CHAPTER 3 – ZOEY

I’m so grateful for my mother. We’re so much alike. When either of us have something complicated on our minds, we have to analyze it to death before taking any action. It makes her a great salesperson. It’s why I became a lawyer. Needless to say, getting a little exercise does make me feel better.

We complete the three-mile loop, and I quickly shoot Ty a text so he doesn’t worry that I’m not home yet. When I look up from my phone, my mom grips my shoulders. “Okay. I’m not sure if this is what you want to hear, but if you can't talk to Ty directly about this, I think you should get some couple’s counseling.”

My nose wrinkles almost uncontrollably. I’ve never been one to talk about my inner feelings. Even when I went through a long depression after I left Ty. Somehow, I’ve been able to muddle through. I look down at the sidewalk. Kick a crack with my toe.

“You’re not a fan.” Mom wraps her arms around me. Reluctantly, I hug her back.

“He has a therapist, Mom. A woman he’s been seeing for years. It’s how he turned his life around.”

“Zoey. No. Couple’s counseling is different. It gives you tools to communicate.”

I pull away. “I really don’t think we need it. I tell him everything. He can tell me anything. I think we’re good.”

She raises an eyebrow.

Point taken.

Mom sighs. “I love Ty. He’s part of our family. But, if you’re going to make this relationship work. If you’re going to build a life with him. If you’re going to marry him and have babies with him. You and I shouldn’t be having this conversation. You’re the one falling into old patterns, my darling daughter. Put your big-girl panties on and talk to your fiancΓ©.”

CHAPTER 10 – TY

TYSON

It’s all I can do not to faint when I watch Mike Pearson leadZoey to the edge of the patio. My butterfly is absolutely breathtaking. Angelic. She leans up and kisses her dad on the cheek. He helps her arrange her dress, and she takes his arm.

Then she looks up and looks directly into my eyes.

Mine.

Her radiant smile spreads across her face. I’ve never seen her so happy. So sure of herself. In this moment, I know, without any shadow of a doubt, that my purpose in life is to make sure she never loses that smile.

She floats toward me, and I’m smiling through happy tears. We’ve finally made it here. As she gets closer, I can’t help but reach out my hand to her. Mike swats it away good-naturedly and everyone laughs, including Zoey.

Carter, who was Internet-ordained specifically to marry us, proudly presides over our ceremony. It’s fitting, considering he not only was instrumental in breaking us up, but maneuvering it so we’d get back together. He’s a man with many regrets, fuck-ups and foibles, but he’s the closest thing I have to a father.

And I love him, for all his flaws.

Everything else falls away when Zoey and I say our vows. My eyes never leave hers and we clutch each other’s hands tightly. We exchange our rings and just like that, she’s my wife. I’m her husband. Our kiss sealing the deal is scorching. Soscorching, everyone hoots and whistles. The second we break apart, our closest friends and family surround us in one giant hug. I truly can’t recall ever feeling so completely comfortable in the moment at hand.

So this is what true peace feels like.

I like it.

CHAPTER 10 – TY

“I guess it’s our turn.” Mike and Olivia stand, holding hands. Mike smiles and points at me. “You. I can say now that you put a ring on my daughter, as a father who is highly protective of his only daughter, I was terrified when she brought you home that night. A long-haired, bad-boy rocker is not who you envision for your child.”

Olivia interrupts, “Except you won both of us over immediately. We loved you from the beginning, Ty, but the two of you were so young. We weren’t surprised when things fell apart, and I think we both knew that Carter meant well.”

“Watching Zoey suffer for all those years was tough,” Mike continues. “When you found each other again, there were still a few more bumps in the road, but Tyson? You proved yourself again and again. There’s no one else on earth we’d trust more with our precious Zoey. Welcome to our family.”

“Oh, Dad. Mom.” Zoey pops up and the three of them embrace. She waves me over and I join them.

That’s when it hits me. Holy shit, I have in-laws. I actually have parents. I can’t help but well up a bit. “Mike and Olivia, I’m so lucky to be part of your family.”

“Ty, you’re calling us Mom and Dad from now on, don’t argue.” Olivia kisses my cheek. “I’ve always wanted a son and look at what a handsome one I’ve acquired.”

Zoey nestles back into me as we both sit down, whispering in my ear, “I’m so fucking happy right now.”

Phoenix

There is a whirlwind of emotions rising from the depths inside of me. Every few seconds Bowie squeezes my hand, grounding me and bringing me back down to earth.

There are moments I want nothing more than to curl up in a ball and cry for all the circumstances we’ve been dealt, but I can’t let them win. There are other moments I want to grab the pocketknife from Ike’s sock and stab Melissa in her big brown eyes.

They didn’t have to take us, but there is some kind of ulteriormotive they have that we are not privy to. They are keeping their plans close to the chest.

Phoenix

The idea that there will be a day when I have to move past the thought of losing Cullen crushes me. He has been my everything since the moment he rescued me. And even though I’ve had wandering eyes since I woke up from the coma, it doesn’t mean I care any less about him. It doesn’t mean my love for him has wavered.

