Release Day Blitz {Giveaway} Hope Over Fear by J.A. DeRouen

Synopsis

Today is the day – the day that the man I love marries someone else. I don’t deserve pity or sympathy. I’ve made my bed. I left Mason and ripped his heart to pieces as I ran away. The guilt and sorrow consume me, threatening to choke me everyday.

But today is a new beginning. Today is the day I will wake up with a renewed resolve and determination to do better … to be better … to be worthy. My name is Sara Preston, and this is my story about what happens after.

Hope Over Fear can be read as a stand alone novel.

Excerpt

I slide on my jeans and set out to find Sara. When I reach the doorway of the living room, I see her leaning against the kitchen counter, lost in thought. She’s wearing my shirt, and damn if that doesn’t make my dick twitch. She doesn’t see me, so I take this opportunity to drink her in. The sun shines through her mussed wavy brown hair, and the faintest smile is playing on her lips. She lifts her fingers up to her lips and closes her eyes. A soft giggle escapes her, and I’m mesmerized. Watching her in this private moment, I feel it deep in my chest. So deep, I find myself rubbing my heart to ease the pressure.

Sara breaks out of her trance and reaches up into the cabinet to retrieve two coffee cups. When she lifts her arms, the bottom of my shirt raises up just enough to reveal a hint of her barely-there panties and the under curve of her delectable ass. God, this girl will be the death of me.

I quickly and silently walk up behind Sara, unable to wait another second before I touch her. I wrap my arm around her waist, the other arm around her chest, and gently lick up her neck until I reach her ear. Her body quickly jumps at my touch and then settles into a sultry shiver that runs the length of her body.

Book 1 - Breathe Series
Young Adult Romantic Suspense

Jasmine’s life wasn’t normal for a 16 year old girl. It hadn’t been normal since the murder of her older sister, Daisy, two years ago. Her life had been changed forever. The monster that murdered Daisy was never caught. That was the reason her family decided to move away from their hometown in Southern California, to start over. Hopefully in a place where the last name Rourke wouldn’t bring on staring or judgment or morbid curiosity.

In Lafayette, Louisiana things are quite a bit different but in a good way. Good manners, Cajun accents and a whole lot of Southern Hospitality all make her think things are going in the right direction. On top of that the most gorgeous boy she has ever met is interested in her. Her new friends are better than she could have hoped for even if she is worried about what they might think when they find out who she is. Life would be perfect if odd things didn’t keep happening. Creepy phone calls, texts, and flowers in her locker start adding up quickly to something terrifying. Could the Monster have followed them to Lafayette? Was he coming after her this time? Maybe she was just worrying unnecessarily…or not.

Excerpt

Cold coffee. Is there anything worse?

Staring down into my owl coffee mug, the cool brown liquid gawks up at me in mock humor. The cord is lying on the counter beside the pot, not plugged into the wall where it was last night. Instead, Heather’s—my looks-obsessed roommate—straightener is plugged in. What’s the point of having a timed coffeepot if it’s unplugged every morning before you get a chance to use it? I grit my teeth and blow my bangs from my forehead.

I snatch the cord from the plug-in and toss the straightener on her bed. Hopefully, she’ll get the point. Instead of pouring the coffee down our sink, I sip on it. Hell shall freeze over before I go a morning without my coffee. Hell frozen-over would probably be hotter than my coffee right now. I grab my backpack, tie my blond hair into a messy bun, push up my thick, black-rim hipster glasses, and walk out of our dorm room.

I lock the door and head toward class, the aroma of perfumes swarming my nose. A few girls in towels race down the hall, screaming. Like clockwork, a tall muscular guy follows behind them, a huge I’m-going-to-get-some grin on his face. College is definitely a guy’s wet dream come true. Especially, in a co-ed dorm. He’ll have one of them pressed against their dorm room door tonight. They’re all so predictable.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s perfectly fine to date. But, doing it wisely is a completely different issue. Girls aren’t the smartest when it comes to dating. The three C’s that guys can’t stand are clinginess, crying, and clumsiness. I know it’s not possible to walk like a runway model twenty-four seven. And we all know girls tend to cry, especially around that time of the month. But it’s all about the game. You’ve got to play it right, so you can snag a great guy. It’s so easy to rope one in as long as you focus, and I don’t mean on his abs.

