Heart of a Witch Clean

I’d never particularly liked humans, but I’d never wanted to kill one. Until now.

Hidden in a kingdom that hates witches, I’m forced to hide what I am. With my sister working in a secret dark magic club, and our family’s shop gaining unwanted attention, things couldn’t be worse when the notorious witch hunter, Damian Shaw, comes to town.

When my sister shows up dead, and my family’s name is called into question, we’re forced to adopt new aliases and leave the home we cherished. As I watch my life fall apart, I vow to destroy the hunter responsible, but his punishment would not be swift. Death was too easy.

Redforest is a quaint town, with a church, pretty shops, and like any good town, a dark past. When my family and I move in, I set my sights on the Shaw family, quickly learning everything I can about them. Damian’s son, Elijah, is the hunter’s greatest pride. His heir. His confidante. The only family he trusts.

I come up with a plan. I am going to shatter every good thing in Damian’s life, ending with his son. My goal: make Elijah Shaw fall in love with me, twist him into the very thing his father hates, then kill him.

With my heart challenged, the attraction growing, I find myself trapped in a deadly game. In a twist of fate, Elijah might just end up being the death of me.

My dreams were like an ocean of layers. They got darker the farther I fell. Blue robes, daggers, and dead people haunted my nightmares, and in the last one before waking, shouting erupted, words pounding against my soul as I felt hands grab my arms.

My eyes fluttered open, and I jumped to my feet. I punched Cas in the arm, pushing him away from me. “What in the underworld are you doing?” I asked breathlessly.

Tears glossed his dark brown eyes. “I had to wake you! You were right.”

I ran cold. I’d never heard those words leave his mouth. “Cas?” I asked tentatively.

“It’s Ember. I waited up for her, but she didn’t come back, and it was almost three in the morning, so I went down to the club and…” His hand shot to his mouth, and a tear escaped into the gaps between his fingers. “The hunter attacked with his team. The whole place is torn apart, and they found dead bodies, sacrificed.” He paused for a short moment. “It’s enough to condemn everyone inside. I ran, but I couldn’t find Ember. I went to the kissing tree, but she wasn’t there. Y-you, don’t think she would have gone back to the club?”

My heart somehow felt heavier in my chest. “Where did he take them for trial?”

“He’s already begun the…” He tugged at his collar. “Punishments.”

Bile bit up my throat. “Where?”

“Town square. I was going there next.”

I pushed him out of the way and grabbed my boots, sharing a glance with my brother before running out the door. I prayed to deities I didn’t believe in that Ember was far away from all this. Anyone who’d heard of Damian Shaw knew that no witches passed a trial with him. If he caught us, we were already dead.

My stomach knotted as I ran toward the town square. Stars twinkled against the matte-black night, but the first hues of blue had already faded the speckled silver in the distance. It had to be four, maybe five o’clock, based on the sky. I’d heard he held trials at night because it was when he believed a witch’s powers were weakest. His logic was stupid, but then he was human and a priest to boot.

Please, Ember, don’t be there. Please.

If she was, then I’d have to expose us, because there was no way I was letting her die. I’d fight them. I should have brought weapons. I mentally kicked myself for not thinking of it back at the house. I heard footsteps behind me in the distance, but I didn’t turn to see who it was.

The town square was alight with torches and oil lamps, illuminating the freshly erected gallows and jeering crowd. My gaze climbed the wooden platform, and I found my worst nightmare come true.

“Play me,” he challenged.

I narrowed my eyes at him. Thayer waited.

“I can’t.” I dropped my arms and the crowd wailed. “I’m not a Shadow anymore and I don’t have near the energy I’d need to face you.”

“Mara, you know I always have energy to spare,” Thayer said and opened his arms. “Get over here.”

I looked at him standing with his arms extended. The short sleeves he had on would hardly protect him at all. My fingers tingled as anticipation burned through my body.

I held my stance for a second. Remembering where I was. Inside a massive courtyard with ornate carvings on the stone trim. The smell of dust and angst washed through the air. It felt like the home in my memory, not a home I would want now. But familiar at least.

With as much restraint as I could muster, I looked back at Thayer, open arms and grinning from ear to ear. I could play a game. It was easy. Even if my stomach twisted at the thought of the Rogues seeing this life, seeing me in this life.

But if they wanted to accept me, then they had to know part of me would always be a Shadow. After all, there were far worse things I could have shown them. My body took over after that. I shot forward, straight into him.

