Interview

How did you come up with the title of your book?
In the cozy genre, the titles can be really cute, so we were intent on finding titles with alliteration and that also included a breed of dogs.

Who designed the cover of your book?
Fiona Jayde, and we love it.

How long did it take you to write this book?
This book has been a process.  We originally wrote the first three chapters as a cozy mystery.  This might have taken a month or so to write.  Then we revised the chapters to be a cozy mystery romance.  This might have taken another month or so.  After we had a contract with Entangled, Lane Stone wrote the first couple of drafts in about three months, and then Jacqueline Corcoran did another draft in about a month.  Despite the way we’ve broken it down here, this process stretched over a couple of years.

How do you cope with writer’s block?
Jacqueline is regularly afflicted with writer’s block and doesn’t cope with it well.  Lane has more of a handle on this.  She tries to prevent writer’s block by writing almost every day.  That way, the characters “stay in her head,” telling her what trouble they want to get into next.  As a result, if she misses days writing, she has to “find” the characters.  She is also a big outliner.  For the times when she’s not able to stay a step ahead of writer’s block, she seeks out issues to research.  For instance, in book three of the series (Alsatians and Assassins) Cara is asked about stem cell therapy for dogs.  Some day soon, Lane will be delving into that.

Do you have a favorite line or quote in this book?
“John Kennedy was not the target.”

“Huh?”

“Jacqueline Kennedy was. And one, or a group, of those teenage girls was the shooter.”

I felt like I was going right over a cliff. Why had J.D.done this to me? “Why?”

What inspired you to write this book?
A literary agent that was representing us originally suggested that there needed to be a cozy mystery series on a doggie day spa series, so we decided to do that.  The concept has evolved over time though to include romance.

Describe the cover in 10 words or less.
The cover invites you to come on in!

If you could sum your main character into five words, what would they be?
Focusing on the main character at the start of the book, Smart, ambitious, frustrated, guilt-ridden, caring.

If your book was made into a TV series or Movie, which actors would you like to see playing your characters?
For Cara, we would choose Lane’s niece, actress, Amber Chaney. (Hunger Games, Devils’ Knot, Walking Dead.)

What are you working on right now?
“Jacqui Lane” has three upcoming novels in the Doggie Day Spa series, Dachsunds and Death, Assassins and Alsations and The Schnauzer Sting.

Jacqueline is finishing a middle grade historical paranormal inspired by Agatha Christie and writing a romantic suspense set in Paris that involves a Surrealist artist.

Lane is writing a nonfiction book about nuns in Poland who saved the lives of Jewish girls during the Holocaust and is completing the third book in the Tiara Investigations series.

Who are your favorite characters?
Some of the supporting characters are, if we do say so ourselves, very funny.

There’s royal watcher Emma; the self-promoting, and paranoid Reverend McInerney; and my favorite, Cara’s attorney, conspiracy theorist, Michael Pritchett.

Blog Tour {Excerpt/Spotlight & Giveaway} Moccasin Trace by Hawk MacKinney

Book Info
Title- Moccasin Trace
By- Hawk MacKinney
Genre- Historical Romance
Published By- ArcheBooks Publishing
Publication Date- March 2014

Blurb

… it was about the land…a tale of love and loss and hope…

Hamilton Ingram looked out across the fertile Georgia bottomlands that were Moccasin Hollows, seeing holdings it had taken generations of Ingrams to build.  No drop of slave sweat ever shed in its creation.  It was about the land…his trust, his duty to preserve it for the generation of Ingrams to come…

It is July of 1859, a month of sweltering dog days and feverish emotional bombast.  Life is good for widower Rundell Ingram and his Hazel-eyed, roan-haired son, Hamilton.  Between the two of them, they take care of Moccasin Hollows, their rustic dogtrot ancestral home, a sprawling non-slave plantation in the rolling farming country outside Queensborough Towne in east Georgia.  Adjoining Ingram lands is Wisteria Bend, the vast slave-holding plantation of Andrew and Corinthia Greer, their daughter Sarah, and son Benjamin.

Both families share generations of long-accepted traditions, and childhood playmates are no longer children.  The rangy, even-tempered Norman-Scottish young Hamilton is smitten with Sarah, who has become an enticing capricious beauty—the young lovers more in love with each passing day, and only pleasant times ahead of them.

But a blood tide of war is sweeping across the South, a tide that might be impossible to stand before.

