“I thought we would be square by now, Scott.”  He said as he wrapped an arm around Scottie.  He started slowly patting down his jacket looking for scraps of anything he could take.  “Nothing, man, not a thing.  That’s too bad.”

“Here, I was holding this for him,” I handed him the few dollars I had on me.  “That’s all, honest.”  The second year senior grabbed the crumbled wad and looked me over.

“Alright, this is start.”  He butted Scottie in the shoulder, nearly knocking him over.  “I’ll see you later.”  We heard the click of a lighter as he disappeared around the corner, not even bothering to bypass the dogs.

“I’ll get you the money, Archie,” Scottie said as he straightened himself up and we ducked around the corner.  “We’ll get burgers sometime soon, my treat.”

“Yeah,” I put my hands in my then empty pockets.  “So what’s with that man?  You owe some goon money?”

“It’s complicated. I have it under control, Archie.  I just need some extra time. You really saved my ass, man. Thanks.”

We went back inside and snuck in the free lunch line.  I saw that grey lump of macaroni and did my best not to think about those buttery grilled unions and that patty covered in real melted cheese.   The smell of grill seasoning was in my brain and I didn’t want to let it go because what was in front of me was the same thing I’d had all week, leftover from the year before probably.

I told Scottie everything was fine but I was still pretty annoyed.  What was he doing worrying about money anyway?  He’s all set. In two years he’ll be living in the city and Panzer and everything about this place will be nothing but a memory, including me.

* * * *

I skipped the bus home.  I wanted to clear my head. I was tired of the bus, that parking with the rust piles, and that metallic smell filling the air.  I was practically choking on it so I did the only thing that made any sense to me at that moment.  I ran.

I ran flat out until cold air filled my lungs and my throat grew dry.  It felt like I swallowed gravel. I could see the other kids at the burger stand enjoying their burgers and I could smell the butter on the grill, but I just kept on running.

I didn’t stop until I hit right around Seventy-fifth Street with those half abandoned office buildings.  One of them was barely finished; it hung open at the time with the crumbling concrete showing through the fading paint job.  I took one look at it, a building I walked by a hundred times in my life, and nearly collapsed to the ground.  The pain in my head was skull-splitting.  I could feel veins straining as the world spun out around me.

“C’mon,” I said as I looked for the nearest place to sit down.  “Don’t be that guy.  Don’t be the kid who passes out in the middle of the street.   No. No, Archie.”  I dug my fingers into a metal pole.  “Don’t be that guy.”

And then it passed, like a tide clearing out a layer of sand on the beach, my head was suddenly clear.   I pried my hand away from the pole and moved forward on shaking legs, but I just couldn’t escape the nagging feeling that something was there, something big.  It whispered in the back of my skull and echoed even after I’d made my way down the block and back to our little tenement.  “It’s not a tumor. I’m fairly sure it’s not a tumor,” I said as I rounded the corner to my neighborhood.  “I’m like eighty-five percent sure it’s not a tumor. Seventy percent.”

My head was still spinning as I stumbled back home.  I couldn’t even tell which building was mine at first.  I was guided by the smell of rust and looked for the old trucks with collected debris and scrap metal hanging out the back that belonged to our super.  It wasn’t until I saw those, and smelled the collecting water in his tire pile on the side of the building, that I knew I was home.

Just like every other building, ours was a pile of bricks built on top of a puddle of mud with a fire escape barely holding on at the side.  Sometimes I thought about climbing that fire escape, just once.  I looked up at my window without the bars on it and I knew I could do it if it wasn’t for that final jump, which was just a little too high.

I stepped on broken glass on my way up to the stoop.  The pain cleared by the time I hit the door but my head still felt fuzzy.  It was like a radio on static in my brain.  There were flashes of that Seventy-fifth street building, with its wild thorn bushes surrounding a paved path with weeds stick through and a roof that remained unpainted.  They’re flashes of me and words like “asset” and “rendezvous”, but they were only coming through the fog every once in a while as I plodded up each creaking and warped stair to our doorway.

Summary from Goodreads

Since the night her mother was murdered, sixteen-year-old Rory Gray has known one truth: There are no good Seeders.

In post-apocalyptic Australia, the scientists known as Seeders have built a Citadel surrounded by food-producing regions and populated with refugees from the wars and famine. To maintain their control, the Seeders poisoned the land and outlawed the saving of seeds.

It’s been six years since Rory graced the Seeders’ circus stage as the Wind Dancer and still the scars on her body haven’t healed. Even worse are the scars on her heart, left by a Seeder boy who promised to protect her.

Now the Seeders are withholding supplies from Rory’s region for perceived disobedience. Utilising the Wanderer knowledge she received from her mother, Rory must journey to the Citadel through uninhabitable terrain to plead for mercy.

However, the Citadel isn’t as Rory remembered. The chief plant geneticist is dying and rumours fly that the store of viable seed is dwindling. The Seeders are desperate to find a seed bank they believe Rory can locate, and they will stop at nothing to get it.

To defy the Seeders means death. But Rory has been close to death before--this time she’s learned the value of poison.

Recommended for fans of The Hunger Games, strong protagonists, circuses and nature!

Excerpt

I run until it feels like my lungs will burst and every drag of air is excruciating. Then I stumble around in the dark for hours until I finally give up and start to climb again. I go up as far as I can, as high as the branches will support me, and wait for the coming dawn.