My arms wrapped around his neck, touching his hot skin. The energy released immediately. Thayer caught me and pulled me in tighter. My breath raced from my skin touching his.

Energy careened into me, too fast and hot. I tried to stop it, tried to slow it down. But the power crashed through my body, igniting every nerve.

After a few seconds, I stopped trying to stifle it.

It didn’t used to be this way.

I tapped my smoke on the ashtray, exhaling the herb-filled vapor. It was a delightful blend of local plants and made to order at the bar. This establishment seemed to have it all—smokes; drinks, both alcoholic and not; games; food; gambling. It was all here, meaning everyone in town occupied the small establishment at all hours of the day.

Thank goodness all I could smell was my herbal smoke and the alcohol on my friend Zach’s breath. I had a feeling the room smelled of sweat and wet fur.

“How many girly martinis are you going to drink tonight?” I raised an eyebrow and flashed him a grin.

Zach stared at me—his shimmering gold eyes unamused as he downed the rest of the fruity martini through his tiny straw. Why he always used them instead of drinking from the side of the glass, I did not understand. Perhaps it was so he’d feel he was pacing himself. Even if we both knew that was a lie.

Setting the glass down, Zach pulled loose strands of red hair back into his bun. “I’ll have you know these drinks taste a lot better than that straight alcohol you always drink.”

I sighed. “It’s not straight alcohol. It’s called whiskey.”

“Tastes nasty is what it is.”

I smiled a little. “Anyway, I should cut you off there. That’s your third one, and our contact isn’t even here yet.”

“There isn’t much alcohol in these. At least, I taste none.”

“Yeah, I have noticed you don’t. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t any in it. We have gone over this. You’re a year older than me—you should know better.”

He let out a breath of defeat. “Oh yeah, a whole whopping year. But fine, I won’t have another until the guy gets here. What’s he look like again?”

“He’s a human, and honestly, I’m not sure we can trust him. But he’s the only lead we’ve gotten so far.”

Glancing out at the crowded area, I noted all the beings that were having a good time. On the planet, there were a total of five different races, six if one counted Pleiadeans separate from humans. There were the Lyrans, who all appeared like a mix of a human and a wild cat. I spotted at least a dozen different groups that had Lyrans in here, and our bartender was one as well. That made sense since we were in the Lyran Zone. Then there were Sirians. There weren’t too many of those here—merfolk, who could change from being fishlike to human in a matter of seconds. Typically, the Lyrans and Sirians didn’t get along, just like cats and fish, but never say that to their face. They don’t appreciate that. Then there were Silurians, who were lizard-like and cold-blooded, both physically and emotionally. There were a few in here as well, and I did my best not to make eye contact with any of them.

Then, of course, there were the humans, which is what my kind appeared like as well, at least for the most part. I glanced around and found quite a few as humans liked to travel and settle among the different zones and then create half species, or half humans. Typical humans.

I sighed as I glanced around some more, seeing if I could spot my own race.

As if that were going to happen.

Abelia was sitting on a hard bench in the bank of wings.

The most precious possessions of the Winged Ones were stored in this vast space, with its ceilings higher than the highest ceilings of the halls of the White Castle. Its walls were covered in a row after a row of startlingly white wings. These were virgin wings: grown from a cell. Most of these beautiful limbs would never find a master. They would stay on this wall, unmoving and untouchable, almost sacred, for centuries to come. For many generations, the bank of wings was a manifest, a statement the Winged Ones made to the world and themselves. Its practical value was vague.

Abelia’s gaze wandered across the rows of the purely white wings. It paused upon a pair of tiny
wings. Had there been a case in their history when an infant needed to have a transplantation? Abelia hadn’t heard of such. She wondered why her people continued to keep the bank of wings so meticulously stocked. The only case there was an acute need for the transplantation of wings was when Tauria had needed it. No one lost their limbs these days.

Abelia was coming to the sanctuary since she was a child. She remembered her awe when she had entered this place for the first time. She had come with her class: her parents didn’t believe in separating themselves and their children from the crowd. Back then, she hadn’t expressed her admiration verbally. She hadn’t even thought about doing it. She had stayed reserved and dignified during the excursion, just as it was expected from a Ruler’s daughter. The children – they were six to eight at that time – had walked in pairs solemnly. At the same time, Doctor Slythe explained the molecular method of growing wings and its significant differences from cloning. Abelia had listened carefully: science was her favourite subject. But in this case, she had also marvelled at what she had seen around her. Since that first visit, she came here regularly. The feeling she had experienced being among the rows of bodyless wings had been so overwhelming that she had used every opportunity to repeat it. She just sat there, in front of the walls covered with human-created wings – the achievement of her nation that had secured their survival – and thought about everything she couldn’t talk about with others.