Excerpt

He took special care to have quiet times for Sarah, 'specially since night before last. He got real excited when she told him she might be with child again.  She hadn't been sleeping well, often wanted him to rub her aching back.  Now he knew why.
Threadbare clothes and unshorn hair gave Hamilton Bothington Graeme Ingram the look of a run-down, unkempt derelict instead of heir to one of the largest non-slave plantations in Saint George Parish.  He ducked under what was left of the split-rail fence with its crooked corner post.  Rails and most posts had long gone up in the smoke of hoards of campfires.
"Step wide."  He reached back to help her through.  "I don't want the mother of our children to step on a canebrake rattler catchin' sun on this fine day."
"Lord have mercy."  Sarah clutched her bonnet in her hand so as not to get it snagged in the coiled tangle of wire.  "I suppose it's up to me to get used to your hoverin' over me again."
"Yep," he grinned.  "Reckon my favorite sweetheart will have to do just that."
"Your favorite sweetheart?"  She giggled, wrinkled her nose at him.  "Just listen to you and your Ingram fiddle-faddled talk."
He grinned as she brushed back strands of the golden hair Hamilton loved to run his fingers through.  She gathered her mended skirt, slipped her hand into his, and quickly stepped wide over the fallen post.
"C'mon..."  Her voice lilted soft, and she squeezed her grip on his hand.  "Let's hurry."
Her singular tenderness refused to let the devastation around them blight their few alone-times.  In the spoliation around them, such times when they managed to make it just the two of them held a more-than-special meaning.

Book Blitz {Excerpt} Our Kind of Love by Shane Morgan

Our Kind of Love
By- Shane Morgan
Genre- YA/NA Contemporary Romance
Expected Publication Date- June 2014

Reign is convinced that Nate is the perfect guy for her. That’s until Micah walks into her Mom’s restaurant looking for a job. Now Reign can’t seem to stop her heart from yearning for the guy with the mysterious sea blue eyes and melting smile.

Will she live up to everyone’s expectations, or risk it all for someone with a troubled past?

Micah is all but perfect. He’s spent eight months in a juvenile detention center back in Colorado for his unintentional involvement in a crime. Now at nineteen and hoping to escape his ghosts, he lands a part-time job working at a seaside restaurant in Newport, Rhode Island where he meets the irresistible Reign. Micah can’t help the way he feels whenever he’s around her, but she’s already taken and he doesn't want to disrupt her life or get himself in anymore trouble. But then his attraction for Reign proves too strong to deny, and Micah finds that he just might discover a reason to stop running.

And now an excerpt from 'Our Kind of Love'-

THE FIRST sunrise you see after a passionate kiss is so much different from the ones you glimpse on any other day. You’re more motivated to stop and stare.
Even though Reign told me she wouldn’t be coming out for a run this morning, like a fool I still jogged down to the beach and waited for her. I had a feeling in my gut last night and when I opened my eyes earlier, I thought that today would be a great day for me. But she’s usually here before daybreak and the dark clouds have already moved aside, giving way to the blazing sun almost an hour ago. I have to get it in my head that she’s not coming for real.
Sulking, I twist around to head home, that’s when I see the familiar glowing face and sparkling eyes smiling back at me. I stop instantly in my tracks as an air of relief rushes out of me.
“Hey,” she says, her voice sounding sweeter than ever. My heart begins to pound so much I fear it’ll leave dents in my chest.
Reign swings her arms and slowly walk down to me in the sand. “How’s it going?”
“How’s it going?” I repeat in a playful tone, folding my arms. “Not so good. Let’s see, I slept like crap last night ‘cause you told me you had stuff to think about, and you didn’t even want to go running with me this morning so I’m kinda bummed out that you didn’t get to admire my body earlier when I was drenched in sweat.”
She beams at my pouty face and inches closer, tipping on the toes of her sneakers to give me a kiss on the cheek. Then she wraps her arms around my neck and breathes, “I’m sorry. There’s nothing to think about. I want to be with you, Micah.”
I ease her away to confirm what she said. “You mean that, you really want to be with me?”
“Yes,” she says with a laugh. “I do.”

Excerpt

“I wasn’t ready.”

“Ready for what?”  The enforcement was stern with his questions, simple and to the point.  He was certainly not trying to make small talk.

“To be paired.  I freaked out a little.  I needed to see what a Single’s life was like.”  Braiden’s responses flowed out of his mouth with such fluidity.

“And you thought the best option was to run away to find your answer?  We would have granted you access.”

Braiden made no reply, and instead remained eerily quiet.

“Well, what did you find, Mr. Connor?  That the Sweeper life isn’t a desirable one?  That one is much better off following our rules and regulations?”

“A Sweeper’s life is not what I want.”

Although he was saying everything I’d always wanted him to say, something about it was off. He responses seemed so, rehearsed.

“I wasn’t thinking clearly.  I’m sorry for any trouble I caused.  It won’t happen again.”

“It better not.  You’ve been assigned to this district, and you have been paired with Krissa.  You’ll be on probation for the next year, which means one slip up and you’ll be in the Sweeper unit permanently, or worse.  Understood?”

