Adelaide Scott is a 25-year-old relationship advice columnist for Stunning! Magazine. Her new boyfriend, Jordan Johnson, is a renowned photographer for Sports Unlimited. Their relationship seems perfect, until his ex-girlfriend confronts them at a bar – and accuses Jordan of raping her, turning their world upside down.

It doesn’t help that her best friend and editor, Kiersten Sharp, sees rape as a black-and-white issue, with no shades of doubt. Addie is about to discover that the truth – in all its forms – is complicated, and not at all what she expects.

“So I met with another one of Jordan’s exes today.”

“Oh, that’s right. So is JJ still not a rapist?”

Talk about a loaded question. Holding my wine glass by the stem, I spin it on my knee, contemplating how to answer. “Long story short, he tried some kinky things she didn’t like, so she asked him to stop, and he likened it to a second-grader pulling a girl’s hair to tell her he likes her.”

Kiersten’s eyes bulged as she held her glass close to her lips, as if anticipating shocking news that would require an emergency pump of alcohol to face. “That’s it?”

“Uh, yup. That’s what she said.”

That’s what she said. Ha, ha.

“Wow.” Kiersten sets the glass roughly on the table, causing the Merlot inside to vehemently swish. “Jordan’s dated some pretty weird women, if that’s their definition of assault.”

“Well remember, they weren’t the ones who accused him. Only Samantha did.”

“Right. Why don’t you just forget the whole ‘interview’ thing and get the information you want straight from the horse’s mouth? Quit wasting your time with his exes and just talk to Samantha already.”

I had considered doing that. Funny how Jordan didn’t recommend I do that in the first place. Unless she’s just too volatile, too fragile to confront. Not to mention, I could never use a fake identity with her. She’d know exactly who I am and what I’d want from her.

“Maybe I will later,” I say. “This is still worthwhile, though. I’m too intrigued to give up now, especially when there are still two more names left. I’m halfway done already.”

Kier shakes her head. “Allow me to give you my unsolicited opinion, since I’m your best friend. You aren’t getting anything useful from them. At all. They sound like lonely, jilted women who saw an opportunity to dress up the story of their failed relationships to get sympathy, and you know what? It’s working. Don’t you see? Maybe they’ve seen through your little charade and are just playing you.”

“I don’t think that’s what–”

“They’re cobbling together stories to put doubts in your head so you’ll dump Jordan! That’s what they want! They hate him for not wanting to get serious, so this is their payback. Not the best kind that I’ve seen, but still ruthless in its own way.”

“And what could they possibly have to gain from this? Wouldn’t falsely accusing someone only come back to bite them in the ass?”

Kiersten seems to consider this. “You would think. But who says Jordan dates smart women?”

It only took a few seconds to realize her mistake. “Oh, shit, Addie, I didn’t mean…”

“You meant to say that Jordan only dated bimbos before he met me,” I clarify for her. “Thanks to me he’s raising his standards.”

“Exactly what I meant. Cheers?”

We clink our glasses.

Tom had pulled a chair to the front of the room and climbed onto it. It was something he’d done before. It helped him to be seen by as many of the kids under his command and protection as possible. Well, seen and heard.

He said loudly, “She’s been plannin’ this for at least a month, scheduling three different police events all around City Hall, all around us, and all for this evening. The media’s been callin’ ‘em ‘urban peace-keeping simulations’ or ‘training exercises.’ The Queen ain’t been settin’ them up herself, of course. Lilith Cavanaugh’s dead as far as the world’s concerned. She jumped out her sixth-floor office window almost two months ago.” He managed a grin. “I know, ‘cause I was there.”

That actually earned him some laughs and applause.

Standing nearby, Helene and I swapped glances. We were thinking the same thing: those were likely to be the last laughs he got today.

I flexed my right hand. It felt good. The Anchor Shard had done its job.

I glanced over at Sharyn. She’d been healed up too, and now stood at her brother’s side—though, from her expression, I could tell that, right now, she wanted to be somewhere else, with someone else.

The only Undertaker who wasn’t here.

The chief continued, “But she’s got cronies positioned in just the right spots in city government, and they’ve been settin’ this up. Just today, she brought in two new Corpses to be co-police chiefs, since the last one got iced by Helene.”

A few more cheers and applause. Helene blushed uncomfortably.

Tom said, “Both these chiefs are somethin’ called ‘Specials,’ a particular breed o’ Malum that’s hardwired for combat. They’re tough. Very tough. But they ain’t unbeatable. Will already managed to waste one, the one called Parker, this afternoon at the Philly Water Works.”

Still more cheers. I ignored them. I hadn’t taken out Parker.

Dillin had.

“But that still leaves Cole, who’s gonna be commandin’ the Malum attack. Undertakers, they’ve gathered up at each of Haven’s entrances … and our best guess puts their numbers at close to fifteen hundred. They’ve already closed ranks and sealed off the exits, trapping us in here.”

No applause this time. No laughter. Just graveyard silence.

“They’ve found us,” the chief said. “It don’t matter how. Cavanaugh’s been biding her time, waitin’ for the right moment to hit us. Well, that moment’s here, ‘cause school just got out. All through the area, the last middle schools’ve shut down for the summer. So every Schooler, more’n seventy of them, are back home. ‘Course, in a week’s time, some of y’all would’ve gone back out, taking up spots in summer camps and such, always on the lookout for more Seers. But for now, for this tiny window, all of us … all of us … are here. And the Queen of the Dead knows it.

“Bottom line, Undertakers. She’s comin’ for us. Tonight.”