Abelia had come here as a child, then as a teenager. She had come here after she got married when she realised that something was wrong with her, with Mael and the whole arrangement of their perfect from the outside matrimony. She came here now. It was the only place where she could confess privately that she was happy. She was happier now than she had been in years.

She loved the feeling of solitude when she returned to her quarters after a day of meaningful activities. She loved the feeling of doing something meaningful. She didn’t feel lonely when the empty rooms greeted her with silence. She didn’t feel abandoned when no one, often not even Sonrisa, was there to talk to her and ask her about her day. She hadn’t noticed that at first, but when she had, she was taken aback, ashamed even. She soon recovered, realising that it was the way she was. She had been like this before, and she wouldn’t change.

Neglected Merge

Neglected Merge Book 1

**Silver medal in the 2021 Global Book Awards in the Science Fiction / Fantasy category;

** Finalist award in the 2021 Readers’ Favorite International Book Award Contest in the Fantasy General category.

Award-winning novel “Neglected Merge” is an inspirational and thought-provoking futuristic fantasy romance.

The story of fated lovers developed against a backdrop of a new post-apocalyptic world painted in bright tones. A fortuitous meeting of Tauria, an independent woman living in one utopian-style world, and Doron from high society of the other world, is destined to be the new beginning for both worlds.

Tauria, aged 32, lives in the society that seems to believe that happiness is a universal concept. People, who had survived the near apocalyptic experience, have built a whole new world full of pleasure and easiness. It is designed to make everyone feel happy every minute of their lives. Work brings satisfaction, hobbies are encouraged, relationships are supposed to bring out only positive emotions. Does it matter that things that don’t fit into the general happy pattern get discarded and disappear? Things like friendship and commitment. Things like true love. It is supposed to be enough with lightness and never-ending joy.

But there are two worlds now. They are forced to exist side by side. Can they find a way to live together? The Chinese proverb says: “When the winds of change blow, some people build walls and others build windmills.” What will the people of two worlds, so utterly different and at the same time so similar, choose?

“Neglected Merge” won a silver medal in the 2021 Global Book Awards in the Science Fiction / Fantasy category. It also received a finalist award in the 2021 Readers’ Favorite International Book Award Contest in the Fantasy General category.

“I just don’t want to have useless hopes. It hurts.”

It sounded pathetic, and it was exactly what made her feel that life in their perfect new world was empty and void of colour, but she was born and raised with these beliefs and it was not a one year’s – and three days with a Winged One – task to change her completely.

“I know. I understand. But life full of love and emotions inevitably hurts. I’m telling you this with the whole authority with a soon-to-be certified historian. Others in my course see it as a disadvantage, which was successfully eliminated after the Merge. They think that it’s wiser to live our lives like a straight line without fluctuations. And they’re satisfied that the mankind that had survived had done everything to make life a straight line. We don’t have poverty, we don’t have crime, if only occasional, insignificant, we don’t have to fight for our land and even for love. Mankind has learned its lessons. But human nature is more complicated than we imagine. And the fact that after the Merge we found that we are not alone in our world is the best proof for that.”

Tauria listened to his declaration and admired the depth of thought and the simplicity of complicated things put into words. She felt exactly the same way and she knew that he was right. Could it ease all her fears? No, it couldn’t. But it eased her panic and stopped the denial that she had started to feel about her whole plan to see Doron again.

“There is no other explanation available for us now than this one: Doron was doing everything that was in his power to get back to you. Legitimately, this time. And the fact that he is the king’s son only makes this theory more trustworthy. He actually has such power. Which means, Tauria, and don’t start again with your melodrama, that he is more capable to find a way for you two to be together than if he was a Winged One carpenter.”

“You know that in case something goes wrong I’ll be crying on your shoulder, Byrne, don’t you? For the rest of our miserable melodrama free lives.”

“Oh, my good old Tauria and her lost sense of humour are back. Now I can leave you to your reading task for tomorrow without any worries for your sanity.”

“Thank you, you’re a real friend. I promise, I won’t jump out of the window.”

“Please, make sure of it.”

“I will, now, go.”

Byrne left, and Tauria was quite ready to dive into the most fascinating part of the history of mankind.
