I walked into his office and stood on the opposite side of his desk from him. “Nick, you know I choose you. I can’t live without you. I love you, and I can’t wait to become your wife.”
He gazed at me for a long moment, and then the corners of his mouth tipped up into a small smile. “My wife,” he repeated.
He stood up from his chair, the leather squeaking as he rose. He walked over to the door and shut it. Eric and Josh, Nick’s roommates, were around somewhere, both getting ready to move out by the end of the month, and clearly Nick wanted privacy. With me.
After he shut the door, he stalked over to me. “My wife,” he whispered again, taking me in his arms.
“Let’s not fight,” I pleaded.
“Let’s never fight again,” he murmured.
“Deal,” I said, and I pressed my lips to his. The familiar buzz zipped through my spine as his mouth took mine aggressively. I loved the way his tongue moved sensually against mine, and the slow burn in my belly made its way down as desire overtook every sensation in my body and every thought in my mind.
God, I had missed him. I had missed this intimacy, this connection with him.
His electric fingertips danced across my skin slowly, leaving a burning tingle in their wake. He found the hem of my shirt and lifted it over my head, tossing it on the floor next to us and then removing his own before his lips crashed back down over mine. He unsnapped my bra with one hand as the other hand pressed into the small of my back. The feeling of his fingertips across my skin was utter perfection. 
He was truly an expert at seduction, and he was mine.

All of my priorities changed after the Interment. My mother’s cousin, Fred, killed my family and several of my friends before almost killing me. Since then, I’ve been left with an emptiness in my heart and a constant worry about Jack’s well-being. That worry has been explained by Moira, Morgan’s friend and second in command, as the connection between Healer and Time Bender.

I must confess that this connection gives me a headache. Jack’s thoughts can invade my mind at any given time. Since he’s been unconscious, the slightest touch during his nightmares sends images of his dreams to my mind.

Now, Jack mutters my name again as his eyes move fast behind his closed eyelids. This is my cue to hold him tighter. His fraught state changes when our hands join. I brace myself for the flood of images as I press my palm against his.

We share thoughts, and I can see and feel everything that he does. The moment the connection deepens and my mind opens to accept it, I recognize the setting. This is where I last saw Fred alive…the place where a battle I can’t remember took place. Though my memories are gone, all of the emotions from the battle still ravage my heart.

In the dream, Jack runs as the rumble around him increases. He falls to the ground as it opens up beneath him, his pulse throbbing in his temple as he shields his eyes from the bright light that separates him from me. The deafening sound of the English Council’s Warriors pushes him on. He screams my name, fear threatening to paralyze his legs.

I move my free hand to rest against his chest over his heart, but the thumping of its beat doesn’t slow. Frustration leaves a new scar in my mind as I try and fail to remember what happened to me. All I know is that my ability has made me a prized possession. Fred wanted to take it from me, and he’s not the only one.

Jack’s dream transitions. His fear is replaced by joy as he finally reaches me. I’m lying at the bottom of a cliff, broken. Fred’s body is not far from mine.

I’m reeling from the fear and the anger that settle once more in my body. I can’t remember how I got to the bottom of the cliff or how Fred died. Emptiness leaves a blank space where my memories should be.

Only one thought gnaws at my brain. I’m no longer safe here in England. Worst still, I might not be safe anywhere.

“Nice shirt,” Kim said. She was my best friend, my shopping buddy. We were an unlikely story, the two of us, but that was what made it work. She glared at my shirt as she sat down next to me. “You took the tags off, didn’t you?”

Most people had their good days and bad days, their moods going from hot to cold, but not Kim. She was full speed ahead, no brakes. I had to admit, sometimes she was the only thing that kept me looking on the bright side of life.
“Speak for yourself,” I said. “You’re the boy-crazy one, not me. He is all yours. Just remember, they have cooties.”
She scoffed, but then quieted down as Mr. Brashear began the class. She propped her phone into her history book, pretending to read, and began texting whoever she was always texting. She had bazillions of friends, as far as I could tell. And though Kim even had friends at other schools and they texted back and forth non-stop, she and I had something special. I couldn’t imagine my life without her.
I kicked her leg and she grunted, dropping her phone. It clattered loudly on her desk, and I grinned an evil smile. She shot me the stink eye, threatening me under her breath.
I rolled my eyes at her, ending the episode.
I wanted to zone out in history, which was what I normally did. After all, this class was only about what had already been done, and how boring was that? I had my head down and was trying to will my headache away, but not having much luck.
“Ah, there you are,” Mr. Brashear said loudly, snapping me out of my trance. “Good of you to join us, Mr. Alexander.”
I looked up, trying to bring my vision into focus, fighting that stupid pesky headache.
“Sorry,” a voice said.
It was familiar to me.
“I don’t really know my way around the halls yet.”
My eyes focused. It was him.

On the way, they have a carriage accident and are held up by highwaymen but it isn't until they are quarantined at Rosehaven for the pox that Ginny's and Sir Anthony's love begins to bloom.

It was fortuitous that Mr. Colin Lloyd-Jones chose to lift his gaze from the pavement at the very moment a matron emerged from her carriage to recklessly step out into his path.  The London season had barely begun and Colin was already the injured party in one too many irrevocable tragedies; a collision with said matron should hardly improve his circumstances.

"I beg your pardon, Madame," he said as he thrust his walking stick in the path of his companion, a gorgeously attired young gentleman who, like Colin, was lost in the mental fog of a broken heart.  In a graceless but noble action unacknowledged by the matron, the twosome came to an ungainly halt only to be peered at through a pair of thick spectacles in a manner most rude.

"I must confess," his companion bemoaned with a minor adjustment to his faultless cravat, "I have never felt quite so much like an exhibit at the Tower Menagerie."

Colin had his own thoughts on the subject.  However, he was forced to delay his riposte so as to rescue the lady from a nasty fall as she caught her kid boot on the threshold to the milliner's shop.  Once again, she failed to greet the gesture with even so much as a "Good day."

"Bond is meant to be utterly void of the fair sex for the duration of late afternoon," Colin observed.  "A man has a right to be availed of the opportunity to stroll down the street without women cluttering up the pavement," he added a bit crossly.

"To be sure, you are quite correct, mon ami," Sir Anthony Crenshaw, agreed.  "But, pray, do not suggest we eschew Bond Street as thoroughly as we have agreed to obviate the balls and routs of the entire season.  We shall be sadly ignorant as to how to place our bets at White's.  How might we hope to know who is the loveliest debutante, or which among them shall prove most popular, as well as most likely to be first betrothed, if we are utterly unenlightened as to who is in town?"

Colin opened his mouth to reply, but his attention was abruptly born away by the sight of a young maiden's face as it appeared at the door of the carriage.  She was breathtaking, her heart-shaped face possessed of a pair of large, impossibly green eyes set off by arched brows, black as the hair that curled along her temples.

"If you have had your fill," Sir Anthony drawled, "you had best look away.  You are utterly defenseless in the face of such beauty."

As much as the accusation stung, Colin knew it to be just.  Quickly, he averted his eyes; there was no point in avoiding the Marriage Mart with all of its balls and soirees if he were to fall head over heels in love with the first new young lady to town since he broke off his engagement with one Miss Cecily Ponsonby.