Summary from Goodreads

Europe? Nope. Mexico? Nope. Key West?

Not me. This summer, I'm playing nursemaid to my sister. Yeah, I know. Relatively good looking twenty-two-year-olds don't spend the summer bedside in the cancer ward, but that's the plan - until my sister threatens me with bodily harm unless I get on the plane.

That's when I met him. He likes me. Really likes me. But more than that, he loves my boobs -- like can't get enough. I have no idea how to tell him that they'll be gone soon. Courtesy of a preventative double mastectomy. Yep. That's what testing positive for the breast cancer gene mutation will do to a girl.

But don't feel sorry for me. I'm enjoying him, holding on until the last possible minute, while I muster up the strength to tell him, and watch him walk away.

Excerpt

My hands drift over his arms and shoulders, caressing the taut muscles under the hot surface of his skin. The smell that’s ever-present—salt and coconut-scented sunblock—is enhanced by the scorching afternoon sun. I don’t need another drop of alcohol for the rest of my vacation.

I could get drunk from inhaling him.

His large hands cup my butt, holding me up, and strong fingers knead at my soft flesh as he stands on his toes in the shallows.

My lips are a whisper away, and he breathes in my moan before I close my eyes and lower my head.

A shower of fireworks goes off behind my eyelids.

Shay answers my groan with his own, and he weaves his hands into my hair. My scalp tingles as he pulls me deeper into his kiss. I wind my arms around his back, slipping a few fingers into the waistband of his trunks. My fingers explore the hard planes of muscle under his scorching skin where back meets quite firm backside.

Shay tears his lips from mine, and a sense of loss sweeps over me until he traces hot kisses across my cheek, my ear, and down my neck.

Then he reclaims my mouth again in a soft, searching kiss.

I whimper, my heart thudding, threatening to explode from the confines of my chest. This is madness, but that doesn’t stop me from returning his kiss with equal ferocity. He tastes bitter and tangy and oh, so sweet. I can’t get enough of his delicious mouth.

I want more. My hands take on a life of their own, moving from his back to his arms to his hard chest with a desperate, grasping yearning.

He wants me. His erection presses against me, and with just the right movement, I could orgasm right here.

I want him with a ferocity I’ve never known. I’d been touched before, all over my body.

But no man has ever touched my heart.

Until now.

I am so fucked.

A bell sounds from the boat, smothering the electrical current sparking between us.

The signal to return. Time to head back to shore.

I’m sad, but grateful. A little more time and he could have convinced me to slip off my suit and get it on in the water.

This man is too hot for his own good—and mine.

I regret now I have to go with Bennie tonight, and that we won’t be back until late.

I’m all about supporting a friend and showing some love, but I’ve got an itch for a beautiful Irish boy that needs to be scratched.

Hard.

Today, I write stories featuring nice guys (or nice guys in-the-making) in between my other jobs writing research reports for a commercial real estate company, refereeing two young daughters, navigating the teen waters with a too-cute-for-his-own-good son, spoiling a neurotic cat, and making my darling, patient husband shake his head. SYNOPSIS

Sheridan Hendley is a professor and psychologist, not a sleuth. When her colleague at Cold Creek College, Adam Millberg, is murdered, she is charged with helping the Detective assigned to the case. Immediately, her good friend becomes the prime suspect and Sheridan is motivated to help solve the case and prove Kim isn’t guilty. It also becomes apparent that Sheridan is attracted to the handsome Detective. As Sheridan tries to implement the crisis plan on campus and connect all the people in Adam’s life, she finds that many women have a motive for Adam’s murder. Slashed tires are the first indication that Sheridan’s involvement is obviously making someone nervous.

