a heart and a conscience.  And the Keller books (like the books in Block’s Matthew Scudder and Bernie Rhodenbarr series) are downright funny – Block has the best dry humor and sense of wit I’ve ever read.

When she meets AJ at her favorite coffee shop, she can't help but feel an immediate attraction to him. At the same time, she knows there's more to his story than what he's letting on. And then there's the handsome Doctor Regan, who she feels a connection with, but is she trying to make it more than is really there in order to spare her the heartbreak of being with AJ?

Only adding to her problems is the new resident, Dr. Jeffries, who seems out to get her from day one, and a murder case she can't help solve without revealing her own secrets.

Can Nardia uncover the secrets of her own past while still moving forward and saving those in need of her help in the present?

Excerpt

I touched the door. His strides were erratic as he moved toward me, and with one quick turn of the lock, he pulled me inside, sliding his lips onto mine. I met his lips with the same ferocious impact, parting my mouth, tangling his tongue with mine, and sending spikes of fire up my spine. AJ’s hand went behind me, pulling the cord of the blinds closed. This desire was intense. I felt the softness of the corner chaise lounge against my back. I ripped off his shirt, trailing my hands up and down his back. I could feel how hard he was against my leg. My own shirt hugged his on the ground. Undoing his pants, I thought how they would complement the already growing pile. Before I could throw his pants, my own pair joined the pile. We only had our underwear on when AJ pulled back and lightly kissed my neck, slowly stroking my thigh.

PODs
Release Date: 06/24/13
Publisher: Spencer Hill Press
Paperback/ebook
312 pages

Summary from Goodreads:
Seventeen-year-old Eva is a chosen one. Chosen to live, while others meet a swift and painful death from an incurable virus so lethal, a person is dead within days of symptoms emerging. In the POD system, a series of underground habitats built by the government, she waits with the other chosen for the deadly virus to claim those above. Separated from family and friends, it's in the PODs she meets David. And while true love might not conquer all, it's a balm for the broken soul.

After a year, scientists believe the population has died, and without living hosts, so has the virus. That's the theory, anyway. But when the PODs are opened, survivors find the surface holds a vicious secret. The virus mutated, infecting those left top-side and creating... monsters.

Eva and David hide from the infected in the abandoned PODs. Together they try to build a life--a new beginning. But the infected follow and are relentless in their attacks. Leaving Eva and David to fight for survival, and pray for a cure.

Excerpt One:

He flinched at the sound of my voice, snapping his laptop shut. Looking over his shoulder, he smiled. “You look beautiful in the morning, Eva. Your blonde hair messy and falling around your face, your eyes— not quite blue, but not quite green— sparkling in the morning sun… or the simulation of the sun,” he said with a crooked grin.

“Stop joking around. What were you just looking at?” I’d seen the picture on his laptop before he’d shut it. People running around their POD, a look of terror in their eyes. I reached out and opened the lid of his computer. My arm brushed against his, sending goosebumps racing across my skin. I had to concentrate to remember what I was asking about. The screen was nothing but static. “They cut off another one? Who?” I let go of his computer and started to pull my hand away. He grabbed it, folding it into his own, threading our fingers together. He grazed his lips over my knuckles.

Oh. Wow. Do that again.

My insides swirled out of place and did things I’d only read about in my mother’s racy romance novels.

“Yes. Someone I know from class. You don’t know him. And who says I’m joking?”

“What?” He was difficult to understand on a good day, but that early in the morning, seeing him in nothing more than blue pajama bottoms, his lips moving against my fingers as he talked, it was nearly impossible.

“You told me to stop joking around. I wasn’t joking.”

My heart was beating so hard and fast in my chest, I was sure he could hear it. I pinched the bridge of my nose between my fingers. My fingernails bit into my flesh.

Say something, Eva! Do Something— anything. Just… something. “So…” I started, only to be interrupted by my yawn. Except yawn, idiot! Kiss him… wait… what?

“What’s your theory on the PODs being cut off? Do you think there’s that many people testing positive for the—”

He stood, turned toward me, cupped his hand around the back of my neck and pulled my lips to his. That shut me up. Shock slammed into me, quickly giving way to pleasure, and pleasure to urgency.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, threading my fingers through his silky hair. David’s hand moved from the back of my neck to cup my cheek, his thumb caressing my skin. The other one moved to the small of my back, pulling me tighter against him. He kissed me long, deep. It was sinfully erotic feeling his bare skin under my fingers.

