Blog Tour {Excerpt} Much Ado About Mother by Celia Bonaduce

Much Ado About Mother
Series- Venice Beach Romance (Can be read out of order)
By- Celia Bonaduce
Genre- Contemporary Romance
Publication Date- May 29th, 2014
Published By- eKensington

Look out, Venice Beach--the Wolf women are all together again. But when 70-year-old Virginia arrives with her teacup Chihuahua and unshakeable confidence, she senses trouble. Erinn is keeping secrets--like being broke and out of work--and Suzanna is paying too much attention to the wrong man--a Latino dance instructor who nearly broke her heart once before. Virginia's ready for the third act of her life, and she intends to make it rousing and romantic. Now she just has to convince her daughters to throw out their old scripts. If life has taught Virginia anything, it's this: there's more than one way to a "happily ever after"...

And here an excerpt from 'Much Ado About Mother'

Virginia could feel her cheeks flush as she walked Piquant through Los Angeles International Airport. He was wearing his bright blue “Emotional Support Service Dog” vest and in Virginia’s opinion, he was not carrying it off at all. His little Chihuahua-shake just added to his lack of panache. She felt ridiculous and looked around, worried that her fellow travelers would be scowling or scoffing, but this was Los Angeles, a city that prided itself on not gawking at celebrities and taking all oddities in its collective stride. Piquant sailed through the airport without a sideways glance in his blazingly blue direction.

She insisted that Suzanna, her younger daughter, meet her at the curb. Virginia was determined to establish the tone of independence. She planned on making a big show of effortlessly (a) escorting Piquant, (b) balancing his carrier and (c) getting her own luggage off the carousel, all with the casual effortless for which this city was known. The fact that she was currently only accomplishing (a) and (b) was leaving her a little anxious, since she had two very large – and overweight – bags with which to contend at baggage claim. Looking up at the monitor to see which carousel would be depositing her luggage, she failed to notice two little hands tugging at Piquant’s ears.

“Doggy!” said the little girl as she happily twisted the Chihuahua’s ears.

God, these Los Angeles mothers! What is wrong with parents these days?

“Sweetie, you wouldn’t like it if someone were grabbing your ears, would you? Now let go of Piquant’s ears.”

The insufferably reasonable tone of the new-age mother annoyed Virginia.

Just tell the kid to stop! Wait! How does this woman know my dog’s name?

As the mother bent down and tried to stop her child from molesting Piquant, she collided with Virginia’s forehead as Virginia bent to rescue her dog. After clunking heads, they looked at each other and Virginia realized she was looking into her daughter’s eyes.

Britt Anderson went along with everything the doctors said for nearly four years, but she was still dying at eighteen. The cancer had won leaving her without a future, without any options, and without control. No control, except for how she would leave this world. As Britt tries to end her life by going into the frigid waters she realizes her mistake. She struggles to get back to shore, to cry out for help, but her atrophied muscles are useless and the frigid water steals the breath from her chemo-scarred lungs. Despite her father’s attempts to reach her, she flies over the waterfall.

When Allister Parks finds Britt’s fragile body on the riverbank something calls out to him. Ignoring the warnings of his sister, Allister brings Britt back from the edge of death. The only problem is that an Eternal like Allister isn’t allowed to touch those who have already passed from this world. It is forbidden; an infraction punishable by death.

As Britt relishes her new cancer-free life and senior year of high school, her very existence threatens Allister’s place in this world. Allister struggles to keep Britt a secret from the Eternal Council and out of the hands of the only Eternal who already knows the truth: the one who stole her guardian angel.

Excerpt

“You were dead,” Allister agreed. “I touched you and brought you back, only it was as something different than you were before.”

“Uh, I kind of noticed,” I said, waving my hands around my body like a model showing him the latest fashions. “And that little thing about being able to heal people is new. So what did you bring me back as?” The words came out and I wanted to catch them and shove them back into my mouth. Fear swelled within me as I realized I wasn’t sure I wanted the truth…if it was bad.

