Release Day Book Blitz {Excerpt & Giveaway} The Book of Ivy by Amy Engel

The Book of Ivy (The Book of Ivy #1)
by Amy Engel
Release Date: 11/04/14
Entangled Teen

Summary from Goodreads:
After a brutal nuclear war, the United States was left decimated. A small group of survivors eventually banded together, but only after more conflict over which family would govern the new nation. The Westfalls lost. Fifty years later, peace and control are maintained by marrying the daughters of the losing side to the sons of the winning group in a yearly ritual.

This year, it is my turn.

My name is Ivy Westfall, and my mission is simple: to kill the president’s son—my soon-to-be husband—and restore the Westfall family to power.

But Bishop Lattimer is either a very skilled actor or he’s not the cruel, heartless boy my family warned me to expect. He might even be the one person in this world who truly understands me. But there is no escape from my fate. I am the only one who can restore the Westfall legacy.

Because Bishop must die. And I must be the one to kill him…

Excerpt

[Bishop] lets out a frustrated sigh. “You don’t…you don’t have to be any certain way with me, Ivy. I don’t expect anything. I want you to be yourself.” He leans back and scrubs at his face with one hand. He sounds tired. “I just want to know who you are.”

“Okay,” I say, while my brain searches for all the hidden meanings behind his words, trying to figure out what it is he really wants. Because it seems impossible that he is coming into this relationship without an agenda of his own. “What do you want to know?”

Bishop leans forward again and stares at me. “Everything,” he says quietly, and my stomach clenches. “Anything.”

I know I have to tell him something, but I need to be careful. And even beyond the worries about all the secrets I hold, there is the nagging feeling that I’m not even sure who I am, apart from my family. For most of my life, I was the spare daughter, the one who would stay by my father’s side and work behind the scenes while Callie took center stage. And then, unexpectedly, two years ago, I became the focus. I’ve spent my whole life becoming the girl they need me to be, and I’ve shoved any parts that don’t fit so far down inside myself I don't think I can find them anymore. It is one more violation to have to reach down and offer myself up to this stranger.

I force my fingers to stop worrying the cushion thread. “Umm…I don’t know.” I take a deep breath. “I like strawberries. I wish I were a few inches shorter. I’m scared of snakes. I like to read. My mother died when I was a baby.” I say the words fast, as if the sheer speed at which I spit them out will render them less personal, although they are hardly deep, dark secrets. I wonder if he knows what his father did to my family? How he took away my mother—had her killed—to remind us who has the power. Just thinking about it makes heat rush into my cheeks, my heart thundering against my ribs. I should stop, but instead, I look up at him, hold his eyes. “I don’t like the things your father does.” Callie may be the fiercer one, but there is a recklessness in me that cannot be contained. “Is that what you wanted to know?”

The expression on Bishop’s face doesn’t change, his eyes still and calm. “It’s a start,” he says eventually.

SUMMARY

Bloodlines-3D-Paperback-eReader

Following the acclaimed debut of The Enemy Inside and its sequel, Broken, comes the stunning conclusion to the ‘Edge of Darkness’ series by investigative journalist Vanessa Skye, Blood Lines.

Detective Alicia “Berg” Raymond is lying. She’s lying to the Chicago Police Department, to her boyfriend, Captain Jay O’Loughlin, but most of all, she’s lying to herself—about her past, her future, and her ongoing addiction.

As Berg investigates a series of brutal rapes and sinks under an ever-increasing caseload, she finds herself juggling every aspect of her life—finding justice for victims of crime, keeping her own sordid past buried from her colleagues, struggling with blackmail that threatens to push her over the edge, and protecting her lover from the details of all of it.

Wrapping her damaged head around living in a state of domestic bliss she’s certain she doesn’t deserve, Berg is driven by the need for justice and a determination to stop a rapist before any more innocent lives are ravaged.

But when enemies from the past threaten her present, she is once again vulnerable to the demons that have plagued her every day of her life.

It’s only a matter of time before her lies unravel and the fairy tale she’s finally started believing implodes . . . but the biggest threat of all, as it turns out, is her very own bloodline.

Can she save herself, and the casualties of crime, from the lurking darkness waiting to strike, or will her own mistakes drag her under—this time for good?

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

vskye

Vanessa Skye has always had a love of words and spent her school years writing poetry, speeches, and fictional essays.