When he tore his lips away, he looked in my eyes. My first instinct was to turn away, but both his hands cupped my cheeks. He bent his head and grazed his lips over mine before looking at me again.

“I’ve wanted to do that since the first day I saw you. And each day I’ve known you it’s been harder and harder not to.”

“Well, what took you so long?”

Praise for the Amazon Bestselling PODs:

"5 Stars! I loved this book. I have been kind of bogged down with dystopias lately, but this was amazing. It was so cool to see life before the 'event', to see Eva wrestle with her choices and then, to watch her change as she lived inside the PODs...Yes, there are zombies. Yes, there's a little romance. But I think, at its heart, PODs is a coming of age story about Eva and how she grows from a girl into a strong, decisive woman during this period of absolute destruction. And Pickett writes it beautifully." ~ Sherry Ficklin, author of "Extracted"

"I was blown away by this debut novel from Michelle Pickett! Rather than feeling like I was reading a book, I actually sometimes felt like I was actually watching the characters' lives progress; it was kind of weird! The emotions that Eva felt were so raw and real, and I think Michelle really captured the emotions that one would be feeling in a post-apocalyptic world...PODs may very well be one of the next big things in YA, so I am very happy to have been one of the ones that was part of the beginning of it all! Congrats Michelle on your YA debut and I am looking forward to more by you!  I gave PODs a well-deserved 5/5 stars!  " ~Phil book reviewer at Stack of Hardbacks

“5 glowing, sparkling stars for this one!...I absolutely adored every character Michelle introduces us to. This book isn't just about a romance, or two people fighting some battle. This book allows us to get to know several, amazing, diverse characters who all grab your heart (even a few who have attitude issues). They all held such an important place in the story… Now for the plot. Holy crap!... Michelle did a flippin' fantastic job giving us each piece of this puzzle… I won't go into details about what happens after they are removed from the POD but O-M-G! The action never stops…This book seriously needs to be a movie. I could picture every detail and already see it playing out on screen. PLEASE SOMEONE MAKE THIS HAPPEN!”  ~Jessica of Total Bookaholic

About the Author:
I'm a wife, mother, author, reader, although not always in that order.  I write young adult urban fantasies, science/fiction and paranormal romances and have recently started dabbling in young adult contemporary romance. Reading was one of my earliest passions, writing soon followed. I began writing seriously during college where I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a degree in accounting. Why I chose a career that frowns on creativity remains a mystery.
I’m addicted to Reese’s peanut butter cups and eat way too many while I write, have an abnormal obsession with hoodies and can’t write without one, and I hate to cook, but love to watch cooking shows on television. An unabashed romantic, I love a swoon-worthy ending that will give me butterflies for days.
I wrote my debut young adult novel, PODs, in 2011. PODs, a science/fiction, post-apocalyptic romance, will be released June 4, 2013 through the amazing Spencer Hill Press.  My second young adult title, Milayna, a paranormal romance, will release through Spencer Hill Press beginning in March 2014. Milayna is a standalone, with series potential. It’s meant to be a trilogy. The Infected, a PODs novel, will release November 2014. It is the second, and last, book in the PODs series.
I was born and raised in Flint, Michigan.  I now reside in a small community outside Houston, Texas with my incredibly supportive, not to mention gorgeous, husband, three amazing school-aged children, a 125-pound lap dog, and a snooty cat.

Synopsis

New York Times & USA Today Bestselling Author!
Breaching the Billionaire: Alethea's Redemption (Book 6 of the Legacy Collection)
Release Date: 13.01.2014

Alethea is at a crossroad. For as long as she could remember, it was her and her best friend, Lil, against the world. Now that Lil has met Prince "I have my own helicopter" Charming and reconnected with her family, Alethea is on the outside looking in, justifying who she's always been to people who have never understood her. When she uncovers a looming threat to Lil's family, she's determined to save them, even after they tell her not to get involved and assign their best man to stop her.