They say you never know what you have until it’s gone…

Breathing in deeply, I choke on the idea of never seeing him again. Never touching him again. He’s been my savior, my strength for so long it’s hard to envision what life would look like without him in it.

Francesca

There is a pit in my stomach when I awake. By my calculations, today is the day. I feel like a traitor waking up alongside Ike and acting as if everything is normal. Our version of normal that is.

“Hey,” Ike says softly, smoothing my hair out of my eyes. “Are you okay?”

I blink slowly, attempting to slow my rapidly beating heart. It’s so loud he may be able to hear it. “As okay as yesterday and the day before.”

He gives me a small smile and then his lips form into a tight line. He looks like he is fighting back tears.

“Hey,” I grab his face in my hands. “Life sucks but it sucks a little less with you.”

Cullen

Outside there is a handful of the walking dead. We work silently taking them out one by one. The skin on their bodies sags and they snap their mouths open and closed.

“Seventy-three,” Malachi says under his breath, but I don’t need to ask. Once he told me it was the number of biters he’d killed. I asked him what the point of counting was, and he told me it was because they were once human beings.

A biter comes lunging at me, dragging his foot, and chomping at the bit. Because of his proximity, I stab one of my throwing knives into his head taking him down. Out of the corner of my eye I see another biter approaching but this one I’m able to take down with a toss of one of my knives. It hits the dead girl in the eye, and she falls to the ground.

Phoenix

We’ve been handling Ike with kid gloves in some way or another for far too long. When I lost Rian, I was a wreck for months…until one day things just got easier. It’s been blow after blow after blow to Ike and he hasn’t had the proper time to process it. Unfortunately, in this kind of a world, time is not a luxury we have. It’s sickening to say it but maybe everything happens for a reason. Maybe we are here on this island for Ike to get the breather he needs and rebuild himself from the inside out. Maybe this is what I needed to know that I can survive without Cullen. It’s not something I’d ever want but dwelling on the past isn’t going to do me any favors. The only thing we can do is try to stay positive as Bowie so annoyingly pointed out and continue to move forward. If Cullen is alive, we will find each other again.

Chapter Twenty-Four

Through your memories and experiences, your future self is observing and guiding you.

Anthony Briscane swiveled his eyes from the road to the cell phone mounted on his dashboard. The signal tracker led across the Golden Gate Bridge to Mt. Tamalpais State Park. He picked up that Diana was returning to the site of the helicopter crash.

Why? And why the urgency?

Briscane zoomed along the road and hoped that a cop wouldn’t stop him for speeding. The signal followed the beach road, then slowed, halted for an instant, then sped off. He mashed a button on the screen to pinpoint the spot.

A half-mile from the location, he turned off the headlights. At a quarter of a mile, he pulled off the road and parked. The location was remarkably secluded. Because of the trees and the curve of the beach, he couldn’t see the Bay Bridge and though San Francisco was but a few miles to the south, the city wasn’t much more than a glow across the horizon.

Not knowing the destination, Briscane had dressed in his usual after-hours clothing, a golf jacket, business shirt, and casual pants. In a rush to get going, he had slipped on whatever footwear was handy, in this case, a pair of expensive dress shoes.

He chafed at the idea that in the Controllers’ campaign for world domination, where every angle was accounted for, this pursuit to stop the biggest threat to their mission stuttered along in such an ad hoc manner.

He puzzled over his next moves. What task should he concentrate on? Finding Diana and stopping her once and for all? Or finding out why she was here? Was it that red book? Which would be the bigger prize?

After all the missteps in trying to kill Diana, he knew she seemed to have a guardian angel watching over her. Of course, Briscane didn’t believe in angels or any of that supreme-being religious rot, but he couldn’t deny that her ability to scoot out of the tightest of predicaments was more than uncanny. In his training, they had taught him to never rely on luck, to account for every variable, and to leverage your strengths—including psychic powers—against your enemy’s weaknesses so there would be no doubt about the outcome.

Then at the end of his Monarch training, his chief instructor advised him, “But in the final analysis, it’s better to be lucky than good.”

And so far, Diana had been very, very lucky.

Briscane walked carefully along the road to the beach, to the spot where Diana had gotten out of the car. Briscane realized that the light from his phone screen was giving him away, so he stuffed it into a jacket pocket.

He crouched on the road’s shoulder and studied the ground that led to the beach. His spirits lifted when he spied a boot tread in the soft dirt, then noticed another of a different tread, and another. Hikers would have trekked up and down this road. He let out a curse. Seemed nothing was going right for him.

Let’s try something different. He relaxed and eased into a meditative state, hoping that in her rush to get here, Diana wouldn’t consider that he would probe for her mind.

All that came back was silence. Her mind was locked tight.

Briscane stood and scoped out the beach. Anyone walking along the water’s edge would be silhouetted against the surf. Assuming that this was what Diana was doing.

He thought he saw something move across the sparkle of moonlight on the water. It was hard to tell. The something moved again. The something was a person wearing a ball cap.

Briscane’s nerves jittered with anticipation. Diana’s luck was about to run out.
