Book Tour & Giveaway ~ My Date From Hell by Tellulah Darling

Displaying My Date from Hell banner.png

My Date From Hell (The Blooming Goddess Trilogy, #2)
Release Date: 10/31/13

Summary from Goodreads:

Sophie Bloom’s junior year has been a bit of a train wreck. After the world’s greatest kiss re-awakened Sophie’s true identity as Persephone (Goddess of Spring and Savior of Humanity), she fought her dragon-lady guidance counselor to the death, navigated mean girl Bethany’s bitchy troublemaking, and dealt with the betrayal of her backstabbing ex, Kai (sexy Prince of Darkness). You’d think a girl could catch a break.

Yeah, right.

With Zeus stepping things up, it’s vital that Sophie retrieve Persephone’s memories and discover the location of the ritual to stop Zeus and Hades. So when Aphrodite strikes a deal that can unlock Sophie’s pre-mortal past, what choice does the teen goddess have but to accept?

The mission: stop media mogul Hermes from turning Bethany into a global mega-celebrity. The catch? Aphrodite partners Sophie and Kai to work together … and treat this suicide mission as a date. Which could work out for Sophie’s plan to force Kai to admit his feelings for her–if she doesn’t kill him first.

Add to that the fact that BFF Theo’s love life and other BFF Hannah’s actual life are in Sophie’s hands, and suddenly being a teenager—even a godlike one—seems a bit like … well, hell. Whatever happened to dinner and a movie?

The YA romantic comedy/Greek mythology fireworks continue to fly inMy Date From Hell. Love meets comedy with a whole lot of sass in book two of this teen fantasy romance series. Breaking up is easy; dating is deadly.

What Inspires You, Tellulah?  Hot men and bad boys and guys that are swoony Smart chicks and smart mouths that don't fall too soony Banter and sly looks you hope they don't see  This is just some of what inspires me  Flirting and friendships and having that first date Falling so hard and then finding your soul mate Sneak attack kisses that amp a degree This is just some of what inspires me  Sizzle and fire and sexy behaviour Playing it cool with a smooth "see you later" Misunderstandings that you don't foresee This is just some of what inspires me  So freaked is he So scared is she Will my story mend I simply remember what inspires me And then it's true love, in the end **And that, darlings, is both what inspires me and why I am not a famous lyricist on Broadway. All kidding aside, I write about love and so every human interaction regarding love (and hate) fascinates and inspires me. It doesnʼt have to be romantic relationships either. Iʼm inspired by great friendships, and sometimes, why those friendships become more, but other times how perfect they are as is.  My inspiration comes from watching teens laugh on the bus, parents and kids locked in sullen silence, or elderly couples holding hands at the beach. If Iʼm not eavesdropping on actual people, Iʼm losing myself in fictional characters because I find inspiration in other peopleʼs stories – both excellence I want to try to attain and ways in which I absolutely do not want to spin my tales. Iʼm inspired by humour in the midst of sadness and moments of drama when itʼs been so comedic up until now. Iʼve drawn inspiration from literal situations Iʼve lived and thematic premises drawn from the human condition. And the fun of being inspired by people and life and love and hate is that sometimes what I'm most judgemental about or find the most idiotic, turns out to give me my favourite story and character moments.   Hope you enjoyed this and thanks for having me! Tellulah

A Date of Godlike Proportions (The Blooming Goddess Trilogy, #2.5)
Release Date: 12/20/13

Summary from Goodreads:

There’s bound to be pressure when it takes 2500 years to get to a second date. Which is exactly why Theo Rockman, a.k.a. Prometheus, would rather not go. With his best friend gravely injured and the fate of humanity still on the line, Theo has all sorts of creative excuses to avoid dating swoon-worthy god and love of his life, Hephaestus.

YA romantic comedy gets an epic mythological twist in the free (at select retailers) short story A Date of Godlike Proportions (The Blooming Goddess Trilogy Book 2.5). Being human hasn’t killed Theo, but this date just might.

Blog Tour Spotlight & Giveaway ~ Mooncalf by Linda Zern

Mooncalf cover
Mooncalf by Linda Zern

Over Olympia and Leah's heads, Americans race the Russians to the moon; on their television sets young men fight and struggle in the mud of Viet Nam; and America holds its breath between heartbreaking tragedies.

But on Miss Brinker's school bus, in the seat with the rip in the green plastic, Olympia and Leah fall in love, the way children do: immediately, completely, and without knowing or caring why they shouldn't. Olympia Crooms, with her happy hair, and Leah Breck, with her silly red dog, are two smart girls.

