DINNER WITH THE PARENTS

He chuckled. The sound had the ability to tease my senses and make my stomach lurch. “Finally. I want to erase memories of every guy you've ever snuck in there with.”

I giggled. Not because it wasn’t true. I had made out with guys in that closet. The thought that I still had memories of the guys was comical. The kisses before Echo’s were child’s play. Insignificant. Not worth mentioning or remembering.

I pulled open the door and startled a couple making out. They sprang apart, the girl growing red-faced while the guy looked pissed. He shot us a get-lost look.

“Do you mind?” I said, when they didn’t move.

“We were here first,” the guy snapped.

“Watch it with that tone, dimwit,” Echo warned. Not that they heard him.

“You had your turn,” I said. “I want to use it now.”

The guy gave me a once over and smirked. “Flying solo, Jemison. I have a buddy who wouldn’t mind a quickie in here with—”

The next second, Echo grabbed his shirt, lifted him off the ground, and sent him sailing across the hallway. He hit the opposite wall with a thud.

His girlfriend’s jaw dropped.

“You bitch!” She, of course, assumed I’d done this to her man. She reached forward to push me out of the way, but her hand never touched me. Echo nudged her in the direction of the boyfriend. Maybe he forgot his strength because a nudge from him was like a push. The girl staggered forward, almost tripping over her boyfriend, who was peeling himself from the floor.

Shifting to hyper speed, Echo pulled out a runic blade, rushed to their side and etched forgetful runes on their arms. The next second, we were inside the closet, the door closed. “At last.”

I sighed. “You really should stop being rough with people who are mean to me.”

He gave me a lost puppy look. “Sorry. I’ll try.”

“Liar.”

“You know the rules. No one hurts you without dealing with me. Besides, I always make them forget,” he whispered in a voice gone smoky, his fingers sliding through my hair. He angled his head. “You insisted and I always do as you wish.”

“Hey.” I tried to evade his lips even though I wanted to kiss him so badly. “I didn’t bring you in here to make out.”

“Too bad.” His lips closed around mine and time stood still. Feelings took over. Thoughts of school disappeared. He became the focus of all my senses. My existence. Breathing was impossible, but who needed air at a time like this. I wrapped my arms around his neck and enjoyed the ride, my ears ringing, chest hurting from lack of air and my body on fire.

He eased off the kiss and ran his lips along my jaw to my ear. “Good morning, Cora-mio.”

Too disoriented to respond, I let my head rest on his shoulder and sighed.

“You have thirty seconds before the second bell,” he warned. “But the entire class will know you’ve been thoroughly kissed.”

Class? Second bell? What was he talking about? I opened my eyes and looked around. Then I realized where we were and remembered why I’d dragged him in here in the first place.

I leaned back and studied his beautiful face. Reaching up, I stroked his cheek. “Are you okay?”

He chuckled. “I am now. That kiss will keep me going until tonight.” A naughty gleam entered his eyes. “Or, if you don’t mind missing the class, we can finish this at my place.”

One lost love.
One lost best friend.
One hot soul reaper.

Straight out of the psyche ward, Cora just wants her life to be normal. She doesn’t want to see souls or the reapers collecting them. The love of her life, the guy she’s loved from a distance for years, has moved away without saying goodbye. So yes, she’s nursing a serious heartbreak. It’s no wonder love is the last thing on her mind when Echo storms into her life.

The chemistry between them is mind-blowing. The connection defies logic. It doesn’t help that Echo is the poster boy for everything she hates in a guy—hot, beautiful, and cocky. A general pain-in-the-butt. Being around him makes her feel more alive than she’s ever felt before. But more important, the souls leave her alone when he is around.

Echo is perfect for her. Echo might even be her soul-mate. There is only one problem. Echo is a freaking soul reaper. A Grimnir. The very beings she wants out of her life. Maybe normal is overrated because Cora wants it all. Answers. Love. A life. You see, once you fall for a Grimnir, your life will never be the same again.

INTERVIEW WITH CORA

Kelly: Why were you given the name Cora?

Cora: My grandmother was Coraline. I’m named after her.

Kelly: What, if anything, does your zodiac sign mean to you?

Cora: My birthday is December 5th. I am Sagittarius, the Archer. Sagittarians have lively personality and are optimists. I am a typical Sagittarian. I’m direct, forthright, and I say what I think.

Kelly: How much pride do you take in your appearance?