“Yes Sir.”  This time he wasn’t mocking the officer.  He looked ashamed.

“Krissa, do you agree to these terms?”  Did I really have another option?  If I didn’t agree, I could end up single, but would a life with Braiden make me happy?  Yes, I still loved him, but how was I to let him ease back into my life after all the hurt he caused?

Excerpt
Elyse told us that Jared had showed up with a dozen of her favorite flowers, fire-and-ice roses. Then she showed us the small gold heart dangling from the dainty necklace Jared had bought her. They had gone to a local, family owned Italian restaurant for dinner.
My phone chimed. It was Trevor, texting to say he was free. I responded to meet me here.
I caught Elyse’s eye as I put my phone away.
She raised her eyebrows.
I nodded. “He’s on his way. Something came up.”
“Oh, well, I’m glad he’s available now,” she offered. I knew she was just as upset as I was about his behavior. She didn’t like seeing me hurt.
Just before the sun set, the fire pit roared to life—the result of using a bit too much lighter fluid. I roasted and ate marshmallows until I was full, then rejoined the group. I felt the absence of the heat from the fire when I walked away, and I picked up my sweatshirt. I threaded my arms through the sleeves and prepared to pull it over my head when movement in the shadows at the far edge of the property caught my eye. I froze with my arms in the sleeves, my hands holding the neck open. The light barely reached the dark trees. My eyes strained to distinguish shadows from branches. I blinked.
The silhouette of a person stood between the trees.
“Hey, Brynn! Your man’s here,” Elyse taunted.
I spun around.
“Decided to come without me?” Trevor teased.
I mumbled something and turned back toward the tree line, scanning for the shape. Of course I couldn’t spot it…him?…again. It seemed like the shadow of a guy.
“I thought you’d be happier to see me.” I felt Trevor’s arms go around my waist as I turned to face him.
I reached up on my tip-toes and gave him a quick kiss. “I am. I just thought I saw someone back there.”
Trevor’s hands grabbed my shoulders and gently pushed me back so he could see my face. His medium build frame was strong enough to hold me without letting me fall. “Back there, just now?” he asked, inclining his head to the back of the yard. I noticed his hair. Usually he kept his sandy hair slightly wild, but it was short. It made him look older, more sophisticated.
I nodded and finished putting my sweatshirt on. “Your hair cut looks good. It’s a nice change.”
Trevor brushed past me with fury in his blue eyes.
I trailed after him to the lowest section of the patio; it curved out into the yard. He scanned the trees and stared hard where I had spotted the lurking figure.
He started to step off the dry patio onto the water-logged lawn, but I grabbed his arm.
“Trev,” I said.
He turned around.
“I have to check this out, Brynn,” he said.
“Why?”
“Don’t you think it’s weird someone’s out there?” he said, using his other hand to remove mine.
“I do, but why is it up to you to check it out?”
“It just is.”
His footsteps made soft, squishy sounds on the grass, and his jeans absorbed some of the standing water.
I started after him.
“Stay here, Brynn. I’ll be fine,” he shouted over his shoulder as he stalked toward the spot.
“This is ridiculous,” I said. “You’re not going by yourself.”
Trevor continued walking, but it was his voice that froze me in my spot.
I stood on the very edge of the patio, rooted in place, watching him walk toward the dark corner and disappear from view. I blocked out the music and voices behind me. I needed focus to hear if there was a struggle. I couldn’t let anything happen to him.
I don’t know how long I stood there—it seemed like an hour, but only minutes passed before he sauntered back into the clearing.
I kept an eye over his shoulder since he didn’t seem to care to watch his back. He shrugged a shoulder. “It was just a neighborhood kid who wanted to sneak away from his house and smoke. There’s nothing to worry about.”
I gave the area a last glance. The profile had seemed much bigger than a kid. “Is he going to come out?”
“He’s not invited.”
We rejoined the group. If anyone noticed what Trevor did, they didn’t bring it up. I pretended to be invested in the conversation. His explanation seemed reasonable, even if it didn’t sit right with me. I’d always known how Trevor felt, whether he was anxious, happy, stressed, or deceitful—like he was in this case. It had been a natural evolution of our relationship, and he’d teased me relentlessly about it…part out of resentment of invading his emotions, part out of curiosity of how I could. Plus, with his recent behavior, I no longer took what he told me without question, and I constantly checked what he said against how he felt.
I checked the woods multiple times that night. I couldn’t be positive, but I was pretty sure I spotted the form back there a few times, trying to blend in with the shadows. Quiet. Still. Observing.
Not once was there the unmistakable glow of a lit cigarette anywhere around his body.