How far would you go to destroy yourself?

Krishani always knew he would have to go to the Lands of Men, but he never thought it would be like this. Enemies everywhere, an ancestor he can't respect, elders he can't trust, a curse he can't stop and friends he can't help but hate. Desperate to end the pain, he sets out on a quest to find the other Flames and face the enemy that took everything from him.

Excerpt

Pux frowned. “Can you tell me something?” He didn’t know where to begin. Atara said nothing. “I thought I saw her eyes change color. She said she was a Flame, but I’ve never heard of them before.”

Atara hung her head. “The Flames are what the Valtanyana want. They are unlike any other being Across the Stars. Each one is created differently. Kaliel was the Amethyst Flame, one of the most important, from what lore has to say about her.”

Pux’s eyes widened. “You mean there are volumes about her?” He never ventured into the library in Orlondir. He never had a reason to read, but if there were books about her, he would read every day for the rest of his life.

Atara shook her head. “Their lore is kept in the Great Library with Kemplan. Even I was not aware she was a Flame. Not until it was too late.”

Pux’s heart dropped. All memory of her was being erased and there was nothing he could do to hang onto the pieces of her that lingered. One day she would be distant in his mind. He feared what life would be like years from now when he was an Elder, and she was still dead.

“I think I’ll go to the orchards,” Pux said. He drifted down the corridor towards the courtyard and Atara didn’t follow him.

“Seek Grimand. He will be leaving for Evennses soon.”

Pux gritted his teeth and turned to face Atara. “I don’t need him to return to Evennses.”

She sighed. “You cannot walk alone, it will take you days.”

His emotions unwound as he became angrier and sadder at the same time. “Kaliel would understand. How can I return to the forest when every tree reminds me of her? When we lived in the same house, ate the same food, played in the same trees? Knowing she was alive and well in Orlondir was all that made it bearable. Even the Great Oak thinks I’m invalid. How do you expect me to return without her?”

Atara hunched her shoulders. “Be patient.”

Pux stared at her with disbelief. For all of his new found knowledge she still treated him as though he was completely unworthy. His mouth dropped open, but he had no words to say. He clenched his fist tight and thought about the orchard. “If all I am to you is useless, I’m better off invisible.” He turned and vanished.

May 28: What Tomorrow May Bring #1

Tomorrow becomes today.
What will it bring?

Our potential for good is matched by that of destruction. At any moment, change can fall on the world, people fight and die, and our comfortable lives can be lost to corrupt leaders. These are circumstances we can’t imagine, but places like this exist in the world today.

What if tomorrow brings that grave reality to us, and we wake to find our lives in flux, poverty and confusion? Perhaps humanity’s insatiable appetites drive us to the brink of survival where sanity is redefined and life, as we know it, changes forever.
Tomorrow, our lives could be very dark.

Dystopian tales take us to these lightless places where suffering is a daily chore. But they also show us that in the deepest part of the night, pitched against a backdrop of despair, a beam of hope will shine brighter than ever before. And in our darkest moments, it can show us the way back.

May 29: Terra by Gretchen Powell:

Creating the Cover of Terra: A Behind-the-Scenes Look

No matter what anybody says, it’s pretty much a fact that people do judge books by their covers. And can you blame them? After all, book covers are an art in and of themselves these days – the beautiful images, illustration, and typography that are blasted across the internet pique our interest and drive our readers’ minds. The cover is a reader’s first impression of what your book will be like. It only takes a second for that instant connection to be made: Bad cover, bad book. Great cover, great book.

Now, that doesn’t always hold true, of course, since I myself have read plenty of incredible books with terrible covers, and vice versa. But it doesn’t change the fact that—especially as a self-published author—covers matter. And I knew from the get-go that I wanted the cover for TERRA to stand out, but still feel appropriate for the genre and would “fit in” with its traditionally-published book brethren. So here’s an exclusive scoop on what went into creating my debut novel’s cover.

Terra follows protagonist Terra Rhodon through a dystopian future where the planet’s natural resources have been depleted and the rich and powerful have fled to cities in the sky.

