Blog Tour ~ Unnatural Selection by Victoria Escobar

Unnatural Selection
By- Victoria Escobar
Genre- YA Sci-Fi
Publication Date- November 4th

I had no name. My assignment was M001/A5. Marpesia Project Test One, Fifth Embryo. I wasn’t considered human. I was a thing to be owned.

I just wanted freedom. I wanted out of the lab and away from being the guinea pig for hundreds of scientists. I wanted to see the world with my eyes not through a computer monitor.

Instead I took two bullets, fell from twenty stories and ran to save my life. From who and what I had no idea and that wasn’t important at the time. Life was important.

I had my freedom but no idea what to do with it. There’s no way to out run the past, and I had to face it. There were too many strings loose and too many people that would be more than happy to lock me in a cage again.

Life was an evolution of natural selection but thanks to human intervention I was Unnatural. I would be deciding who to allow living, and who needed to die.

Book Tour {Guest Post} Kelly’s Koffee Shop by Dianne Harman

Series: A Cedar Bay Cozy Mystery
Paperback: 152 pages
Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (November 8, 2014)
ISBN-13: 978-1503015630

Synopsis

Kelly pulled into the harbor parking lot next to the pier and noticed that Amber’s car wasn’t in its usual place and there was no sign of her. She was usually standing at the door of Kelly’s Koffee Shop, waiting for Kelly to open up. Wonder what that’s all about, she thought. The local residents of Cedar Bay come to Kelly’s Koffee Shop for breakfast, lunch, and lots of gossip. Kelly serves it all up as she works to solve the murder of the high school Homecoming Queen. The townspeople can’t believe what has happened in their sleepy little Oregon seaside town. She identifies five prime suspects, but which one did it? Follow Kelly, her boxer dog, Rebel, and her boyfriend, Mike, the county sheriff, as they try to determine who the killer is in a murder that’s shocked the town.

Kelly’s Coffee Shop is a mouth-watering cozy mystery with recipes

Guest Post

The Road to Kelly’s Koffee Shop

It pretty much started with this little guy! I love dogs and I love to cook. A cozy mystery incorporating those two things felt like a natural thing for me to do. The problem was that no one else wanted me to write about dogs and food.

Here’s why. I’ve published several books in the suspense and mystery genres which have done well. Blue Coyote Motel, Coyote in Provence, and Cornered Coyote were all award winning, bestselling books. The thinking by my mentor and others was – “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” In other words, don’t change the genre because you’ll lose your reader base.

Their point was valid, but for one year I kept thinking about writing a cozy mystery. Early last October my husband I took a vacation through Bryce Canyon National Park, Zion National Park, and Sedona. Our son and daughter-in-law flew in from Seattle to spend some family time. I remember getting my iPad out early one morning while I was drinking coffee in bed in the hotel. I sketched out Kelly’s Koffee Shop and decided to write it when I got home. I started it the day after we returned and it just flowed. The characters dictated where the story was going and Rebel, based on my boxer dog above, was a big part of the book, along with family recipes which I included in the book.

So against the advice of mentors, I published the book, did some social media on it, and that was it. I’d done what I wanted to do – write a cozy mystery A week later it was on the Hot New Releases in Animal and Culinary on Amazon. Since then it’s consistently been at the top of the cozy lists! I started doing a Happy Dance and writing the next book in the series. Since my other books had done well, but not this well, I didn’t encounter any resistance when I told the naysayers that I was writing a new book, Murder at Jade Cove, with Rebel, a couple of puppies, and more food. This book did the same thing that Kelly’s did. Climbed right to the top of the charts!

Naturally, the characters told me they needed more exposure, so I began writing White Cloud Retreat which continues the story of Kelly, the amateur sleuth who owns Kelly’s Koffee Shop, the county sheriff she’s engaged to, Mike, Rebel, and a cast of quirky characters. Dogs, teens, boomers, and lots of food figure into the novels.

