Book Blitz {Excerpt & Giveaway} Losing Track by Trisha Wolfe

Losing Track (Living Heartwood #2)
Release Date: 10/15/14

Summary from Goodreads:
Sometimes you have to lose your way before finding the right track.

The roar of a bike engine. The vibration between her thighs. The feel of cool darkness kissing her skin as she coasts along twisty back roads at night—Melody Lachlan lives for these things. Ever since Mel and her best friend Darla escaped their small, backwoods town, they’ve traveled the countryside in search of fast rides, tatted bikers, and good times.

A self-proclaimed poet and lover of all things free, Mel views her life as one long bike ride—with pit stops along the way to numb the pain. But she never saw herself as a junkie. Party as hard as you ride. That’s her motto…until a tragic night steals her soul. Then she’s forced to delve below the surface, to where her demons rage.

When she meets recovered drug addict Boone Randall, she’s more likely to deck him than kiss his dimple-adorable face. She doesn’t want his help; doesn’t want to own up to her part in that night. She just wants to do her time and keep her promise to her friend. Yet Boone challenges Mel, and soon she doesn’t mind sharing the road. Only when Boone’s own secret demons threaten their newfound, fragile security, Mel’s course becomes rocky, and she must decide if letting her well-worn track marks fade is worth finding a new path.

Told from Dual point of view from Melody and Boone, this is a New Adult Contemporary Romance intended for readers seventeen years of age and older.

Excerpt 3: Boone

The look she’s giving me nearly does me in, though. Almost makes me say fuck it and grab her, just to end the torment. I’m a livewire, strung taut and snapping, dying to press her body against mine. Just to get some relief.

Then, “You’ll never face a harder challenge.” Her words sink into me, to the marrow. She releases me from her penetrating gaze, and says over her shoulder as she begins to swim away, “Let’s leave it at that.”

And she’s right. Again. I don’t need this shit. I was wrong that first night when I approached her, when I let her gravity pull me in. I’m sure there’s a plethora of guys in orbit out there now, who she keeps all at bay. Waiting for the second she crooks her finger at them.

I have to admit, when I first saw her, I was tempted by that pouty mouth. The big dark eyes, gorgeous against her creamy skin. Layers of burgundy and black hair swept up into a messy pony tail, brushing her soft shoulders. Petite, tight body with curves in all the right places…begging to be explored. She looked so mouthwateringly untouchable. Tough as nails yet soft and tender.

But it was more than that. She sung, over the crowd, over the chaos, her pain. She wears it like a shield of impenetrable armor. Literally has it tattooed on her body. It called out, whether it wanted to be heard or not, recognized or not, and my pain answered in reply. Physical attraction; anyone can feel it. Anyone can act on it. But that soul deep cry—that raw harmony that plays on a frequency too low to hear—that’s what caught my attention. Ensnared me.

Only I was too oblivious at first to acknowledge it for what it was.

There wouldn’t be any escape with this girl. Not the kind I’m craving.

“Get your ass out, guy,” she shouts from the bank. “Hustle up. I have to get back before I’m assumed AWOL.”

Then there’s that: messing around with a user. It’d be safer for me to stick my hand right into a fire. Because this proverbial one is going to hurt a lot more.

That thought helps the rock hard boner tenting my boxers to wilt, and I can move out of the water. But dammit, as soon as I’m solid in my choice, mentally berating myself for almost getting mixed up with another user…she bends over to grab her pants.

She’s wearing these cream and pink, half ass cheek covering things. Not thongs—I know what to call those. But they’re sexy as hell. Lace trims enough of her round ass to hide most of it, but reveals all the sexiness. And I can’t help myself; I stare. Stare hard.

I can just glimpse the shape of her lips through the material. Imagine her clit…wet from the water…slippery and warm.

My cock starts to throb painfully. Fuck. I’m headed right back to the water when she outs me. “Damn, baby. Is that for me?” She winks, a playful smile pulling at her mouth, and my face heats.

I am a fucking glutton for punishment. Any other girl would have been a safer choice.

I run a hand through my hair, purposely avoiding looking down at my dick. “I’m a man, not a saint.”
A sly half-smile sneaks onto her face. “Well, it’s about time.”

Excerpt

The stench hung heavy in the air. There was no other smell in the world quite like it. First came the stink of grease fires from the wall torches, the heavy black smoke that roiled through the air like a foul fog. Then a moldering, musty base layer came to the senses. It reeked of decay and seeping moisture that grew black mold on every surface. The mold clung on the rough-cut rocks lining the dungeon tunnels. It covered the thick iron bars holding the prisoners in place. It even grew on the tattered rags covering the miserable creatures in the cells and likely on their skin as well. That final smell overlay the symphony of stink.

