Book Tour {Promo Post & Giveaway} Gypsy by Trisha Leigh

Release Date: 05/13/14
378 pages

Summary from Goodreads

Inconsequential: not important or significant.

Synonyms: insignificant, unimportant, nonessential, irrelevant

In the world of genetic mutation, Gypsy’s talent of knowing a person’s age of death is considered a failure. Her peers, the other Cavies, have powers that range from curdling a blood still in the vein to being able to overhear a conversation taking place three miles away, but when they’re taken from the sanctuary where they grew up and forced into the real world, Gypsy, with her all-but-invisible gift, is the one with the advantage.

The only one who’s safe, if the world finds out what they can do.

When the Cavies are attacked and inoculated with an unidentified virus, that illusion is shattered. Whatever was attached to the virus causes their abilities to change. Grow. In some cases, to escape their control.

Gypsy dreamed of normal high school, normal friends, a normal life, for years. Instead, the Cavies are sucked under a sea of government intrigue, weaponized genetic mutation, and crushing secrets that will reframe everything they’ve ever been told about how their "talents" came to be in the first place.

When they find out one of their own has been appropriated by the government, mistreated and forced to run dangerous missions, their desire for information becomes a pressing need. With only a series of guesses about their origins, the path to the truth becomes quickly littered with friends, enemies, and in the end, the Cavies ability to trust anyone at all.

EXCERPT

The library is one of the bigger rooms in the house, converted from what used to be the upstairs parlor. The Professor looks out a window that overlooks the back lawn. Shelves, sagging with dusty books, cover every inch of the light blue, fifteen-foot walls. The morning sunlight still lingers around the front of the house, making this space dim, but motes of dust twirl and waltz like members of a royal court on the pale, reaching beams.

All at once, happiness floods my bloodstream, as though someone smacks good cheer into my chest cavity through my shoulder blades. The strange desire to burst into song hums along my nerve endings, as though I’m a Disney princess summoning her bird and varmint attendants at the window. It takes serious concentration to bite back the urge.

The abrupt change in mood announces another Cavy’s presence, but as hard as I try to glare at Pollyanna, my mouth refuses to cooperate. Her mutation, a reverse empath alternation that allows her disposition to affect the moods of people in close proximity, is more...invasive than most. Losing control of my own mind never fails to make me feel icky.

And given her insistence on cynicism and anger, she's not aptly named. Not at all.

“Feeling good, Gyspy?” She shakes out her long, blond hair and pins me with china-blue eyes. The faux-happy shroud crawling from her to me dissolves and my smile finally falls away. Polly nods. “That's better. You look weird when you smile.”

“Pollyanna, we have spoken at length about the perils of using your gifts on your fellow Cavies.” The Professor's patient, tired voice reprimands the youngest of his students, if only by several months.

The Philosopher, who runs Darley, took us in before we were three months old, and we all arrived between sixteen and seventeen years ago.

“Sorry, sir.”

She's not sorry, but his chastisement and her apology are part of our daily routine. Of all the kids here, Pollyanna is my least favorite. She's everyone's least favorite, and even though she knows it she doesn't change. I guess she doesn't care.

“Sorry for what? Fucking with people again?” The voice bleeds out of thin air before Haint shimmers into view around it, face first. She leans against one of the bookcases once her shoulder appears, examining her nails as she waits for her daily reprimand.

The Professor doesn't disappoint. “Language, dear.”

He says nothing to me, not even hello, nor does he issue a warning to Haint about using her ability to go invisible. It’s not dangerous. Pollyanna could make any one of us walk straight off a cliff if she felt particularly suicidal that day.

The twins Athena and Goose arrive together, a tornado of rough-housing elbows and flashes of reddish hair, loosing half a shelf of books onto the floor and toppling an end table before getting themselves under control. The Professor ignores them, having long ago resigned himself to their antics.

We're all here now, at least those who are expected. Mole is still enduring his weekly brain prodding and so is Reaper. They’re our lethal Cavies, and are kept for testing more often and for longer than the rest of us. We're categorized according to our level of usefulness, the details of our mutations and abilities listed in records the Philosopher hopes might convince the government we could be potential assets as opposed to threats.

Three Operationals, two Substantials, one Developmental, three Unstables, and one Inconsequential. That’s me. The one who will never be an asset to anyone but can't be locked away and forgotten like an Unstable, either. They don't know what to do with me, so I shuffle along with the group.

“Everyone sit down, please.”

The Professor's command sounds more like a genteel request, and we drop into a circle of cross-legged teenagers on the oval Oriental rug that smothers the center of the room. He paces behind us, passing binder-clipped pages into our waiting hands.