People always ask where I get my recipes and ask me if I really cook those things. Yep! Our family has always liked to eat and when my husband was a California Senator, we entertained a lot in our home. I did all the cooking. I think one of my favorite memories was when someone asked my husband if they could have the name of the caterer because they’d like to use the caterer. They couldn’t believe it when my husband told them it was me. While I’ve never worked in a restaurant, I’ve taken a lot of cooking classes.

While I’m not one of the characters in my books, per se, a lot of the experiences and places I’ve been are. Unfortunately, we had to say goodbye to Rebel this year, but we just bought a new little boxer puppy who will be joining us on Valentine’s Day. Rather appropriate I think! And what are we naming her? Why, Kelly, for Kelly’s Koffee Shop, of course!

Hope you enjoy the read as much as I enjoyed the write. And here’s our new Kelly! How cute is she???

~~SUMMARY~~
Bloodlines-3D-Paperback-eReaderFollowing the acclaimed debut of The Enemy Inside and its sequel, Broken, comes the stunning conclusion to the ‘Edge of Darkness’ series by investigative journalist Vanessa Skye, Blood Lines.

Detective Alicia “Berg” Raymond is lying. She’s lying to the Chicago Police Department, to her boyfriend, Captain Jay O’Loughlin, but most of all, she’s lying to herself—about her past, her future, and her ongoing addiction.

As Berg investigates a series of brutal rapes and sinks under an ever-increasing caseload, she finds herself juggling every aspect of her life—finding justice for victims of crime, keeping her own sordid past buried from her colleagues, struggling with blackmail that threatens to push her over the edge, and protecting her lover from the details of all of it.

Wrapping her damaged head around living in a state of domestic bliss she’s certain she doesn’t deserve, Berg is driven by the need for justice and a determination to stop a rapist before any more innocent lives are ravaged.

But when enemies from the past threaten her present, she is once again vulnerable to the demons that have plagued her every day of her life.

It’s only a matter of time before her lies unravel and the fairy tale she’s finally started believing implodes . . . but the biggest threat of all, as it turns out, is her very own bloodline.

Can she save herself, and the casualties of crime, from the lurking darkness waiting to strike, or will her own mistakes drag her under—this time for good?

~~ABOUT THE AUTHOR~~
vskyeVanessa Skye has always had a love of words and spent her school years writing poetry, speeches, and fictional essays.

After completing a Bachelor of Arts in print journalism and studying psychology at Charles Sturt University, Vanessa got a job at Australia's largest publisher of regional and agricultural news and information, Rural Press, where she worked as a journalist in the central west of New South Wales for four years.

Thousands of stories later, Vanessa decided to move back to Sydney and try her hand at public relations while studying for a master’s degree in communication.

Skip forward a few years and Vanessa was once again joyfully studying various psychology subjects while managing a Sydney public relations firm. Enthralled with examining the motivations behind people’s actions, Vanessa realized what she really wanted to do in life was combine her love of words with her fascination for human behavior.

So Vanessa quit public relations to begin the significantly more impoverished life of a professional writer.

Inspired by a recurring dream, Vanessa wrote her crime fiction debut, The Enemy Inside, which challenges the concept of justice, asks if the need for vengeance sometimes justifies murder, and explores whether you can ever heal from childhood abuse. Broken is her second book in this series. In her spare time, Vanessa wrote a short story, The Piece, which was published in February 2012, by Dark Prints Press as a part of the 'One That Got Away' dark fiction anthology.

Vanessa now works as a freelance writer, lives in Sydney’s northern beaches, and tries to immerse herself in salt water at least once a day.

