A note she finds with the body suggests the dearly departed had a secret rendezvous planned with somebody on the island. Interview

Have you always wanted to be a writer?
In high school, when asked by the yearbook editor what I would be doing in ten years, I answered, “Writing the 835th first chapter of a book.”  I always wanted to be a writer, but I didn’t have the necessary discipline and/or understanding of how a book goes together until my early 30s.  (I also didn’t know what I wanted to write!)

At what age did you discover your love of writing?
First came my love of reading.  Like most writers I know, I was an early and avid reader, and have been a compulsive book consumer my entire life.  I knew early on that I wanted to be able to write stories that moved others the way the stories I read moved me, but had no idea how to even begin.  I wrote story beginnings by the dozen, kept journals starting in middle school, and wrote poetry.  I think I’m a compulsive writer; I’m happier at the end of the day if I’ve written, and I still keep a loose journal that I write in almost daily, but almost never read.

What was the first story that you wrote?
I think it was a horror story in third grade that somehow involved a ghost and a bloody footprint.  Evidently I did a fair job of it, as I recall the class being oddly quiet and somewhat saucer-eyed when I looked up from the page at the end.  I remember that being my first experience of having connected with readers (or listeners, as the case may be) and moved them with my words.

When were you first published? How were you discovered?
I was first published in the mid-2000s.  I met my agent at the Writers’ League Conference in Austin.  Murder on the Rocks, the first Gray Whale Inn mystery, was a finalist in the conference manuscript competition, and Jessica Faust of BookEnds was the agent I knew I had to meet.  I was first in line at her pitch table, and after I breathlessly reeled off my spiel, she looked at me and said, “Well, there are a lot of bed-and-breakfast mysteries already, but I guess you can send me the proposal.”  As you can imagine, that took the wind out of my sails, but she e-mailed me a week after receiving the proposal telling me she wanted to read the rest of the manuscript.  I accepted her offer of representation in the master bathroom, as I had two small children and that was the only room in the house where I could talk without someone begging for cookies and/or hanging off of me.

What is the most difficult part of the whole writing process?
I think it’s deciding what story to write next.  I have tons of ideas in my head, but only so much time.  I love writing in the series I know and reconnecting with favorite characters, but I also like exploring new territory.  It’s hard for me to balance those needs.

What do you like to read?
I’ve been reading a lot of nonfiction lately, particularly books on creativity and the writing process.  Although there are a lot of stellar mysteries out there, I’ve not read as many these past few years; instead, I’ve been sampling the historical fiction and fantasy genres.  I have a longstanding addiction to armchair travel, but have read almost everything out there.  I need more people to sell their houses and move to exotic countries.  Or maybe I could sell my house and move to an exotic country.  Hmm….

Where can people learn more about you?
I spend an inordinate amount of time on Facebook – feel free to friend me there at www.facebook.com/karenmacinerney.  I also have an updated web site, which is very exciting (for me, at least), at www.karenmacinerney.com.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell us about yourself?
I am so thankful to be able to write for a living, and would encourage anybody who shares that dream to read a lot, write a lot, and stay the course.  The writing game is, to a large extent, a numbers game; the more times you have at bat, the higher chance you have of hitting it out of the park, so to speak.  (I think you also learn more with each book you finish.)  Write a book, clean it up, send it out, start your next one while you’re shopping your first one, and repeat.  And for goodness’ sake, don’t keep massaging the same manuscript for twenty years.  Send that sucker out and write something new!

Please tell us in 20 words or less, why we should read your book.
If you enjoy mysteries (or lobster, or islands, or muffins) and want to experience a cozy inn set in an island community in Maine, book a literary stay at the Gray Whale Inn.  Okay, so that’s thirty-three.  But who’s counting?

What inspired you to write this book?
I read a book on life in the Maine islands a few years back which made me aware of some of the unusual challenges these small communities face.  Those real-life stories were the jumping-off point for Death Runs Adrift, which explores how some of those issues affect the close-knit community of Cranberry Island.

Thanks for having me… and I hope you enjoy the latest installment of the Gray Whale Inn mysteries!

Relationships are put to the ultimate test as future dreams are questioned and friendships are thrown on the line for love.