Marc Stone has been watching Alethea ever since she waltzed through his security system and right into his late night fantasies. As a decorated Marine, he's seen war, but nothing could prepare him for this wild redhead. Strong. Beautiful. Flawed, and fiercely protective. Hard to love, and impossible to deny.

If she'll stop fighting him long enough, he'll show her just how perfect they are for each other. That is, if she doesn't get them both killed first.

Tame Excerpt:

There wasn’t a day that went by that Marc wasn’t grateful for the faith Dominic had shown him, and his loyalty had never wavered. He’d found his confidence again and enjoyed a lifestyle most envied. Money bred money. Although he wasn’t in the same financial league as his boss, he was wealthy beyond what he’d ever expected. He would have said that nothing was more important than his job.
Until now.
With a sigh, Marc looked back at Alethea. He should have squeezed out every bit of information he could while she was vulnerable. It would have been easy enough to manipulate her and she likely wouldn’t have even remembered it the next day.
But he couldn’t.
Not even for Dominic.
Beneath her tough talk and confident smile, Alethea was hurting, and he couldn’t ignore that any more than he could have left his men behind on the battlefield. In the past, they may have been adversaries, but they were more alike than different when it came to what he considered most important.
He wanted her.
Needed her.
Would find a way to have her.
He’d dated many women—even come close to loving a couple of them before things fell apart for one reason or another. But none had ever gotten under his skin the way Alethea had. None sent his blood pounding at the mere thought of touching her.
But it was more than that.
He respected her.
Wanted to hold her to him and comfort her.
Or shake some sense into her.
The temptation to crawl into bed beside her, hold her in his arms, and kiss away the pain he’d seen in her eyes was strong, but, however much he wanted to protect her, it was his job to outsmart her. He hoped to God she had nothing to do with the trouble at Corisi Enterprises.
Tomorrow. He’d figure out what to do tomorrow. For now, all he could do was watch over her.
A few hours later, she stirred in her sleep and moaned. Her eyes flew open and she asked into the darkness, “Marc?”
He fought and won against the urge to go to her. Instead he answered quietly, “Yes?”
“What are you still doing here?” she asked, sounding surprised and confused.
“Making sure you’re okay.”
She laid her head back on her pillow and closed her eyes, falling back asleep even as she spoke, “I told you I don’t need you.”
I know, he thought. But you’re wrong.

“My heart was bursting at the seams, longing to feel again. My skin was crawling with anticipation for the next fix of sensation that traveled from my fingers to my toes to my core. Was it my time or was it too late as I had convinced myself of so long ago? He made me feel again, but I hadn’t decided if I loved or hated him for it. It took only one moment to destroy the walls that years of pain and disappointment had built. To destroy me. To make me want more.  Only I didn’t know if I deserved more…. I had always been ruled by my emotions, which had contributed to the extreme highs and lows in my life, but to feel numb was a curse that I had been living with for too many years that I would now fight against for life. Fight for the feelings that once inspired my soul and warmed my heart because I saw him and a shock of life brought me to my knees and begged for more, shamelessly. Lena soon learns that there is more to this stranger than his hard exterior. He has a dark history and an agenda that somehow involves her, but behind all the muscle beats a tender heart. As she begins to face her own terrible past, she finds him to be an unlikely ally, evoking everything she has buried deep inside, including her passion.

Strictly Adults only. Contains graphic language and violence, explicit sexual scenes including BDSM elements and anal play,

An excerpt from Master

He had almost brought himself to climax when he froze. The noise was barely audible but his hearing missed nothing. Angry and frustrated, he turned off the shower and reached for his towel, getting it around his waist just as Lena timidly entered the bathroom.

“What are the fuck are you doing, Lena?”

Any hope that his fury would scare her off was quickly dismissed. She remained unmoved and looked back at him intently. “I don’t want to be alone anymore.”

“And I want five minutes of peace. Now get back to bed.”

She shook her head and her voice was strained. “You said that you would deal with me… that you would punish me for disobeying you and now you’re not, and I don’t know what that means.”

“It means that I’m fucking tired, and don’t want to put up with your shit, but fine, if you want to be punished, then go wait for me, bent over the couch. I’ll be there with my belt in a minute and make sure you’re fully satiated.”