I grab mine, excited as the title filters through my eyes and into my brain. It's a thesis, written by the Scientist back in the 1960s: Genetic Mutation and the Human Brain.

He died before any of us were born but his thoughts and experiments, his studies, help the scientists at Darley Hall figure out what might have caused the mutations that resulted in our “gifts.” Maybe one day they'll figure out how to switch off those screwy genes and I can touch another person without at least one layer in between us. Without the protection, touching someone means seeing a number in my mind.

The age the other person is going to die.

My “talent” is creepy at best, totally useless at worst, and being able to get rid of it has been a hidden desire for the whole of my life.

Publication Date- June 6th, 2014
Genre-  Historical Romance

Blurb

The Hundred Years War rages around Adalira Mortimer's life and country, but she is not what is expected of a Lady; instead of dresses and tea, she dreams about weapons and war.

Bastian Kyros is not typical royalty. Being a warrior is in his blood, not paperwork and peace-keeping.

Tradition drives their families. She is expected to don her manners and win a worthy husband, and he is expected to drop his sword and do what's right for the sake of his family's name, land, and future.

Their chance meeting at the party of the season may offer them both the chance to find what they desire. Brought together by their longing for battle, their greatest fight may be in winning over their families and conquering their own pride.

A lull in battle does not mean there is peace. The greatest of wars are fought in the heart.

Excerpt

"Dare I say you are enjoying yourself, your Grace?"

"I've only arrived a moment ago and am ready to leave already. Does this appear enjoyable to you?"

Bastian's droll stare made Iason chuckle. "You can pretend all you like, but I can see your amusement."

"I am amused at the lengths people will go to in order to snare themselves a worthy spouse." Bastian smiled and straightened his clothes. His new red tunic made his tanned skin look even richer. The silver trim accented in a way he didn't expect before. He was thoroughly impressed with the pieces when they were presented to him. When he saw them hanging in the woman's shop, he scoffed and commented on how they were too dainty and girly. She merely waved him off and told him to try them on. The moment the fine silk slid across his skin, he sighed. None of his battle clothes felt that way. The pants fit just right as well. He felt slightly out of place with such finery on, but he could admit that he wasn't hating the clothes.

"Yes, well, some people enjoy the finery more than others." His knowing smile made Bastian huff an annoyed breath.

"I couldn't very well come in here looking like I just slayed a dragon, now could I?"

"That doesn't work for most women, no," Iason agreed. He reached up and straightened Bastian's silver mask. "The red gems on this thing look terribly sparkly, your Grace. Are you sure you aren't feeling girly yet?"

Bastian swatted his hand away. "Unless you are making certain my face remains covered, step away. You're blocking my view."

"Your view of what?" Iason asked excitedly as he turned and took a step back so he was standing with Bastian.

"There," Bastian nodded his head to the right,  "a group of matching clothing. Why do people dress to match as if they have no personality or thought process of their own? It seems silly to me."

"You mean the flock of green down there beside the dance floor? Yes, I agree. That does look a bit overly dramatic when they all do it, though I find it endearing when couples do it. Even when it's slight. Almost announcing that they planned to arrive together and are, in fact, together. It's beautiful."

Bastian rolled his eyes. "What a romantic you are. I'm sure your wife will one day enjoy that terribly."

"I don't plan to marry."

"No?" Bastian asked. He kept his question light and his attention on the people.

"I mean, I would love to have a family one day; some sons, a beautiful wife that I can worship properly, a place that is only mine, but I don’t think that life is meant for people like us."

"Like us?" Bastian kept his eyes wandering over the crowd. "You plan to worship your wife? That is something I could never do."

"You know, we are warriors. All of this," Iason waved his hand in a gesture to include everyone and everything in the room, "isn't us. I mean, it's you and your people, but I'm just a regular man." He chuckled then continued, "Worship is the right word. Have you seen the female form? It is certainly something to dedicate some time to, sir. You should try it sometime. You'd be a lot less stressed and stern all the time." He elbowed his friend playfully.

"It's not for me either. The only reason I would agree to marry is to protect my family name. I have no interest in all of that."

"I have lots of interest in it. It appeals to me on many levels, but I don’t know if my lifestyle and standing will allow for it. I hope it does, though." Iason looked around and then slapped Bastian's arm. "Look, there. The brunette with the purple gown. Tell me you wouldn't love to roll over and see her every morning."

"Aye, she's a fine lady, I'm sure," he nodded tightly. "but as you can see, she has two gentleman callers already and certainly wouldn't want to roll over and see my face every morning. That is where the problem lies."