I’m awoken by the hollowness in my stomach. My eyes are grainy and the light is too bright, but I force them open. I’m way above the first canopy, and this high up, the forest is covered in a layer of mist so dense it could be snow.

But no layer of weather would be magical enough to obscure the other sight. High above the treetops, pushing upwards so the tips of the skyscrapers disappear into the clouds, is the Citadel. I hadn’t even noticed it was so close. On this level, the Iron Gates and the six-metre wall surrounding the Citadel are obscured by trees. Besides Warden Tower and the distant gleam from the dome over the Forgotten Garden, the skyline has changed dramatically from what I once knew. Skyscrapers have risen and fallen, and there’s a sense that the entire city is slowly expanding over the mountain it rests on.

It feels wrong to be trying to get back into the Citadel after so long. I barely escaped the first time, and only because I suspect Papa made some kind of untoward deal with the Seeders in exchange for my freedom. Yet seeing it so close, knowing it’s not just a figment of my imagination, fills me with a sense of urgency.

I’m not ready. I don’t have enough information about what I’m getting myself into. So I do the only thing that comes naturally when I’m unsure. I start to climb and don’t stop until the branch I cling to is little more than sapwood. I seat myself with my belly against the tiny leader branch and hug the tree as it sways precariously against the prevailing wind. In this moment, I actually feel like I’m a part of the eternal dance between the earth and the sky. The branch tips horizontally, and I close my eyes and pretend I’m on a ride at the fair that accompanies the circus around the regions.

I smile and then catch myself as a sickening thought occurs to me. Do I really love soaring over the earth, or is it something the Seeders have planted in me by conditioning? If it’s the latter, does it say something about me that I’ve embraced being up so high?

“Are you in a lot of pain?” It was a stupid question. My eyes travelled to the front of his shirt.

He pulled back a little, as if to protect his wound from my intrusive gaze.

“I’m fine, Ruby,” he said, but kept his eyes trained on the ceiling, his expression unreadable.

“How long have you had this one for?” I reached out and gently traced my trembling finger along the thin silvery line on his face and neck, moving from his jaw down to his collarbone.

Byron closed his eyes and exhaled raggedly. “A long time. Don’t look at it,” he rasped. “It’s ugly.”

I swallowed thickly and gazed at the fine structure of his face, at the thick lashes resting against his cheekbones and the sensual swell of his lips. “Nothing about you could ever be ugly.”

At my words, Byron opened his eyes and fixed them on me. He gently tugged my arm and waist, rolling me on top of him. He breathed hard from the exertion.

I blushed from being so close to his face and sat up, straddling him, my thighs on either side of his waist.

“You’re so beautiful, Ruby,” Byron whispered, his hands finding my hips.

I shifted slightly, conscious of the growing hardness I could feel beneath me.

Outside, the sky was darkening, but there was just enough light coming in through the window for me to see the look on Byron’s face. I’d never been looked at like this before.

“Come here,” he whispered, sliding his hands from my hips up my lower back, gently pressing me down.

I bent and hovered over him, careful not to apply any pressure to his chest, but Byron wrapped an arm around my waist and slid a hand behind my neck and gently pressed me down so that I could feel every inch of his firm body beneath me. The sensation made my pulse quicken and my heart stutter. A flush, hotter than the recent weather, burned through my veins and heated my body.

Against my neck, Byron’s breath came faster.

Our lips came together, soft and chaste at first, but as soon as our tongues touched the kiss grew deeper and harder. Byron’s hands slid up my back to tangle in my hair while I ran my hand through his.

He moaned softly and suddenly the kiss kicked up a gear. Our hands crossed paths and we entwined our fingers together, briefly, before moving on to touch each other’s bodies, wherever our hands could reach. Every inch of Byron felt hard, whereas, beneath his careful touch, he made me feel soft like I was something delicate and precious. It was exquisite.

I couldn’t get enough of him. I wanted to somehow meld us into one person.

I drew him tight against me and he groaned against my mouth, the sound sending a jolt of excitement to my lower belly, that is, until he stiffened beneath me and pushed me off.

I hadn’t pleasured him, I’d hurt him.

“Are you okay?” I knelt beside him, horrified at what I’d done, my hands hovering over his chest.

Byron remained on his back, his chest rising and falling in short, sharp rasps, his jaw tense, his hands twisting at my bed cover.

“I’m so sorry. Is it bad? What should I do?”

“It’s okay. Don’t be sorry,” he whispered hoarsely, looking away. “It’s not your fault, Ruby. It’s me.”

“I’m the one who crushed you,” I said softly.

He sighed and steadied his breath.

“No. I mean, I shouldn’t be here, doing this…starting something with you…” he met my eyes, “…something that can never really go anywhere.” He exhaled, it sounded harsh and angry. “Remember, I’m leaving soon, Ruby.”

I tied my hair up with the band I kept around my wrist and tried to keep my face neutral so that he couldn’t see how I really felt about him leaving. We’d only just gotten to know each other. I liked the guy. I didn’t want him to leave.

“Is this to do with your music? Because you want to tour? Or because of this…this thing with your parents?”

Byron smiled down at the bedcover, but it was a bittersweet smile. “I wish this was about something as simple as music.”