The Creach prisoners.

Werewolves, harpies, blind mad-worms, blinderwursts, fangpiercers, even some demons held with the special pure iron chains required to keep them in place. Many of these creatures were pungent under the best circumstances, but locked in the deepest dungeon underground, sometimes for decades, they took on an odor so ripe, so awful, that visitors to the dungeon often had to hold their breath to enter. Even then, the smell would make their eyes sting and well with tears. Immediately after leaving the dungeon, visitors were allowed a bath or a shower in the castle. As they washed the stench from their bodies, they would feel an overwhelming sense of thanks that they were not a prisoner wallowing in the horrifying conditions they’d just witnessed.

No one, human or Creach, wanted to be a prisoner in the dungeons of Ren Lucre. Far away, at the end of one of the long, twisting corridors, came the creak of a massive door opening. The prisoners stirred at the sound. Their reactions mirrored how long they had been in their cells.

The newer arrivals looked up with expectation, still hopeful their punishment was going to be short and that someone was coming to tell them their nightmare was over.

Those who had been there longer knew that hope was useless in this dark place. They simply cowered farther into whatever dark corner they could find in their cell, desperate not to be noticed by the Master.

Then there were those who had been there the longest. They simply looked up with mild interest, knowing that nothing they did made any difference. Their spirits were broken. Worse, they knew this to be the dark truth, and they simply didn’t care.

One single prisoner reacted in none of these ways. He simply stood, and the rags that had once been his clothes hung on his bony frame. Unbroken by years of starvation and torture, he still squared his shoulders in the direction of the sound and raised his chin, his eyes glistening in the torchlight with defiance. What he saw would have brought a normal man to his knees, but this man was no more normal than the monster approaching.

Ren Lucre, the five hundred year old vampire, filled the hallway as he strode through it, his cloak billowing behind him as he rushed past the stinking cells. His pale, narrow face looked pinched and concerned. His blood-red lip pursed in a straight line, and his eyes glowered like embers in a fire that might at any time combust into new flame.

He came to the thick set of bars that held the proud man, stopped, and stared him down.

“Well, if it isn’t the Lord of the Creach,” the man said. Even though his voice was course and weak, he still managed an edge of bitter sarcasm. “You look like you’re having a bad day.” The man spat on the floor. “Good.”

Blog Tour {Excerpt & Giveaway} Two Degrees Closer to Hell by David Fingerman

Title- Two Degrees Closer to Hell
By- David Fingerman

Blurb-
Speculative fiction writer, David Fingerman, is back with a series of short stories guaranteed to curl your toes and raise your hair. If you're looking for some quick thrills, let these stories take you on a ride that will bring you two degrees closer to Hell.

From the short story 'The Devil Takes a Vacation'

Cries of anguish bounced off a blood-and-gut-smeared hallway as two demons forcefully escorted a kicking and screaming Clarence Hogswell. This was going to be his first personal face-to-face with Master.

The royalty chamber seemed an endless cavern, now virtually empty. Clarence hadn’t seen it since being denied the Pearly Gates all those years ago. At that time, multitudes of damned souls filled the room and cowered, but at the same time cheered Great Satan. Ironically, many prayed to God for Satan’s favor.

Hollow footsteps echoed throughout the hall as the demons led Clarence past the thousands of bones and carcasses that littered the floor. Finally he was in front of the great stage, and the two guards threw him to the ground.

“Hogswell!” the voice boomed.

The self-proclaimed King of Kings rose from his throne, leaned down and picked Clarence up, grasping the trembling man’s head in a taloned hand.

“No time to mince words, Hogswell, I know you’re wondering why I summoned you, so I’ll get right to the point. It’s been over two centuries and I’ve decided to take a short vacation. I’m getting burned out.” Beelzebub waited for a reaction. When he got none, he dropped Clarence in a heap. “Humor has always been lost on you, Hogswell. Anyway, for the next few years, or whenever I feel like coming back, I’m leaving you in charge of Hell.”
Fear and shock wrapped itself around Clarence like linen strips around a mummy. He couldn’t have heard right. Out of all the great world leaders throughout time, now residing here in splendor, there was no way Satan would leave a timid bumbler in charge of anything, let alone all of Hell

“But your Glorious Eminence…” Clarence cowed.

The Greatest of Greats sneezed. Flames shot from his nostrils, incinerating one of the demon escorts. Little balls of fire dripped from his nose and sizzled on the ground as he continued. “No need to thank me, my boy. I’m sure you’ll do just fine.”