Cora: *laughs*: A lot. I don’t care what anyone says, people are drawn by the visuals and I take care of my appearance. My hair is always nicely styled. I love to shop and dress nice. I don’t mind waking up thirty minutes early, so when I step out the door, I look my best. Echo might not admit it but he was first attracted to all this. *waves her hand to indicate her face*

Kelly: Are you also attracted to guys because of their appearance?

Cora: *laughs*: At first, but what holds my interest is their personality.

Kelly: Where do you currently live (town, neighborhood, locale)? Do you like it?

Cora: Kayville, Oregon Wine Country. I’m okay with it. Before I met Echo, I couldn’t wait to finish high school and leave. Now, it’s not so bad. When with him, other cities, countries, even realms is just a portal away

Kelly: Who is your best friend? Describe them briefly.

Cora: *smiles*: I have two. Raine, beautiful hair, hazel eyes, freckles, tough as nails, yet the most loyal friend ever. Then there’s Echo. I never knew I could be best friends with a guy. That he’s everything I’ve ever wanted in a man only makes it perfect.

Kelly: What is your greatest talent?

Cora: *laughs*: I’m good with makeup, hair and clothes. I might one day be a stylist if this soul business doesn’t take too much of my time.

Kelly: Do you have any irrational fears/phobias?

Cora: *squints*: Not really. I live in a farm, so bugs and small animals don’t bother me.

Kelly: What is your worst habit/vice?

Cora: Curling my hair. I hate flat iron and blow driers, which means it takes forever to do my hair. But the end result is so worth it.

Kelly: What is your most cherished possession?

Cora: *lifts her hand to display a ring*: A promise ring from Echo. It belonged to his mother and his grandmother before her.

Kelly: *studies the ring*: It is gorgeous. Is the writing runic?

Cora: No, it is Druidic. The middle one has a special meaning.

Kelly: What?

Cora: *points at the three rays that converge at an apex*: This is called Awen. The three rays have different meanings. The left and right rays symbolize female and male energy. The center ray is their harmonious balance.

Kelly: *touches the three spirals*: And this one?

Cora: That’s the triskellion. It represents Druidic virtues.

Kelly: Nice. What makes you blush?

Cora: That’s easy. When my mother calls my boyfriend hot. There’s the ew factor, but at the same time, I’m reminded Mom is a woman too

Kelly: What is your relationship status at the start of the story?

Cora: Are you kidding? I’d just left the crazy house at the beginning of the story and I was in a pitiful state to have a relationship. Then Echo crossed my path and my life changed.

PickingLemons

Synopsis

Economic theories can predict many things – just not the death of a renowned Economics professor. When Professor Edmund DeBeyer is found dead in his office, strangled to death by his own Ph.D. hood, the police don’t have to look further than his colleagues in the Economics Department for suspects. After all, Edmund was the most despised member of the department. C.J. Whitmore, the department’s only tenured female, (who also has a penchant for wearing pink cowboy boots to class) resolves to get to the bottom of the mystery using economic principles. Comparing tracking down murder suspects to to selecting a used car, she attempts to discern the real deals from the “lemons.” That is, which suspects are really telling the truth and which are lying to protect their guilt. Will C.J. be able to pick the lemon before her clever adversary strikes again?

About This Author

J.T. Toman lives in Boulder, Colorado. She received her Ph.D. in economics from Yale University and has taught econometrics at the University of Sydney and the University of Colorado at Boulder. She also has a degree in zookeeping from Pikes Peak Community College and has cared for everything from butterflies to elephants. She now teaches math at Front Range Community College, and truly believes fractions are useful in everyday life.

In her spare time, J.T. Toman joins the rest of Colorado hiking, biking and skiing. However, much like her cats, she finds food more inspiring than scenery. J.T. particularly loves home- grown tomatoes, udon noodles and tall glasses of chocolate milk, but not at the same time.

Picking Lemons is her first novel.

Interview

What is your favorite genre to read/write?
Definitely murder mysteries! I think a good murder mystery is like an artichoke … you should spend a lot of time working away at the gnarly layers before you get to the heart of the matter. When I write a mystery novel, I actually start with the heart … the who did it … and add the layers on to it to create the novel. I really enjoy the intellectual challenge that writing a murder mystery presents, as well as the fun that comes in creating the characters.

I think like many people addicted to murder mysteries, I grew up reading Agatha Christie. I also love M.C. Beaton, Joanne Fluke, Janet Evanovich and Sue Grafton. There is a new series of mysteries that I am currently addicted to, an Australian series, called Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries by Kerry Greenwood (the first book in the series is titled Cocaine Blues). They are also a T.V. series available on Netflix. If you haven’t seen them and you love old fashioned murder mysteries, I can’t recommend them enough.