After completing a Bachelor of Arts in print journalism and studying psychology at Charles Sturt University, Vanessa got a job at Australia's largest publisher of regional and agricultural news and information, Rural Press, where she worked as a journalist in the central west of New South Wales for four years.

Thousands of stories later, Vanessa decided to move back to Sydney and try her hand at public relations while studying for a master’s degree in communication.

Skip forward a few years and Vanessa was once again joyfully studying various psychology subjects while managing a Sydney public relations firm. Enthralled with examining the motivations behind people’s actions, Vanessa realized what she really wanted to do in life was combine her love of words with her fascination for human behavior.

So Vanessa quit public relations to begin the significantly more impoverished life of a professional writer.

Inspired by a recurring dream, Vanessa wrote her crime fiction debut, The Enemy Inside, which challenges the concept of justice, asks if the need for vengeance sometimes justifies murder, and explores whether you can ever heal from childhood abuse. Broken is her second book in this series. In her spare time, Vanessa wrote a short story, The Piece, which was published in February 2012, by Dark Prints Press as a part of the 'One That Got Away' dark fiction anthology. Vanessa now works as a freelance writer, lives in Sydney’s northern beaches, and tries to immerse herself in salt water at least once a day.

Cover Reveal {Giveaway} Uriel's Fall by Loralie Hall

Uriel's Fall
Ubiquity, Book 1
By- Loralie Hall
Genre- Urban Fantasy

Ronnie has the job any entry-level angel or demon would sell their soul for—she’s a retrieval analyst for the largest search engine in the world. Ubiquity is a joint initiative between heaven and hell. Because what better way to track all of humanity’s secrets, both good and bad, than direct access to their web browsing habits?

She might appreciate the position a little more if a) she could remember anything about her life before she started working at Ubiquity, b) the damned voice in her head would just shut up already, and c) her boss weren’t a complete control freak.

As she searches for solutions to the first two issues, and hopes the third will work itself out in performance reviews, she uncovers more petty backstabbing than an episode of Real Housewives, and a conspiracy as old as Lucifer’s descent from heaven. On top of all that, if she forgets the cover sheet on her TPS report one more time, she’s absolutely going on final written warning.

Now Ronnie’s struggling to keep her sanity and job, while stopping the voice in her head from stealing her life. She almost misses the boredom of retrieval analysis at Ubiquity.

Almost.

Blog Tour {Excerpt & Giveaway} Peerless by Victoria Escobar

Peerless
By- Victoria Escobar
Genre- NA Urban Fantasy

Without the touch of time affecting her, Tiranna has spent the last two thousand years protecting dangerous artifacts that have the potential to destroy the world. Her distinctive magic makes her one of the most powerful, and at times, one of the most feared.

When she finds a demonic artifact that shouldn't exist, she fears the return of a long-forgotten demon that has a single goal: create his version of Hell on earth. The world she spent her life protecting, could be lost.

Time never concerned her before, but now it's her worst enemy. Only she has the power to destroy the demon masquerading as a black witch. All she has to do is figure out how.

And now an Excerpt from Peerless:

Tiranna scanned the shop as she followed him to the counter. Stock had rotated since the last time she had been in, but the feel of the place hadn't changed. It was still cheerful and ruthlessly clean.

She reached into her pocket, pulled out the velvet wrapped package, and dropped it careless on the counter with a muffled clank. She gave him a sheepish smile, "I broke it."

Fin carefully untied it then winced as he picked up a large cog from the pieces. He sighed as he dropped the piece back into the pile. Then he pulled a cloth out of his pocket and began to polish his spectacles–a habit she knew when he was irritated.

"What was it?" he asked when he replaced his glasses and studied the pieces closer.
"Pocket watch," Tiranna replied smiling as he winced again.

"Anything obvious missing?"

"Black opal disc.” She answered as she sat herself in the stool next to the counter.

He hummed but didn't ask. The rest of what he was saying buzzed in her ears. Sitting down had been a mistake. Her mind and body had taken the gesture as an invitation to rest and shut down. The fatigue that stormed her was almost brutally painful. Fingers snapped in front of her nose and jolted her back to awareness.

The snapping fingers belonged to Fran, who had apparently come out of the back while she had taken her short jaunt through the fields of exhaustion. Fran’s hair was tucked under a schoolboy hat, and her eyes swirled blue with her concern. She was slightly shorter than her husband but no less skilled.

"What have you done?" Fran asked directly not as dismissive as her husband towards Tiranna's activities.