**What Everyone Had To Say About This Series**

“Seems like your normal, seemingly average university cross paranormal romance story... until the dystopian sci-fi comes in. Everything from there changes… I am gobsmacked.”
– Behind the Pages

“Quite incredible… grips the reader and won’t let go. Officially entered a good book hangover.”
– Parajunkee

June 1: Contributor & Infiltrator by Nicole Ciacchella

Unexpected Favorites

One of the things that consistently surprises me when I write is how fond I grow of some characters, especially when they start out as little more than a nebulous concept. Contributor is no exception. When I was peopling the world, I thought a lot about Dara, her parents, her boyfriend, Jonathan, and her mentor, Letizia. I certainly gave consideration to the other characters as well, but this was the core group I focused on, and so imagine my surprise when I developed a major attachment to a couple of the characters I thought would just be minor players.

The first is Javier Gutierrez, one of Dara’s rivals for the position of Assistant to the Head of Engineering...

June 3: Among the Joyful by Erin Eastham

Q&A: Among the Joyful

Q: What was your inspiration for Among the Joyful?
A: I happened to see an article about smile surgery, which is a real thing. Some young women in South Korea have a procedure done so that their default facial expression is a smile, no matter what they’re feeling. It made me think about the pressure we all feel at times to act like things are fine when they’re not, to present a happy appearance to the world no matter what’s going on inside. That was what prompted the idea for the world of Among the Joyful, where negative emotion has to be hidden if you want to be a functioning member of society.

Q: What makes Among the Joyful different from all the other YA dystopias out there?
A: I wanted to create a dystopian society that could just as easily be described as utopian. The original founders weren’t setting out to oppress people—they wanted to make life better, and in many ways they succeeded. They created a culture where service to others is valued, where citizens contribute to the public good and take care not to have a negative impact on their community. Of course, there’s a price, and that’s where it gets interesting.

Everyone knows that it’s a citizen’s duty to smile; negative emotion is a social contagion, an aggressive act against society. For Alaire Larkin, staying positive has never been a problem.

June 4: The Annihilation of Foreverland & Foreverland is Dead by Tony Bertauski

AUTHOR's INTERVIEW

Have you written in any other genres besides ya dystopian? What drew you to you this genre?

I’ve been fascinated by consciousness, identity and what this all means since I was young. I would read my grandfather’s science fiction books with elements of artificial intelligence and wonder what happened when they died? I suppose that’s why all of my writing deals with the big mysteries of life in one way or another. In a way, I write for my own exploration, in a sort of thought experiment approach, pulling apart our identities, exploring what makes us who we are. If I lost my memories, would I still be me? If I had my body parts replaced with synthetic replications, at what point would I not be me? Do I even need a body? What am I?

A few years ago, I figured I’d write a romance novel. Since all of my books have a romantic element, I thought it would be fun. Halfway through the novel, I found myself thinking more and more about the next project—a dystopian idea. So 40,000 words in, I scrapped the romance novel and got back to what I love.

June 5: The Breeders & The Believers by Katie French

Take 10 - Author Interview

What do you want to be when you grow up?
I’ve always wanted to be a back-up singer for some awesome artist. You’d get all the joy of meeting fun people and performing, but do not have to lose your freedom or worry about tabloids and paparazzi.

Who would play you in a film of your life?
Brad Pitt. It would be a really weird, concept movie.

Have you ever read or seen yourself as a character in a book or a movie?
All the time. Right now I’m pretty sure I’m Jessica Day from TV show The New Girl. But without the cute bangs. Man, I should really get some bangs.

“Being half-fae I had the ability to sense others' impending deaths. Anomalies. Deaths that didn't have to happen. Sometimes, if I had enough time to get to them, I could stop their deaths. But I never imagined I'd see my own.”

With only a week to go before she gives birth to her daughter Emma, Harley Faye Finley chooses to make the ultimate sacrifice. Trade her life for that of her daughter’s. When the time comes, she’s ready for the inevitable.