Excerpt

My voice grew stronger as I sang through the first verse of Cheek to Cheek. Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald sang my favorite version of the song. I was so in love with those two. Probably because my mother was a jazz/swing freak. Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong…they were always filling our house with music. But Ella, she was my mom’s favorite and she’d quickly became mine. The woman had a voice like an angel…the supreme songbird. That’s what Mom used to say.

I ended the verse strong on the high note and was about to dip low for the last line when a deep, masculine voice joined me from the other side of the wall.

My breath hitched, my heart rate tripling. Man, that was a sexy voice. My insides flooded with heat and it wasn’t because of the shower. I bit my lip, wondering how to respond. My mind was flashing with images of a naked man beneath his own shower head. What did he look like? If the person matched the voice, he must be built like a greek god. My insides coiled tight as I touched the tiles in front of me.

I’d never had such a physical reaction to someone’s voice before. I mean, yeah David was sexy in his own way, but whoever was on the other side of this wall was making my knees weak.

The man chuckled, a low gruff sound from his throat…at least I think that’s what it was. It was kind of hard to hear through the wall, but then he started singing again and it was crystal clear.

He finished the next line.

He paused.

Waiting.

For me.

Pressing my lips together, I blinked a couple of times and then grinned.

excerpt

Chapter 1

Virginia swept back her long blonde hair and smiled as enticingly as she could at the man on the other side of the chain mesh gate. Her little black dress was fine but the six inch red stilettos were going to kill her any second. He grinned back, anchoring his fingers high in the mesh, leaning on the gate, and exuding eau de biker. The muscle of his flexed and tattooed bicep shone under the florescent light. “C’mon in. We don’t bite much. Name’s Jace.” She breathed in again, swooned, then swiftly recovered and slipped past Jace into the garage. Eau de Biker. Mmm. Oil, leather, and beer smells always did it to her. Her panties had wet through in an instant. But, she had a job to do. The garage was dark, dingy and filled with testosterone-hyped tatted up bikers. They roamed across the concrete floor checking out the chromed bikes like a pack of thirsty hungry snakes let loose on a Sunday picnic of virginal squeaky mice. She shook her head, knowing she’d imagined that with way too many adjectives. Sometimes her imagination went a little gaga. Past the knowledge that she was here to look for Cyndie, she wondered, ever so hopefully, if among these men she would find her holy grail – what she’d been saving herself for from the day she opened the pages of her first romance novel – the man with the ten inch purple-headed schlong. Fabio with his flowing locks could take a hike.

Marriage Isn't For You: It's for the One You Love

Excerpts

Excerpt #1
“Wait, don’t forget the light,” she spoke quickly.
I nearly laughed. “Are you out of your mind, woman?” I pushed her legs apart and settled myself between them so she couldn’t close them tightly back together. I splayed my hands across her stomach.
“I like the light off,” her eyebrows drew together.
“Too damn bad.” I moved the tip of my pointer finger in small circles around her concave navel. “Do you know how many times I’ve played this scenario in my head? Try every day since I was fifteen years old. No way am I going to miss out on the way your body writhes underneath mine or the look on your face when I make you come.” Her hips tipped upward with my words.

Excerpt #2
“I want you to come with your legs wrapped around my neck,” I said against the bare, wet flesh. Chills trailed down her thighs. “And then I want you to come around my dick with your legs around my waist.”

Scents and Senses: Supernatural Friends.
What the fairy tales didn’t tell you

Playing the role of a knight in shining armor is more complicated than it seems in the storybooks, as sixteen-year-old Joy discovers when she repeatedly comes to the rescue of a fifteen-year-old human. But when she meddles in the girl’s social life, Starra sends her packing.

Starra is determined to completely dissociate herself from the subterranean creature that has manipulated her life and cast her into the limelight. However, her resolve is soon tested when she becomes involved in a critical situation where supernatural assistance can enable her to carry out a daring plot.

Eventually, Starra’s involvement with her new other-wordly friends extracts a heavy price when she is beset by challenges that range from the down- to-earth struggles of a typical teenage student, to the realm of the fantastic. Nothing prepares her, however, for the ultimate challenge.

Chapter One

Joy

Ever since I’ve been old enough to kick off on a condor with my own two chicken feet, I’ve been drilled to mind my own business.

Mind your own business, the first of the American Ten Commandments.