What is one silly fact about you?
Just one? That is limiting!

Well, in addition to having a Ph.D. in economics, I also have a degree in zookeeping. I know ... zookeeping. What was I thinking? My mother often wonders the same thing.

So not surprisingly, because of this degree, I have cared for a lot of different animals. I had an internship looking after elephants and giraffe and tapirs. And I was a wildlife rehabilitator for a while (in case you wanted to know, a squirrel is well enough to be released when you have chased it around the enclosure for an hour and not caught it!) But when I graduated, there was only one keeper job on offer within a half hour drive of where I lived with my husband. And it involved looking after spiders. Tarantulas in fact. Hundreds of them. All lined up in their Perspex cages, rubbing their fangs, waving their hairy legs, and staring out with their eight, beady eyes.

So the silly fact about me? I am arachnophobic.

Did I take the job? You bet!

What is the most rewarding thing about being a writer?
There are so many wonderful things about being a writer. Being able to work in your pajamas is a big one. Spying on the comings and goings of the neighborhood all day out my office window is another. Being able to stop work in the middle of the day and watch Law and Order while eating lunch is a huge bonus.

But if I was being serious, none of that compares to the thrill of creating something from my imagination that, hopefully, gives people joy.

Do you have a favorite comment or question from a reader?

I have to tell you, I am so excited to get any feedback from a reader. The fact that something I have written has moved someone to reach out to me at all is beyond thrilling to me.

As far as a favorite comment, I have had a few readers tell me that they felt they actually knew the professors in Picking Lemons … that the professors were the ones from their college … and that is a wonderful compliment. To know that the characters in a book feel so real to the readers that they feel they know them personally … that is what I hope every reader feels!

Where do your ideas come from?
Real life! Perhaps too much so ...

In Picking Lemons, one of characters Edmund DeBeyer is strangled with his Ph.D. hood. This idea came to me when a friend received her Ph.D. and was having a party to celebrate. She was standing before all of us, giving a very long, very boring speech, wearing her new gown and hood. As she was droning on, I looked at her and thought, “You know, I could end this agony if I just tightened your hood a bit…”

If you could sum your main character into five words, what would they be?
C.J. Whitmore just needs three words: Sassy … Smart … Self-centered

The Review Tour for
An Incurable Insanity by Simi K Rao!

Welcome...

We offer flowers in traditional welcome.
You are our honored guest...

You saw The Exotic Tour... you got a taste for the beautiful culture and the romantic attraction of our spunky young characters... now we've reviewed it and have shared the Prologue and first four chapters with you. Did you miss any of them? Read them now!

1/13 Launch - Prologue

"Her heart fluttered when she heard the sound of the key turn in the lock. She quickly adjusted her maroon silk sari with the yellow border, the one that had caught his eye, and waited eagerly for his footsteps..."

Mel's Shelves - Chapter 1, Part I and Review

"I wasn't impressed with Shaan at the beginning. We find out why he married Ruhi, which didn't paint him in the best light, either, but he shows a lot of growth and maturity as time goes on and redeemed himself to me in the end. There were some crazy, dramatic parts and also some calm, tender moments. I look forward to reading more of Ms. Rao's books in the future!"

Tressa's Wishful Endings  - Chapter 1, Part II

"Ruhi closed her eyes; she could now repeat every movement, every word by rote. He was a creature of habit…and she was bored.

What was supposed to be the most exciting time in every young woman’s life had turned out to be the worst…Well, not really. He wasn’t mean. rather he was the perfect gentleman, too perfect!..."

My Love For Reading Keeps Growing  - Chapter 2, Part I and Review

"This really is a sweet love story.  I found it very hard to put down.  I love reading about different traditions and cultures, even if it's fiction.  I love how each MC talk to themselves in their head. We always make things out to be worse than they really are in our minds, and this book made me chuckle sometimes because there is a lot of "in head" struggle, fighting, and talking.  Silly things that make you want to find out if they are every going to get the nerve up to say to each other!"

Beck Valley Books  - Chapter 2, Part II

"It goes without saying that the youngest Ahuja was by no means lacking in looks. He was unusually handsome, of good build, and above average height who liked to maintain an athletic physique with regular exercise. But despite being inundated with innumerable suitable matches, each willing to part with unbelievable amounts in dowry, he had steadfastly declined. In fact, he had even refused to pay a visit to his hometown until now. His hand finally being forced by the news of his dadaji’s terminal illness, whose final wish was to see his youngest grandson married and settled in life..."

