In a world of science, magic is an abomination, but not the vile creation Royal Inquisitor Simon Whitlock once believed it to be. Accompanied by his apothecary companion, Luthor Strong, and Matilda Hawke, a werewolf, they return to the capital of Callifax, eager to convalesce after their last adventure.
Their peace is short-lived, however, as they are quickly sent on another mission. It seems the iron mines of Whitten Hall have ceased their production, no longer sending its ore to the crown. The Ministry of Trade has sent inquiries, but its representatives have all fled from the train ride to the distal outpost. It seems a vampire stalks the trains in and out of Whitten Hall, a vampire that will reveal the secret of the iron mine and the darkness that resides within.

Interviews
Where’s home for you?
A: Being
in the Army, I’ve lived all over the place, but we currently live in Graham,
WA.
What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learned?
A: The
motto “Semper Gumby”, which was given to me by an old coworker. Semper is Latin for “always” and Gumby was a
flexible green cartoon character. It’s
literally “Always Flexible” but it means don’t hold too tightly to one idea or
plan, because invariably something will go wrong and you’ll have to adapt. It’s really pertinent as an author, since
storylines so often go off on tangents that you couldn’t plan for.
What’s your favorite line from a book?
A: “You
know," said Arthur, "it's at times like this, when I'm trapped in a
Vogon airlock with a man from Betelgeuse, and about to die of asphyxiation in
deep space that I really wish I'd listened to what my mother told me when I was
young."
"Why, what did she tell you?"
"I don't know, I didn't listen.”
-Hitchhiker’s
Guide to the Galaxy
Are any of your characters inspired by real people?
A: Most of
my smarmy characters (specifically Sean from the World Aflame series) are
pretty much doppelgangers of my friends.
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve tried to surround myself more and more with
quick-witted, immature people. They make
life more interesting.
Do you have a routine for writing?
A: I try
to write for 1 hour a day. If I can do
that, I can finish a novel in 3-4 months.
Realistically I almost never reach that goal, but a man can dream.
Where and when do you prefer to do your writing?
A: I have
an office/library at my house. I guess I
assume that I can absorb quality writing from the books around me, but so far
no such luck.
What’s the best compliment you’ve ever received about your writing?
A: One of
my friends was beta reading Burden of Sisyphus and had reached a suspenseful
point in the book. She was in her room
(we were deployed to Iraq at the time) and just as she was really getting into
the story, we knocked on the door to find out if she wanted to join us for
dinner. From the other side of the door,
we heard her scream and fall out of her chair.
Knowing that I scared the crap out of someone with my writing made it
all worthwhile.
What’s the hardest thing you’ve ever had to write?
A: I’m
terrible at writing romance. I still
blush at sex scenes, even the fade to black ones.
What are you working on now?
A: I
finished book 3 in Magic & Machinery, which will be coming out in
November. Rather than delve directly
into book 4, I’m taking a break and finishing a science fiction novel called
Transcription Error, about a homicide detective trying to solve a murder that’s
made all the more complicated by the use of cloning.