"Fixed a demon stone so the demon would no longer leak through without a conjurer."
Fran studied Tiranna's face a long moment. "You've drained yourself practically dry. Come on then, let's see what I can do for you."

Tiranna let Fran pull her to her feet then addressed Fin. "How long to fix the watch?"
He waved a hand at her. "I'll call you when it's ready."

Tiranna nodded and let Fran lead her through the doorway and down a short hall into the kitchen area with eat in table and chairs. She dropped into one of the chairs and folded her arms on the table to rest her head there. Fran clucked her tongue and began bustling around the small room.

She wasn’t asleep, but she wasn’t quite awake either. Tiranna floated in a foggy half world of wakefulness while Fran busied herself. It wasn’t a bad place to be, especially when she knew she was as safe in Fran’s kitchen as she would be in any of the great elven courts.

She jolted upright when Fran pinched her arm hard. Tiranna stared until her eyes refocused on the waking world. Fran was holding a steaming cup out to her.

“Drink this. It should give you enough boost to get home and into bed. I’d rather dump you in a guest bed upstairs, but you’re too tall.” She gave a motherly smile.

Tiranna sniffed the liquid and because Fran watched like a hawk, she gulped down the liquid. It burned fire in her veins and that fire burned away a good portion of the fatigue.

“And, don’t think Lord Nathryn won’t hear about this.” She pulled Tiranna to her feet, “Now, let’s get you home.”

Launch for the MISTLETOE KISSES TOUR for Christmas, Actually by Anna Adams, Anna J. Stewart, and Melinda Curtis {Giveaway}

A themed tour through Prism Book Tours.

Welcome to the Launch for the MISTLETOE KISSES TOUR for
Christmas, Actually
Three Harlequin Heartwarming novellas
By Anna Adams, Anna J. Stewart, and Melinda Curtis

Introducing the Three Stories in Christmas, Actually

The Christmas Gift by Anna Adams

This anthology was born one night in January when Melinda Curtis and Anna J. Stewart and I (Anna Adams) were chatting on Skype, and Melinda suggested a holiday anthology. From there we went to setting, and then to the kind of stories we wanted to write. Christmas Town, Maine came to life and the Banning siblings began living. I hope readers will be moved as I am by Jack and Sophie’s story.

Sophie Palmer was confused when the pregnancy test came back positive, but one thing she knew—she already loved her unborn child. She didn’t expect former Army surgeon, Jack Banning to break all contact with them. He’s promised financial support, but he wants no other contact with her or their coming child.

He must have a reason. She’d known him and loved him for two years. At Christmas, she follows him to Maine to tell him she’s putting his name on the birth certificate.

She no longer loves him. He’s destroyed those feelings, and she will never give their daughter a reason to believe she can expect more than her father’s name, but Sophie can’t forget the soldier who lived by the code of “Leave no man behind,” the doctor who’s cared more for his patients than himself, the man who didn’t know how to be dishonorable.

Fatherless herself, Sophie doesn’t care about the financials. She’ll take care of her own, but she needs to understand why Jack’s become an impossible-to-love stranger.

The Christmas Wish by Anna J. Stewart

For as long as I've been writing, I never thought I'd ever write a novella. I'm a novel length kinda girl--I just write long books; sometimes very, very long. But when my friend (and writing Yoda) Melinda Curtis proposed the idea of interconnected novellas featuring a set of siblings, I couldn't say no. Especially not when she, Anna Adams and I decided to make it a holiday themed anthology. There's something magical about the holiday season, and writing Callie and Dean's story was a true pleasure. In all honesty, it was also the easiest thing I've ever written; probably because this story comes straight from my heart.

When Callie Banning's student declares war on Christmas, it's up to her to teach the little girl--and her widowed father--to believe again.

Normally when I start a story, the heroine is first to pop into my head. This time around, Dean Galloway entered the scene first. I could see him so clearly, shoulder length blonde hair, the brown leather jacket, the haunted twinkle in his eye as he struggled to raise his little girl on his own. And he came with a camera. No idea why, he just arrived that way. Like a gift. There's something incredibly appealing to me (and hopefully to readers) about a father who is so in love with his child he'll do anything--even move them all across the country--to keep them happy. Adding a tinge of grief to their story and Callie Banning was just the healing effect they'd been looking for. There are people who just fit from the moment they meet; not necessarily that clichéd "you complete me" fit, but that something special that makes life and love all that more exciting. The Christmas Wish is more than about celebrating the holiday season and rediscovering the magic those months bring--it's about finding where one truly belongs, both in home and heart. So come on, welcome to Christmas Town, Maine and meet the Banning siblings, who have a very special New Year coming their way.