About This Author

Christa Nardi is and always has been an avid reader. Her favorite authors have shifted from Carolyn Keene and Earl Stanley Gardner to more contemporary mystery/crime authors over time, but mystery/crime along with romance are her preferred choices for leisure reading. Christa also has been a long time writer from poetry and short stories growing up to technical, research, and nonfiction in her professional life. With Murder at Cold Creek College, Christa is joining many other reader/writers in writing one genre she enjoys reading – the cozy mystery. Christa Nardi is a pen name for a real life professor/psychologist from the Northeast.

Interview

How long have you been writing?
Probably since elementary school.  I always wrote stories and then in high school also wrote poetry.  Since then, most of my writing has been nonfiction and more technical in nature (e.g. textbooks), but occasionally I would jot down an idea or two.

What makes you like to write?
Like talking or acting, writing is a way to express how the writer feels and thinks about certain issues. The writer poses a problem and then solves it through the characters, with a range of considerations and personalities. It is a way to think through situations or people or political issues.  In Murder at Cold Creek College, the most obvious issue is sexual harassment, one that many women face or have faced regardless of where they work.

Who is your favorite author and why?
That is a tough one.  It is so hard to choose.  Of current cozy mystery writers, I always look forward to the next one in the series by Vanessa Gray Bartal (Lacy Steele Mystery Series), Kassandra Lamb (Kate Huntington Mystery Series), and Ellen Crosby (Wine Country Mysteries), and of course Janet Evanovich.  Outside of mysteries, I also read science fiction/fantasy, and my favorite fantasy author is Mercedes Lackey – her stories weave in a theme of humanism as well as feminism.  I guess that is more than one.

What are your favorite things to do besides writing?
I love to read – mystery, cozy mystery, romance, and scifi/fantasy.  I also love to garden, and spend many hours working in mine.  When not writing, reading or gardening, I am likely doing jigsaw puzzles or logic puzzles.

How long did it take you to write Murder at Cold Creek College?
Murder at Cold Creek College started with several ideas that I wrote down.  As I added to my ideas, it became more of a story.  It probably took about a year, with some times when I didn’t write at all, and some when I wrote a lot.

What was your favorite scene to write?
Another hard question.  Obviously, I am invested in all the scenes.  Two scenes come to mind though – the scene with Max trying to stand down against Brett in the beginning, and the scene with Sheridan and the Chancellor and his wife at the end.

Who designed the book cover?
My sister designed the cover for me and did a great job!

Who is your favorite character in your book and why?
I think my favorite characters (other than Sheridan) are Kim and Mitch, for very different reasons.  Kim is the BFF, and brings energy and enthusiasm to the scenes; she also is the most vulnerable in this story.  Mitch, on the other hand, is the down to earth, stable figure with the dry sense of humor.  All three are tight, but with their own agenda.

When did you start writing?
As noted above, probably in elementary school with teacher assigned creative writing.  Sadly, once in high school, the assignments were much more technical and structured – more like my nonfiction writing.

How many books did you write before you were published?
That depends on if you count the ones that I never finished or wrote and never did anything with (and now don’t have a clue where they are).  Fiction-wise, this is first book I have finished and published and that’s pretty exciting!  Murder at Cold Creek College is self-published.  I have thought about trying the agent route with the sequel, Murder in the Arboretum though. We’ll see.

Again, thank you for having me on your blog today!  Christa

It's the Grand Finale for
Second on the Right
by Elizabeth Los

Did you miss visiting Captain Hook's storybook world? There's still time to go check it out!

14  - Launch - More about Second on the Right and Elizabeth Los
What do you hope readers will take with them when they read your book?
I hope readers will be able to sit back and enjoy the ride. I love books that take me on a journey full of twists and turns. If a reader gleans a message from the story, great! But otherwise, I just want it to be fun. I hope they find themselves liking Hook as I always have.