“Lena’s lip trembled. “Do you want me to remove my underwear?”

As much as he could see how afraid she was, he could also see her determination and need. She was ready to subject herself to anything he could dish out, and not out of any weakness, but out of the trust she had for him. His anger didn’t stand a chance against this and it was time to change tactics.

“Lena, please, go back to bed. You’ve had a terrible day and your emotions are confused. You need sleep and all this will be forgotten tomorrow.”

“Sometimes I wish I could forget, but I can’t. I don’t know what’s wrong with me. All I know is that you keep your word. That’s as stable as it’s ever been for me. Please don’t take that away from me.”
Her sincerity was slowly eating away at him. Jahn stared at her, still hoping that he could end this without tears and grief.

“Lena, you don’t know what kind of man I am. All you have seen is a side of me that knows how to care for another human being. That is the least side of who I am.”

“I’ve also seen the side that can kill a man,” she replied. “That must mean the rest of you is somewhere between, and that’s enough for me.”

Jahn shook his head. “I can’t give you what you want.”

“And what is that? A life of commitment, a happy ending like those in fairy tales?” Her sorrowful smile widened thoughtfully. “I already know that there are no happy endings, there are only moments. In the end, we all die. I have a lifetime of horrible memories that plague me. Is it so wrong to want ones that I can remember with happiness?”

“Inflicting punishment on you would not be a happy memory.”

She looked up at him. “It would be for you. Isn’t that what you enjoy?”

Jahn sighed and shook his head. “Somehow the thought of hurting you doesn’t bring me any satisfaction.”

Her face fell. “I thought… I’m sorry. I’ll go back to bed.”

Jahn frowned in confusion, but as she started to leave, it suddenly dawned on him how she had interpreted his words.

“Lena, wait. I didn’t mean…

She had given him the way out. If she thought that he was not attracted to her, even in his perverted sexual desires, all this would be over. Lena would shed a few tears and then they could co-exist without the complications. The plan would be back on track.

She was waiting silently, not looking at him. All he had to do was tell her that he didn’t want her, even if it was a lie, but as he looked at her, so small and vulnerable, the plan didn’t seem so important.

“Take off your dress.”

His quiet demand made Lena tremble, but her fingers gathered each side and the dress was drawn from her body, leaving her in just her underwear.

“Everything. Take it off.”

Without hesitation, she removed her bra and panties, and instinctively she crossed her arms over her breasts.

The severity entered his tone. “Don’t cover yourself.”

Her arms fell away and his eyes moved over her body, studying the large breasts pert with youth, the fullness of her hips and rounded belly. What he wasn’t expecting to see was the plump naked mound at the apex of her thighs, with a few stray hairs still present. He nearly laughed until the significance of what she had done dawned on him. She had shaved to please him, to give him what he desired. It was a gift that both disturbed and excited him.

Taking her hand, he pulled her towards him and looked down at her. She was like a frightened animal, shivering and uncertain. He had never seen anything more beautiful and the adrenaline pumped through his veins.

Turning away, he adjusted the taps of the shower until the water was running warm, before guiding her under it, with her facing the wall. Grasping her wrists, he brought her arms up high and wide, placing her palms on the tiles.

The warm water eased her shivering, but her legs were shaking. Lena gasped as strong arms went around her and his body pressed against her. The towel was gone and she could feel his cock brushing against her lower back. His foot pushed at her feet, widening her stance, and making her aware of how much her vagina was exposed to him. Her hips were grasped and her body pulled back, so that her bottom was thrust out.

His mouth moved closed to her ear. “You don’t move. You don’t turn around. You face the wall and obey me. Is that understood?”

“Yes.”

He moved away from her, and for a moment that seemed to last forever, there was only the sound of the water flowing over her body, trickling between her buttocks and tormenting her clit. Any second she expected to feel his hand between her legs, and she braced for the sensation it would bring.

Instead it was her buttocks that received the first attention. Lena gasped and her eyes widened as she quickly realized what he was doing. Jahn was crouched behind her and his palms were splayed across her cheeks, gently spreading them apart. His close proximity was easily judged by his breath on her most intimate parts.