ABOUT PRETTY DARK SACRIFICE

Title: Pretty Dark Sacrifice (Pretty Dark Nothing #2)
Publication date: July 28, 2015
Publisher: Month9Books, LLC.
Author: Heather L. Reid

It’s been five weeks, two days, and eight hours since the demons forced Quinn to throw herself into the raging river, since Aaron sacrificed himself to save her, since his body disappeared without a trace.

Everyone wants Quinn to move on, but she can’t, not after a spirit appears to her at Aaron's memorial, convincing her he’s still alive.

When a mysterious box materializes on the very spot Aaron disappeared, Quinn finds she’s at the center of an ancient prophesy of betrayal, revenge, and sacrifice that takes her to the depths of the underworld to face Lilith—Adam’s first wife.

If Quinn can stop Lilith from unleashing the demon horde Eve, trapped inside the box during the Battle of Eden millennia ago, she will save the human realm and free Aaron from an eternity in torment.

All it will cost is her blood.

Excerpt

The world around her growled and shook, violent and angry. Dark gashes, like thick fissures of ink, scarred the entire sepia landscape. Shadows swarmed from the cracks and crawled out from the abyss. Their essences pushed against hers, agitated, excited. She was a fly, the encroaching darkness like two hands converging to trap her inside. No time to think, she had to get back to her body, but ever-widening fissures ate away the land between her essence and her flesh.

Muscles tense, she ran. A tendril of fog exploded next to her. Dodge to the left, roll to the right. Instinct took over fear. Her body sat less than six feet away now. A crack opened in front of her and her essence leapt, landing an inch from the edge. Three feet. Almost there.

She glanced over her shoulder. A dozen or more demons, different from the ones she’d seen before, were closing in. She’d never seen anything so frightening. All the demons she’d met up until now looked like sweet kittens compared to these. With their approach, the box shivered and knocked against her, making it impossible to hold, and it tumbled from her pocket and across the ground. Quinn scrambled after it, catching it with the tips of her fingers, and she shoved it back into the pocket of her hoodie.

Another burst of speed, and she slid into home, but coming out of her body was much easier than going back in. Knee to knee, finger to finger, nose to nose, no matter what she did, her essence would not merge back into her flesh.

Please let me back in. Please.

The demons were closer now, mere feet from her and Marcus. Elongated bodies, roughly the size and shape of a Doberman Pinscher, were held up by ten long, spider-like legs. Red-needled spikes poked through bruise-colored, armored skin. Their tails curled above them like a scorpion’s, menacing and dangerous. Quinn didn’t want to think what kind of poison they might carry. She could sense their intent: they would attack, and she was too vulnerable with her guard down. Torn between fear and desire, she wrestled with the urge to flee, but where would she go?

Hundreds of faceted, red eyes gleamed around her. Giant pincers protruded below them, clicking and clacking as they scurried closer and closer.

EXCERPT

My heart speeds up. “You could get in a lot of trouble.”

John Ed shrugs as if he doesn’t care. I suppose he doesn’t. From what I’ve heard, he’s gotten into trouble before, trouble much worse than this.

“I could get in trouble,” I say.

“Forget I said anything.” John Ed releases the automatic locks and gives me a farewell salute. But I don’t want to leave. I don’t want this to be all—a favor, a polite goodbye. And as my heart beats ever faster, I think I hear my mother’s in it. Maybe this is what she wants for me. Maybe this is what she’s pulling me toward.

“There’s a land line inside,” I say. “That’s what we should use. Park in the cul de sac by the greenbelt.”

BOOK PLAYLIST

I play keyboards and sing backup vocals in a band called Shouts and Murmurs. There are always rehearsals and recording sessions going on in my house, so the book playlist is our debut album, “New East Berlin And Other Stories.” Listen to it here: https://shoutsandmurmurs.bandcamp.com/

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

Q: In your book, Gates’ mother dies and donates her body to science, and Gates goes on a quest to find it. Why did you write about organ donation?

A: It’s a topic that kept finding its way into my life. My friend Zane died unexpectedly and became an organ donor. Then, my friend Lauren, who had cystic fibrosis, died waiting for a lung transplant. And last, my former boyfriend Jonah, who had muscular dystrophy, died waiting for a heart transplant. So organ donation is something I was thinking a lot about while writing DESTROYING ANGEL.

Q: Were you good at English in school?

A: Yes, I was a relentless reader, so I absorbed a lot of information about grammar and spelling that way. I was very good at diagramming sentences. When I was in fifth grade, I went a year without watching TV, just to prove I could, and read some books that remain favorites today: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn and Gone with the Wind are among them.

Q: What does your writing process look like?

A: Well, I am a full-time journalist, so I write at work, during my lunch breaks and random down time. It just looks like me tapping at a Word document. Some days are busy, so I don’t get much time to write fiction. On those days, I try to write something, even if it’s just a sentence. Any day that I write, I consider a success, even if I only write for a couple minutes.

Q: You’re also a blogger at www.nowlistenmissy.com. Is it hard to write books and maintain a blog?

A: No. They’re very different types of writing, and I enjoy doing both. I find that the more I write, the more I can write, if that makes sense. It’s similar to how, if you start running, you’re able to run longer and longer the more you do it. Anything that motivates me to write is a good thing. Plus, I’ve made wonderful connections through blogging.

Q: What is the most useful thing you’ve found for marketing books?

A: Definitely writing guest posts for blogs and articles for online publications. Most let you link to your blog, and it’s a way to get your name out to a wide audience who might not otherwise have heard of you.

Q: Your protagonist gets in trouble with the police. Have you ever been arrested?

A: Yes, when I was 21 I spent a weekend in jail on felony possession charges. I went to court-ordered rehab, completed a year on probation, did community service, paid a lot of fines, and haven’t had any trouble with the law since. You could say I’ve been rehabilitated.