Deal Sharing Aunt  - Chapter 2, Part III and Review

"This was a great look into the life of married couples in India. It was a nice romance story that the author really showed the readers about India and all its customs."

Colorimetry  - Chapter 3, Part I and Review

"This book is a must-read for anyone interested in Indian culture!!  It's a thousand times better than any text book on the subject and should be a required compainion. Lol. It's similar to being immersed in the culture. It's also a must-read for romance lovers and everyone looking for something unique. And exotic."

Laurie’s Throughts and Reviews  - Chapter 3, Part II

“Son? Is it okay if I call you beta?” his father-in-law asked him; he had kind eyes.

Shaan looked over to his wife (what an odd-sounding word), and she mouthed a silent, “Please.” Then she smiled, her eyelashes drifting down in shy discomposure, carrying on as though this was one of the happiest days of her life..."

Books with Bree  - Chapter 4, Part I

"He has agreed! Oh, Mama, he has agreed!

The happiness and relief was so immense that Ruhi wanted to jump up, grab her mother, and do a little dance around the room like she had done on the day she had won her first ever trophy at school..."

Vvb32 Reads  - Chapter 4, Part II and Review

"I found this to be a gentle romance read set in Los Angeles, California and India. Being that I grew up in the L.A. area, it was a treat to read about some of the sights mentioned.

Things start off rocky with plenty of back-and-forth tugging of the heart and playful banter sprinkle these pages."

Dividing by Zero  - Chapter 4, Part III and Review

"Worth reading – the storyline is both humorous and sentimental, and I cared about the characters and what would happen to them. Ruhi in particular experiences a lot of personal growth as she adapts both to a new culture and the unexpected limitations of her marriage. (I was rooting for them to work things out, but you’ll have to read the book for yourself to see if that’s what happens!)"

An Incurable InsanityAn Incurable Insanity
by Simi K Rao
Paperback, eBook, 376 pages
Published October 8, 2013 by Tate Publishing

Her heart fluttered when she heard the sound of the key turn in the lock. She quickly adjusted her maroon silk sari with the yellow border, the one that had caught his eye, and waited eagerly for his footsteps.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven... Yes, exactly seven steps before he stopped, hesitated for a few moments, then removed his shoes one by one and arranged them neatly side by side on the shoe rack.

She smiled. He had been mindful of taking his shoes off every day now. "I am not used to it, but I will if you want me to. It's probably a good thing to do anyway."

As he settled down, he would pick up the TV remote and, without looking at her, would say in his smooth baritone, "So how did you spend your day, anything interesting?"

Shaan Ahuja found himself bowing to tradition and agreeing to an arranged marriage to the beautiful Ruhi Sharma. He went through the motions but had no intention of carrying through on his vows. His last foray into matters of the heart with an American girl had left him scarred and unwilling to try again. Thoroughly disillusioned and disgruntled he wasted no time in making his intentions clear to Ruhi on their wedding night. But, he was completely unprepared for what his new wife had in mind.

Simi K. Rao was born in India and has been living in the United States for several years. The inspiration for An Incurable Insanity came from what she has seen transpire among and within the immigrant community. Some of the experiences included are her own; some have been garnered from friends and casual conversations with acquaintances...

I am a physician–and to many I may appear serious and solitary. But once people get to know me better, they often think that I am frank, down to earth, with quite a quirky sense of humor. And that is what I bring to my writing—read and you shall see.

I was born in the dead center of India, but had the privilege of spending time both in the north and south. Therefore I have been able to sample and absorb to some extent the vastly diverse cultures and languages of both these regions (the very quality that imparts tremendous richness to our country’s heritage,) —a phenomenon perhaps not seen anywhere else in the world.

After immigrating to the United States in my early twenties and spending several years in this country, whenever I travel back to my homeland now, I find that I appreciate my roots a lot more. Still there is so much to see and learn, that a lifetime won’t suffice.

About the Author
Displaying George's bio pic.jpg

George Cunningham comes from a long line of story tellers and prevaricators.  Sitting around the living room on Sunday nights, drinking Coca Cola out of the bottle, listening to his grandfather pass down stories to his sons and their families, hearing his father and uncles tell their own stories, each one trying to top the other, and learning as a kid how to take the humor and bitter-sweet tragedy of life and weave it into a good tale.