Her legs shook harder as she was subjected to his examination. She could almost feel his eyes boring into her. Slowly, he allowed her cheeks to fall back in place, but his hands remained where they were, softly caressing and squeezing as if testing their firmness.

With her mind clouding over, she was barely aware that he had stood up again, until his lips brushed against the base of her neck and over her shoulder. Any doubt of his attraction to her was put to rest as she felt his unyielding cock push into her spine. His hands were gliding up her sides until they were cupping her breasts. Her nipples were captured between his thumb and forefinger, where he pinched and tugged at them, encouraging them to swell.

In all her life, Lena had never felt her body react so violently. Her stomach was tightening with the contractions in her vagina. Her veins seemed to be electrified and her heart was hammering at her chest. She felt weak, with her legs threatening to give way at any moment.

His harsh whisper resonated in her ear. “Why do you give me so much grief, Lena? Why do you make me want to punish you?”

As if to reinforce his words, his fingers crushed her nipples, making her cry out. His body was pushing in closer to her and Lena was aware that his breathing was faster. Absently, she moved a hand down to his, hoping her touch would distract him. Instead her hand was seized in his and brought back up to the other. Grasping both wrists, he held her still.

“You’re disobeying me, again.”

Keeping her pinned, he moved away to her side, only to bring his hand slamming into her buttock. A second later, her other cheek received the same. Lena yelled with the pain and was startled to hear his huffed laugh of amusement. Fear began to edge into her arousal.

For a moment he rubbed and squeezed her bottom gently, but then rapidly delivered three violent smacks to each cheek. Her whimpers soon turned into sobbing as the burning pain swelled in her bottom. She struggled to free herself from him only to be pushed back against the wall.

“This is what happens to naughty girls.” His voice was harsh as he moved back behind her, seizing her breasts and pulling her back against him. She had little choice but to grip his iron knuckles as he crushed her against the tiles, under his weight. His legs were on the outside of hers, pushing them back together to complete her entrapment. Releasing one breast, his hand moved down and he forced his cock to rub against her sore buttocks, pushing and trying to divide her clenched cheeks.

“Please don’t,” Lena sobbed.

“This is what you wanted.” He continued to rub and push. “To be punished and hurt.”

“Not like this. I don’t want this.” She was crying loudly. “Don’t hurt me. Please, don’t hurt me.”

Whether it was her desperate plea, or the water suddenly turning icy cold, Jahn suddenly released her and backed away. Lena remained against the wall, her body shaking with misery.

“I’m sorry,” she gasped. “I’m so sorry.”

He turned the water off and grabbed a towel, wrapping it around her. Rubbing her shoulder, he waited until she had calmed before gently turning her to face him.

“Go back to the apartment and get another towel and get yourself dried.”

She couldn’t look at him. “What about you?”

He sighed. “I need to cool off anyway. Just do as I’ve said, and then go back to bed.”

“Forgive me,” she whispered.

Jahn sighed deeply. “You’re not the one who needs to be forgiven.” He softly pushed her towards the curtain. “Go.”

He watched her until she had entered the apartment, and then he leant back against the wall, feeling his wet skin cool and prickle in the cold air. Turning on the cold water, he stood under the flow, trying to distinguish the heat that still ran through him.

What the fuck was wrong with him? Lena wasn’t the first woman he had lusted over, but it was more than that. He wanted her beyond a point where he was no longer in control. He had been fully prepared to rape her, and it sickened him. Maybe, finally, the years of sex and violence had taken their toll and unleashed the real animal in him.

If losing control wasn’t bad enough, his mind was chaotic with emotions that he had never had to contend with, shame and remorse.

“Fuck you, Natasha,” he called out. “This bastard does not fall in love.”

Whatever had gone wrong there would have to be damage control, or Lena would be an emotional wreck of his own making. He would have to reassure her that she had done nothing wrong, maybe even cuddle her if she still wanted to go near him. A little compassion, a little romance and all this could be put behind them. Anything else she read into it would not be his problem.

Lena did excite him, her and that beautiful arse that coloured so well, but no woman would ever take precedence in his life. He needed to be back in control, and even to examine these revelations of his nature. He didn’t need to hurt her physically to do that. The ultimate test of cruelty would be allowing her to fall in love with him.