Clarence felt convinced this was just one more in a long line of cruel jokes. But never before had he been the butt of a joke from the top leader himself.

“But your Grand Inquisitor, I’m sure there must be others more worthy than myself.”

Satan’s pupils glowed red and expanded over his entire eyeballs. Steam escaped from his pores and his hair ignited in blue flame. “Of course there are, you stupid little turd!”

Lucifer’s aura pushed the tiny man tumbling down the great hall. The Sultan of Sulfur then hurled a burning spear with pinpoint accuracy. As Clarence prepared himself for the torturous pain, the spear stopped an inch from his face, then turned and struck the other demon. Both the spear and the demon evaporated.

“Now, now, my boy.” The Prince of Darkness appeared, standing over Clarence, His voice sounded almost meditative. “To be perfectly honest, your work here has been, well, quite disappointing to say the least.” He lifted Clarence up onto his feet. “Helping your comrades, always eager to please – you’ve been told hundreds of times that kind of behavior will not be tolerated. That’s why I’ve been telling your supervisors to lean on you. We don’t need, nor do we want, any goody-two-shoes.” The King of Lies’ voice turned from calm to threatening. “I know what you’ve been trying to do, but repent all you want, it won’t work. You’re here to stay.”

Clarence shivered as he remembered the various tortures he’d endured. Being thrown into the lava pits, drawn and quartered, and the worst, being de-boned and left to wriggle like a worm until the supervisor shoved the bones back in. It took weeks for Clarence to rearrange them so each bone went to its proper place – and he had to do it on his own time.

“I’ve decided it’s time for you to prove yourself,” The Evil One continued. “Show some initiative, like when you were alive. Did you show any compassion for all of those people you swindled?  That poor widow who invested her life savings into your care?  How about all of those families that were put out on the street after you conned them out of thousands? Of course not! You were a leader then, a thinker. That’s why you’re here.”

Clarence looked down at his feet as shame spread throughout his body. The Devil sensed the guilty conscience and grabbed him by the throat, lifting him off the floor so they were eye-to-eye.

“Listen you little butt-hair. A guilty conscience means squat around here.” Phlegm sprayed from Satan’s mouth, burning like acid through Clarence’s flesh.

Just as quickly as his temper flared, the Evilest of Evils morphed into the gentleman’s gentleman. “Now, I’ve already sent out the memo explaining that you’re in charge. I’ve let it be known that if anybody gives you problems, they will be dealt with accordingly when I return. I don’t think there’s anything else. Oh, one last thing. You’ve got a great deal of responsibility now. Have fun with it.” A sneer crept across Satan’s face. “If you do well, I’ll reward you greatly. Screw up, well, you’ve only been here fifty-three years. You’ll remember those years as heaven compared to what you will go through for the rest of eternity.”

Hogswell froze as he watched the Devil turn and walk away.

“Oh yeah, and one more thing.” Satan turned back around. “Stay off the throne. You don’t know how long it took to make that cushion fit just right.”

With that, Lucifer began to spin. Faster and faster he went until he burst into flames and disappeared.

Teaser Tuesday ~ A Place Beyond by Laura Howard

Teaser Tuesday

Ethan raised himself up on his elbow and pressed his finger into the space between my eyebrows.

“I wish I could make this go away,” he said softly.

“Don’t tell me I have wrinkles,” I said, my lame attempt at a joke making him crack a little smile.

“No,” he said, dragging his finger lightly down my cheek. “In fact, you couldn’t be more beautiful.”

I just laughed, I didn’t have anything even resembling a witty comeback in me.

“You are,” he continued. “It’s killing me that I can’t take all this pain away from you.”

He ducked his head for a second before meeting my eyes again. “I would do anything to make it easier for you, you know.”

I swallowed and stared at his earnest expression, overcome by his words. “I know you would.”

Ethan ran his hand through my hair. “Good.”

I twisted to face him, tentatively bringing my hands up to his shoulders. “I’m really glad you’re here.”

His lashes lowered, hiding his eyes. I smoothed my fingers up his neck and pulled him to me, kissing him softly.

He returned the kiss and there was something so tender about the way he held my face in his hands. Like I was precious.

About Laura

Laura Howard lives in New Hampshire with her husband and four children. Her obsession with books began at the age of 6 when she got her first library card. Nancy Drew, Sweet Valley High and other girly novels were routinely devoured in single sittings. Books took a backseat to diapers when she had her first child. It wasn’t until the release of a little novel called Twilight, 8 years later, that she rediscovered her love of fiction. Soon after, her own characters began to make themselves known. The Forgotten Ones is her first published novel.