It’s not one I subscribe to, even though in our community, not minding my own business means more than social suicide; it’s a crime when we ascend above ground.

For thousands of years we deeems have kept away from the creatures running over our heads with their five-toed feet. So if anyone in my community gets wind of the risky job I’m on these days, I’m practically a goner. But that doesn’t stop me from shadowing a certain teenage fivetoe.

There’s also a totally different occupational hazard involved in this position I’ve created for myself, one I’m suffering from right now: this job occasionally makes school seem relatively stimulating. Yawn. I’ve played too many Angry Condor games to count since Starra got involved in some fantasy book a couple of hours ago and lost contact with the real world. Even if I knew how to become visible to the fivetoe eye and suddenly revealed myself, I bet she wouldn’t notice me, the cute teen perched on her windowsill.

Time simply refuses to advance, and I have to resort to counting the spider eggs cocooned in their nest on a nearby tree branch. A sudden sigh interrupts my lame occupation. There’s a starry look in the big eyes, and I notice the novel is slipping out of Starra’s dreamy grip. This is my window of opportunity! I finger the starchy edge of the book jacket and coax the book forward.

Thud. The book falls to the floor, and the movement seems to bring Starra back to her senses. At last she grabs a hoodie and sets out, probably for one of her night excursions on the Vista Del Mar Path. Are we running or biking tonight?

Running it is. I jog behind her, finding the excursion by the shoreline an improvement to watching her read. At least we are moving.

She runs for half an hour, at a speed faster than the sea turtle pace usual for fivetoes. Then she slows to a stop at a jagged rock, half-submerged in the ocean. I groan quietly and contemplate leaving. From experience, I know she’ll climb to the top of her rock and dream away. I start backing off, but when I’m some fifty feet away, I look back. Starra makes a pretty picture there, her silhouette perched high on the rock. Her long legs are tucked under her, and her head hangs back as she keeps her gaze on the stars above. If only she would let loose the heavy dark mane of hair she always twists up at the back of her neck, she would truly look like a mermaid risen from the sea.

Something pulls me back to her. I can’t explain it, but I have a feeling trouble is lurking nearby, waiting to snatch her in its net.

My chicken feet make an about face and follow Starra home as she takes the shorter route through town.

Author Loren Secretts

Loren Secretts was raised in a book-filled home, in a sleepy east coast suburb of the US. These factors are undoubtedly responsible for her early design of a number of exciting imaginary worlds that she could escape to from time to time during her childhood.

In her teen years, between schoolwork and lending an ear to her friends, Loren had less opportunity to go AWOL. Instead, her experience as a confidant to others inspired her to major in psychology in college and earn her M.A. in the field on the west coast.

As an adult, Loren has found fulfillment in her work with children and families for more than a decade. Her passion for writing was revived when she discovered that she enjoyed delving into the human psyche to write psychological reports. But clients' reports are safe with Loren, who guards secrets fastidiously. Indeed, one of her aspirations is to work as a psychotherapist for the CIA, but since she now lives with her family in Canada, that dream will have to await its turn…

Promotional Event ~ An Explosion of Being by Doug & Barbara Dillon

Title: An Explosion of Being
An American Family’s Journey into the Psychic

Authors: Doug & Barbara Dillon
Genre: Non-fiction | Paranormal
Released: July 18, 2011
Length: 342 Pages
Presented by: As You Wish Tours

A Message From Co-author, Doug Dillon

Do you believe in the paranormal? My wife Barbara and I sure didn’t many years ago but all that rapidly changed when my dad died. That event and the many strange things that happened back then set Barb and me on a multi-year quest for understanding.

We did extensive research, talked to lots of people, had many incredible experiences and eventually collected so much information that we wrote the book you see on this post. Prentice Hall published it worldwide and Barb and I ended up doing radio talk shows across the U.S. and up into Canada.

I think that offering the introduction to our book (below) is the best way to give you a quick sense of what we experienced and why we went public with what happened. After that, I’ll bring you up to date with where things stand now.

Introduction

There are those times in most of our lives when, perhaps for just an instant, we stand back and question the very nature of physical existence. The penetrating event causing our hesitation may be a shocking realization of life’s fragility, the absolute bitterness of injustice, or some strange inexplicable departure from the norms of reality as we know them.