The Christmas Date by Melinda Curtis

The Christmas Date is the third novella in Christmas, Actually – three holiday stories about three siblings living in Christmas Town, Maine, where tradition has it that a kiss on Christmas Eve in the town square gazebo will lead to wedding bells in the new year!

At a critique session, the Annas and I were talking about how we loved holiday stories. It was a natural progression to creating our own special town with heartwarming traditions.

In The Christmas Date, Gina Vernay was in an accident as a child and has a scar down her right cheek. Since then, Gina has always sat on the sidelines, lacking the self-confidence to shine. Wanting what many of her friends have – love, a family – Gina signs up for an online dating account. But her picture doesn’t show her scar. And she’s always too busy running The Tea Cup in Christmas Town to meet anyone, much less a man to share a kiss under the mistletoe in the town’s gazebo. But when one persistent on-line suitor arranges to meet her on Christmas Eve, Gina’s life turns upside down.

Will your heart be warmed by a sweet kiss under the mistletoe this year?

About the Authors

Photo 34
Anna Adams wrote her first romance in wet sand. The Atlantic Ocean washed it away, but Anna kept going. Her stories are of love, like the proverbial stone in a lake, making ripples that spread and contract and involve. From Iceland to Hawaii, and points in between, Anna and her own hero share with children and family and friends who’ve become family. All this living and loving gives Anna plenty of fodder for stories of love set in real life. Come along and live them with her!

Anna J. Stewart can't remember a time she didn't have a book in her hand or a story in her head and credits her mother never saying no to a book for turning her into a writer. Anna lives in Northern California with an overly attentive cat named Snickers and is happiest when setting her heroes and heroines on their road to happily ever after amidst family, fun and laughter.

Melinda Curtis
Melinda Curtis grew up on an isolated sheep ranch, where mountain lions had been seen and yet she roamed unaccompanied. Being a rather optimistic, clueless of danger, sort she took to playing "what if" games that led her to become an author. She spends days trying to figure out new ways to say "He made her heart pound." That might sound boring, but the challenge keeps her mentally ahead of her 3 kids and college sweetheart husband.

Kicked to the Curb
By Joanna Campbell Slan
Series: (Book #2 in the Cara Mia Delgatto Mystery Series)

The media event that Cara plans turns nasty when reporter Kathy Simmons threatens to share unsavory details from the shopkeeper’s past. Things get really dicey when Kathy mysteriously disappears. Is It a Hobby or an Obsession?
By Joanna Campbell Slan

Ever since I was a little girl, I’ve been totally consumed by making other worlds. Back then, I built fairy houses in the exposed roots of a nearby tree. Later, I sank a big pickle jar into the ground and put small plants all around it. Using all my allowance, I bought minnows and put them into the jar, so that I “stocked” my own pond. This worked beautifully until a neighbor’s cat noticed the easy prey.

These days I’m into dollhouses, big time. For several years, I’ve wanted to build a Halloween mansion, but I never managed to get started in time. But this August, when a miniature retailer had a sale on house kits, I used the discount and scored one for less than $35. The challenge was then how to fill the rooms without breaking the bank.

I decided to make all the furniture myself. Some pieces were originally boxes. Yep, boxes. Others I created from wood. One table has legs made from wooden clothes pins. The sofa, well, I blush to tell you that I used mini pads for padding. They were perfect because they already have an adhesive backing! I stacked corrugated cardboard pieces together make the sofa’s frame.

As my own project progressed, I decided to add a miniaturist to my mystery series. I mean, why not use what I was learning? I didn’t want all that good research to go to waste.

And so, Honora McAfee was “born” as a character in my new book, Kicked to the Curb. She’s an older lady, with a face like an apple-head doll, and she’s partial to hats. Honora “got into” dollhouses by buying one for her daughter EveLynn, who has Asperger’s Syndrome. The hope was that EveLynn would better relate to people after playing with miniatures. That didn’t happen, but Honora found a wonderful and therapeutic release for the stress and grief of a difficult child.

I’m not sure that it’s fair to say that I was bitten by the miniatures’ bug. It’s more like I was born with a love of small things. For a lot of people, miniatures are a hobby. For me, they seem to be an obsession.