Praise for Bloodlines
"So good! As with the previous two books in this series, I absolutely loved it. The pacing was great, there was nice dry humour to lighten the very dark tone, and all the characters completed a satisfying arc from books one and two. Berg in particular is fantastic – I loved that she didn’t completely go back to her old ways when she was at her lowest, and the ending leaves us with hope for her future. " - Andrea

Cranberry Bluff
Cranberry Bluff
by Deborah Garner

Molly Elliott's quiet life in Tallahassee, Florida, is disrupted when routine errands land her in the wrong place at the wrong time: the middle of a bank robbery. Accused and cleared of the crime, she flees both media attention and mysterious, threatening notes, to move across the country to Cranberry Cove, where she has inherited her Aunt Maggie's bed and breakfast on the Northern California coast. Her new beginning is peaceful - that is, until five guests show up at the inn for a weekend, each with a hidden agenda.

Mix together one blushing honeymoon couple, one flamboyant boutique owner, a deadpan traveling salesman, and a charmingly handsome novelist, and there’s more than scones cooking at Cranberry Cottage Bed and Breakfast. As true motives become apparent, will Molly's past come back to haunt her or will she finally be able to leave it behind?

The police pick Kate as their number-one suspect, so she’s forced to team up with boyfriend Michael, best friend Rene, and German shepherd sidekick Bella to find the real killer. Yoga for Mystery Readers
I’ve been a mystery writer for the past three years, but I’ve been a fan for most of my life.  Like most mystery enthusiasts, I love curling up on the couch and visiting crime scenes with my favorite sleuth, amateur or otherwise. Reading transports me to worlds I would otherwise never experience and introduces me to people I would otherwise never meet. But all of that armchair sleuthing takes a toll on my body, particularly my back.
Yoga is the perfect antidote. If you practice yoga, you already know what I mean.  If not, here are a few reasons you should give it a try.
Five Key Reasons Mystery Readers Should Practice Yoga:
  1. Reading is a sedentary activity and bodies need movement. Bodies don’t like to be stationary for long periods of time. Yoga, even simple, gentle yoga, gives our systems much-needed movement.
  2. Most people read using very bad posture, which leads to over-stretched backs and tight chest, shoulder, psoas, and hamstring muscles. A well-conceived yoga practice can counteract all of it. Yoga in America is often thought of as stretching, but in reality, it’s much more than that. Yoga both strengthens and stretches, and it improves cardiovascular, respiratory, and digestive health.
  3. Yoga improves energy.  When I’m in the middle of a great read, I can stay up all night, which is great until I need to get up the next morning. Yoga, even more than caffeine, helps me feel alert and rested.  And if you prefer more suspenseful mysteries, the right breath practice can allow you to fall asleep, in spite of the psycho-killer lurking in the pages on your nightstand.
  4. Yoga promotes focus, which allows mystery readers to sort through clues, pay attention to subtle details, maybe even figure out whodunit well in advance of their favorite sleuths.
  5. Yoga helps readers live a longer, more pain-free life.  And if we live longer, we can devour more mysteries!
Did I convince you?  If so, here are some specifics.
Any yoga pose that helps counteract the effects of bad posture will be beneficial for readers.  Back bends counteract readers’ C-shaped, slumped posture by opening the fronts of the shoulders, stretching the fronts of the hips, and strengthening the upper and lower back. Warrior I, Cobra, and Locust are great poses to start with.
I published an article about yoga poses for better posture at http://www.wholelifeyoga.com/blog/yoga-poses-for-better-posture-response-to-a-student-question-2/ The photos are especially helpful and a great place to start.
Just ask Kate Davidson, the yoga teacher/sleuth in my newest mystery, A Killer Retreat. Yoga is good for everybody. Readers, writers—even yoga studio owners with overly tight hamstrings and embarrassingly bad tempers. Bella, her unruly German shepherd agrees.  Nothing beats Downward Facing Dog to prepare a guard-dog’s body for chasing away evil yoga student intruders.
In A Killer Retreat, you will be introduced to yoga principles, breath work, even a pose here and there.  Most importantly, you and Kate will solve a murder and hopefully have a few laughs along the way.  You’ll also travel to the beautiful Elysian Springs Resort on Orcas Island and meet some crazy new characters, including a goat lawyer!
I hope you read my series and love it. And remember, practice a few yoga poses between chapters!