Whatever the reason for the momentary lapse of certainty about the world, it has stopped us dead in our tracks, whether anyone else recognized what was happening or not.

Usually, we recover from these occurrences by smoothing them over with forgetfulness or by applying a long held standard of belief that seems to give us some sort of answer. Even if we wanted to, it often isn’t very acceptable to poke and prod these events for new or different understandings.

Such activity simply makes most people uncomfortable, including ourselves, so why bother? On we move, then, with daily life as it existed before, but with a dim awareness something important may have been abandoned.

Seven years ago, our lives fit this pattern perfectly and seven years ago, a multitude of jolting, unusual incidents shocked us into a very conscious decision to pursue our questions, regardless of where they might lead. Since then, we have uncovered a wealth of information that might be called psychic, or spiritual, opening doors of perception for our family we never even knew existed.

This book is our attempt to share with you the fullness of our explorations into those unseen portions of life’s essence. We don’t ask for your acceptance of what you are about to read, but we do ask that you look for a part of yourself within our struggle for understanding.

Blurb

The year 2102--the world as it was no longer exists. Ravaged by nuclear war and polluted almost to the point of no return, Earth was dying. When the faeries came and brought their healing magic, humanity was grateful at first. Centuries of damage repaired in just five years, and during the course of that rehabilitation, they invaded. Quietly overthrown, the human race is now enslaved. The majority doesn’t even realize they have no free will. Branded, herded and kept only to further the agendas of the Fae Courts, humanity could be facing extinction.

But a resistance is coming…

Fianna Dolan has spent her entire young life preparing herself for an uprising against the Fae. One scorching summer night Fi's parents leave and never return. Thrust into a position of power she never expected, Fi struggles with her new position and the responsibility it entails. When a secretive fae man known only as Flint breaches the city’s defenses claiming he can help, Fi begins to doubt everything she's ever considered truth. As betrayals and deception come to light, will Fi want the answers she’s been seeking, or will trusting Flint lead to her destruction?

Excerpt

Once we get inside, I lead the way to what was the petites department back when the store was still doing business. I plan on grabbing what I need first and then heading to the men’s area so Flint can look around and I can pick up Eir’s things. Quick and efficient, I’ve done this many times in my life. Eir and I have been coming on these excursions for years and we are a well-oiled machine. What I didn’t count on was Flint.

When we were outdoors he was always well outside of my personal space, which is how I like things. For some reason the moment we step inside the store, I can feel him standing just slightly too close for my comfort. Every time I turn or stop, he’s right there; much too close and smirking at me when we almost brush into each other. By the time we get to the department I need, I’m flustered and blushing and I can’t quite put my finger on the exact reason why. I only know he needs to take three giant steps back from me so I can breathe again. I am practically jogging in my effort to keep space between us as I head to the display table of jeans and grab up three pairs in my size. They’ll all be too long, but I learned to hem things a long time ago and at least one pair will be made into shorts. I hear Flint chuckling softly to himself and bite my tongue to keep from asking him what the hell is so damned funny.

Stretched far beyond the normal parameters of my tolerance,  I grab up an assortment of tank tops and tee shirts and fold them into one of the tote bags without noting anything but their size. I’m about to head to the intimates department when I remember the irksome faery dogging my every step and stop abruptly. Said faery comes to a stop so close behind me that I can feel his breath on the back of my head, and I feel goosebumps break out over my skin. His chuckling has gained volume now, and I whirl around and spit out, “What in the world is so funny?” before I can stop myself.

He staggers back a couple steps. "I'm sorry, but..." He’s doubled over laughing now as he chokes out, "Considering you're someone who always has her panties in a bunch, I never would have guessed you went commando. That's what's so funny."

I feel all the blood rush to my face, and for a moment all I can do is sputter incoherently.  Then I manage, “My panties are none of your concern!” and think for a brief second about whacking him with the full tote bag I am clutching in my hand. I would really like to push him down the defunct escalator and watch as he breaks his neck, but instead I stomp to the intimates department, grab a few pairs of the boy shorts I wear and stuff them in my bag. Flint is still doubled over where I left him, chortling at his little joke. My hands are shaking but I breathe deeply and return to him; throwing an empty bag at his arrogant face before saying, “The men’s department is upstairs,” and walking away from him before I give in to my inner urge to kick him in the shins.