But something goes wrong.

Harley survives.

But someone…or something else is in there with her.

As this unknown, malevolent force fights for control, Harley finds herself a prisoner in her own body, and those she loves are now in mortal danger. Will she, Nolan, or anybody else be able to stop it before it’s too late?

Or will the Harley they know and love be lost to them forever?

Excerpt

When we reached the hospital, it was chaos. There were ambulances, police, and news vehicles crowding the Emergency entrance. I tried to hear what was going on, but we weren’t close enough. None of it mattered anyway. I’d be gone soon.

“I’m a couple days early, but I already called the doctor. We don’t need to go in that way.” I assured Nolan. He eyed the ER, then turned the truck around to the main entrance and pulled up in front of the glass doors. He handed the keys to the valet, thanking them before helping me out.

“You called everyone else, right?” I looked up at him as he eased me into a wheelchair. “I want them to be here for yo—I want them to be here when Emma comes.”

Nolan gave me a questioning look but nodded. “Yes, I called them. Aggie is rounding up the troops as we speak.”

“Good.” I felt a little more at ease at that thought. Of everyone that had been there with Nolan when something went wrong, I trusted Aggie the most. I was sure she could help Nolan through this too.

“Harley! Ya okay? Is it another one?” Nolan stopped and kneeled in front of me.  I was doubled over, my hand gripping the side of the wheelchair.  I could only nod, letting out puffs of breath. A couple nurses were already rushing to our side, seeing me in active labor.

“Come on, mommy. Let’s get you into a room.” The woman’s chipper tone stung me.

Mommy. I won’t get the chance to be her mommy.

Twenty minutes later we were settled into a room in the maternity ward and my contractions were coming quicker and stronger than before.

“My, first time moms usually are sitting and waiting for hours for anything to happen. You’re just moving right along, aren’t you?” The nurse shook her head after she checked my dilation. “Hope your doctor gets here before the baby does.” She joked but I gave Nolan a nervous look.

He kissed my forehead and came closer to the side of the bed. “It’ll be okay, love.”

I squeezed my eyes shut. Another wave of contractions hit me hard. My fingers gripped the bed railings and I tried to hold back the scream forcing its way up.

“Breathe, baby, breathe.” Nolan’s hand caressed my back and I let out a slow breath, tears stinging my eyes.

“I’m scared.” I couldn’t help the pitiful tone in which the words came out when the contraction finally subsided. Nolan leaned over me as I laid back. He brushed the strands from my face that were stuck in place from the sweat coating my forehead.

“Yer doin’ good. Yer almost there, love, and I’ll be right here the whole time.”

I nodded, pressing my forehead to his and his fingers intertwined with mine. I didn’t want him to be here. I didn’t want him to watch me die. But it was a comfort to know I wouldn’t be alone. I gave his large hand a squeeze, savoring the feel of it and the way mine fit in it so perfectly. God, I didn’t want to let go.

   I won’t. Not until I have to.

The doctor came into the room a couple minutes later, just as another wave of contractions subsided.

“Well, Mrs. Finley, you’re ready to go. Next contraction, I want you to push, got it?”

I nodded, still clutching Nolan’s hand as another one hit.

   “Alright, here we go. Push!”

I let out a pitiful whimper at the pressure building within me, but pushed with everything I could.

“Alright, just a couple more pushes, Harley. You’ve got this.”

I already felt my body weakening, but I did what I was supposed to. Just how the vision went. I pushed again and the world blurred around me.

“Harley, I can see her head! You’re almost there.” Nolan’s voice was filled with joy, and a tear ran down my cheek. I didn’t want to leave him, but at least he’d have her. Our baby girl.

“Okay, one more push.” The doctor’s voice was barely distinguishable, but I already knew what I had to do.

“I’ll always love you, Nolan.” My words slurred together and I gave his hand one last squeeze. With everything I had left, I pushed. I heard Emma’s wailing just before the lights faded overhead and my hand slipped out of his.

   “Harley? Harley!”