15 - Kelly P's Blog - Interview
Who is your favorite character in your book and why?
James is my favorite character in Second on the Right and also the inspiration/reason why I wrote Second on the Right in the first place. I always felt there was more to Hook’s story than just what we find in Barrie’s version. What motivated him and pushed him to seek revenge on Peter Pan? Was it really just the loss of his right hand or was there more to it than that?

Coffee Books & Art - The Inspiration for Second on the Right
As for the title, Second on the Right, this is a nod to the original J.M. Barrie text. Most known the phrase as second star to the right, but in Barrie’s Peter Pan, it was actually "second to the right, and straight on till morning". I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to write about Captain Hook if Barrie hadn’t written the story in the first place. So I felt it was only fitting to give a nod, multiple times in the novel in fact, to him and the original work.

Dividing by Zero - The Legend of Captain Hook
Said to be the only man Long John Silver feared, even the name “James Hook” is an alias. No one knows the true identity of the captain or where he came from. The man known as Captain James Hook has a cadaverous appearance, his pale face appearing as a spectral in the dark...

Musings of Immortals - Character Description of Captain Hook

16 - Sarah's StoryLines - Excerpt
Eileen woke with a start. Carefully, she peeled back the privacy sheet. A lump caught in her throat. The cabin door was open. She frowned. In the dim moonlight, a shadow stood just within the captain’s quarters. It moved. Her heart raced. She blinked, then stared. The dark silhouette glided silently. She watched, unbelieving. The shape loomed over the captain. She released the sheet.

17 - Mary Terrani.com - Character Description for Eileen

Eileen

18 - The Wonderings Of One Person - The Mistral Thief
Captain Benedict’s ship is what is typically depicted of pirate vessels, a galleon ship... How does it compare with Captain Hook’s Jolly Roger?

Christy's Cozy Corners - Captain Hook's Crew of the Jolly Roger
Captain James Hook had a rather unique and, for the most part, loyal crew. The crew of the Jolly Roger was a lot of villainous pirates. But though they were a rough bunch and at times fear their captain’s temper, they were like family to James. Two specific men stand out among the group: Smee and Starkey...
"I had a hard time keeping my self interested in what was going on. But I am very glad I did. About half way through the story becomes so much better. It moves along quicker and keeps your attention until the end."

22 - My Devotional Thoughts - Buried Treasure and A Treasure You Can Search For
In the 1600s, a galleon ship, Nuestra Senora de Atocha, was caught in a hurricane off the coast of Key West. Supposedly, this one held an enormous cargo of gold, silver and gems. The original captain’s manifest claimed coins of different values, emeralds, boxes of gold and silver bars.

23 - Bookworm Lisa - How to Make Your Own Treasure Map
1) Think about what you want on the map. Lucky for James Benedict, his photographic memory came in handy when it came time to recall the directions to the island called Neverland...

24 - The Written Adventure - Real Life Paratey Adventure (Geocaching)
Geocaching is defined as the recreational activity of hunting for and finding a hidden object by means of GPS coordinates posted on a website, i.e. modern day treasure hunting. Honestly, the definition doesn’t begin to describe the fun and excitement involved.

25 - Dalene's Book Reviews - Review
"I enjoyed reading this book, the author took on Peter Pan and does a good job with this rewrite of a classic story. The characters are well developed and written."

Beck's Valley Books - Interview
Is there anything you don't like about being an author?
Talking about myself ;) That’s not to say I don’t enjoy discussing Second on the Right and the characters in the story. I welcome any questions, comments or discussion involving my novel. But questions about myself? Ugh.

About Elizabeth Los

I began writing fan fiction short stories in 2010 as means of escape. Every night, after ten hours of work and once the children were finally tucked in bed, for the fifth time, I would sit at my laptop and let my imagination flow through my fingers. Typing over eighty words per minute, my stories quickly began to form from novellas into full length novels. I used writing as my therapy, my release for stress.