George grew up on the West Coast of Florida, where he spent many happy hours dipping his toes into the warm waters of Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.  He was a late bloomer who didn’t graduate from University of Florida until he was 29.  As a young man, he worked as a survey crew chief, a civil engineering aide, a short-order cook, a painter, a laborer, a construction inspector, a gardener and a seltzer bottle washer. After graduation he worked as an editor, a copy editor, a layout man, a columnist, a police reporter, a business reporter, and a feature writer. He served three years in the U.S. Army, including a year in Vietnam with the 173rd Airborne Brigade.

George came to California in 1969 and immediately fell in love with the state.  He worked at the South Bay Daily Breeze, City News Service, the Orange County Register, and the Long Beach Press-Telegram.

He is the former editor and publisher of The Cunningham Report, an electronic newsletter on West Coast ports that he and his wife Carmela founded in 1995 and ran for 15 years before closing operations in December 2010. They have now founded a new venture, Reader Publishing Group, which will represent and publish books by a select group of authors, including themselves.

George is a writer because he has to be.  There are new stories to tell, new ways to tell them and new people to tell them too.  He plans to write until he dies.

He has published two novels – The Big Story and Kaboom.

The Big Story, set in the early 1970s, is about a reporter who is chasing a story that the police, the mob, and his own editors want to kill. Kaboom is a darkly humorous look at the quirky community of Lawnville and the ripples that extend throughout that community following a brutal murder. Both The Big Story (link to Big Story page) and Kaboom (link to Kaboom page) are available in printed and digital form.

George and his wife Carmela are currently writing a book on the history of the Port of Long Beach. Look for it in 2015.

Interview:

How, when and why did you first start writing?
I used to do little boy novels about dogs and creeks and alligators that hid in the water when I was a little boy to make my mom laugh. I remember writing in one story about a dog tiptoeing across a back yard and mom thought that the image of a dog trying to tiptoe was hysterical. I was funny without meaning to be, but I like it. Then I gave it up to pursue more exciting goals – being a test pilot, being a spy, being a hobo riding around on freight trains. None of that actually worked out, so instead I went to college, dropped out, worked construction, went back, dropped out, spent three years in the Army, went back, finally graduated, and ended up working as a newspaper reporter when I was 29 years old. I found out I loved writing, and newspapers are a great place to hone your trade, but you are somewhat constrained by the facts. And by editors – who are necessary, but who often get their jobs because of their lack of spine.

What is the best book that you've read recently?
Wow, that’s a tough one. I read a lot of different kinds of books. Sometimes it’s the last one I read, which in this case would be Lee Child’s first Jack Reacher novel The Killing Floor. Child was greatly inspired in his craft by John C. McDonald, who wrote the Travis McGee novels, and you can see the same formula at work here. I was a huge fan of McDonalds, and it’s easy to see the parallels. Travis McGee was a single guy, lived on a houseboat, was a tough guy with a good heart. Jack Reacher is a drifter, a former military guy who just wants to live free, a tough guy with a good heart. Travis would always meet a girl, fall in love, and then at the end go his separate way. Reacher seems to be caught in the same dynamic. She wants to settle down, have kids, and be part of a community. Reacher needs to travel on. These are fantasy stories for married men, who love their wives but secretly wonder what it would be like to live free.

Who is your favorite author and why?
Elmore Leonard, John C. McDonald, Walter Mosely, Michael Connelly, Dennis Lehane – I think the thriller mystery novels are too easily dismissed as not serious literature. But I also am a fan of authors like Kurt Vonnegut, Joan Didion, Norman Mailer, and David McCullough. My favorite depends on what mood I am in. Pick one? At this point in time it may be Mr. Leonard, because he is gone, because I will miss him, and because he knew how to tell a story in a way that keeps you up late at night when you really need to go to bed.

What do you do in your free time?
I have little free time. When I do, I like to drive, to watch the road unfold before me, to see the desert turn from sand to scrub to mountain pines as I drive. I don’t listen to books on tape or mindless music on the radio. I like the sound of the tires rolling on the asphalt, the white noise of the engine straining up hills, the sun and snow and wind and hail as you proceed on your journey. That to me is bliss.

What is your favorite Quote?
“You live, you get in trouble, you die.” I don’t know who said it, but I think it sums up things quite nicely.

What is one book everyone should read?
And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. It has suspense, colorful characters, and it sustains one’s interest from beginning to end.