SYNOPSIS

Earth as we know it no longer exists. Humanity has destroyed itself and with it any chance we may have had of returning.

What had started as a six month voyage through the stars becomes a nightmare when the passengers are stranded in space without hope. With Earth gone, the crew and passengers of The Dawn Light are left wandering the galaxy in search of a new planet. After years of searching, one is found, but no one is prepared for the terror that takes claim of the Galaxy Cruiser when one by one the people begin to turn, mutating into flesh eating monsters.

For Scarlett, Hunter and Rolf, this means being trapped in a sardine can full of piranhas. Their only hope... to get the hell out before they’re next, but someone on the ship wants to be the only survivor to reach the new planet and will do anything to stop them. But just how far are they willing to go?

Death no longer has a limit.

“Grams?”

A series of groans escaped the partly gaping mouth.

“Hunter! Get Dr. Ora up here now!” She took her eyes away from her grandmother just long enough to call over her shoulder. She didn’t wait to see if he’d do it. She knew he would. She turned her attention back to the woman on the bed. “It’s okay,” she said, putting a brave smile on her face. “Hunter’s going to get help. Everything will be okay. I promise.”

Grams continued to watch her with emptiness in her eyes. It was a cold sort of blankness. Scarlett had only ever seen it once before, when she’d gone to sickbay right after the riots. She had seen the patients locked behind the sheets of Plexiglass. There had been a sort of vacancy in their expressions as they stared off into space. Some were mumbling to themselves, rocking. Others just stood there, staring, saying nothing. Scarlett shuddered at the memory, at having it forced back on her by her grandmother’s equally jarring stare.

“Grams?” she whispered quietly, squeezing the frail fingers clutched between both of her hands. “Can you say something?”

A puff of air slipped past her cracked lips. The tiny, barely audible sound squeaked in the thick silence. Her mouth moved in what looked like words, but nothing seemed to be filtering through.

“What?” Scarlet brought her ear closer, hoping to catch even a syllable of what her grandmother was trying to say.

The arms came seemingly out of nowhere. They wound around Scarlett with strengths that should have been impossible for an old woman on her sickbed. She was dragged forward, landing in a flailing heap across her grandmother’s thin chest, her arms trapped at her sides. The pillow soaked her scream. A high hiss split the air, amplifying the panic running ice cold through her veins. The top of her knees struck the side of the mattress as she kicked, fighting to be free of the sour tang coating the inside of her mouth with every effected breath.

Pain so blinding, so white-hot, she nearly passed out from it, splintered through her shoulder. Something warm and sticky rushed down her arm. The sickening scent of blood perfumed the air. Scarlett shrieked. By some miracle, she was suddenly free, flying backwards and landing in a dazed heap on the floor beneath the bed. Numbing madness sunk cold fingers into her brain, seemingly freezing the world around her to a syrupy speed. She was only loosely aware of the groan above her, even less aware when the mattress squeaked and sheets rustled. The erratic pounding between her ears had only one focus—escape.

The carpet sliced through the soft tissues of her knees as she crawled to the door. She stumbled through just as another unearthly moan pummeled the chaos drumming within the walls of her skull. She scrambled, half-turning, half-falling onto her back, as she whipped around to see the deformed figure behind her, dressed in her grandmother’s floral nightdress.

Jennifer Theriot hails from the Great State of Texas. She is a career woman, working as CFO of a Texas based real estate investment firm. Working in her capacity as CFO, she felt something was missing and discovered her passion for writing novels--mostly at night and on weekends.

In her limited spare time Jennifer enjoys being outdoors; preferably somewhere on a beach curled up with a good book. Spending time with family and friends, watching a baseball game and enjoying a good bottle of wine are usually on her to-do lists. Jennifer is also 'MiMi' to two beautiful grandchildren and a mom to three grown children, all of whom she adores. Theriot is an admitted music junkie, loving every type of music, which takes up most of the memory on her iPhone. She listens to music from sun up to sun down and her love of music is reflected a great deal in her books.

Jennifer took a chance that there could be an interest in romance with middle aged couples who are finding themselves at a crossroads and wrote her debut novel Out of the Box Awakening, which centers on the hope of finding happiness and passion through unexpected heartache. It emphasizes the need for family and friends as Jennifer has learned in her own life. The book has been described as "Mature Sexy" by one reviewer.

Her second book in the Out of the Box series titled Out of the Box Regifted has just been released and she is currently working on the third book, Out of the Box Everlasting. 2 Novellas from her other character's POV are planned as well.