Olympia's father works other men's orange groves in rural Central Florida and tells his daughter that school is the best way to reach for the stars. Leah's father moves his family from the Space Coast to the country where she and her brother can climb orange trees, imagine lions in the tall grass, and learn to feed baby cows milk from a bottle.

At Evegan Elementary, two smart girls find each other and have to decide if they will learn the hardest lessons of all: the false traditions of their fathers.

Excerpt

The bus engine growled, loud enough to rattle the windows.

“Hey! There’s a big, red monkey riding on the roof of that car,” a girl sitting behind Leah hollered.

“No, it’s a dog—a big, red dog. And it’s surfing right up on top of that roof.” Across the aisle from Leah, a boy with big horse teeth pointed, screaming with laughter.

“That is so far out and gross!” someone else said.

“Hey, green sweater girl!” One of the big kids in the back of the bus started yelling at one of the little kids sitting in the front of the bus.

Leah was one of the kids sitting in the front of the bus, and she was little.

She did not turn around. He couldn’t be yelling at her, not on her first day at a new school. He’s not. It was a mistake. Leah looked down at her green sweater and started to count the pearl buttons. Why couldn’t she be a turtle with no ears and disappear inside her green sweater shell? It was probably pretty quiet inside a turtle’s shell.

Praise for Mooncalf

"One of the most admirable things about Mooncalf is that it's difficult to find a single wasted word in the entire book. Granted the book is short; yet, it is very rare to find a book which treats with such delicacy the choosing of each word--each adjective, verb, and noun. Themes, motifs, and symbols are everywhere throughout Mooncalf, and most impressive of all none of it is discarded. Motifs and themes exist in big and small circles in Mooncalf, circling back in on themselves as well as intertwining themselves with the plot and the characters that inhabit it. And those motifs and themes, those messages and those symbols, don't go away once you've finished the book. They stick with you. It's hard to forget Mooncalf." ~ The Thousander Club

"I never expected to be moved to tears by a book meant for adolescents. Buy it, read it, share it, and let yourself be changed by it." ~Lacey Smith

I

I hurried to gather the last of my stuff, but Gavin was determined to do this…again. Before I could zip up my suitcase, he was at my bedroom door. “You really sure you want to do this, Scarlett?”

“Gavin, we’ve already been through this,” I told him.

He ran his hands through his hair and said, “I still don’t know why Dad talked you into going back to Red Ridge with him and Drew. This is some serious shit. You realize that, right?”

“Of course I realize this is serious. That’s why I agreed to go. If we don’t do this, our entire pack will suffer,” I reminded him.

“Don’t you think I know that? But come on, you seriously don’t have a problem with our own father asking you to hook up with a guy in order to screw with his head? I don’t know how else to say this, but it kinda sounds like he’s whoring you out.”

Whoring me out?! He crossed a line with that one. I pushed Gavin toward the door, but he hardly budged, which made me even angrier. “Did you just call me a whore? Are you fucking kidding me right now? He is not whoring me out! How dare you—”

Synopsis

From debut author, Traci Andrighetti, comes a tale of murder, mayhem, and meddling Sicilian grandmas…

Francesca “Franki” Amato is a tough-talking rookie cop in Austin, Texas—until an unfortunate 911 call involving her boyfriend, Vince, and a German female wrestler convinces her once and for all that she just isn’t cut out for a life on the police force. So Franki makes the snap decision to move to New Orleans to work at her friend Veronica’s detective agency, Private Chicks, Inc. But Franki’s hopes for a more stable life are soon dashed when Private Chicks is hired by the prime suspect in a murder case to find out what really happened to a beautiful young boutique manager who was found strangled to death with a cheap yellow scarf. When she’s not investigating, Franki is hoping to seduce handsome bank executive Bradley Hartmann, but most of her time is spent dodging date offers from a string of “good Italian boys”—make that not-so-good aging Italian men—that her meddlesome Sicilian grandma has recruited as marriage candidates. As Mardi Gras approaches and the mystery of the murdered shop girl gets more complicated, Franki must decipher the odd ramblings of a Voodoo priestess to solve both the murder and the mystery of her own love life.

About This Author

Traci Andrighetti is the author of the Franki Amato mystery series. In her previous life, she was an award-winning literary translator and a Lecturer of Italian at the University of Texas at Austin, where she earned a PhD in Applied Linguistics. But then she got wise and ditched that academic stuff for a life of crime–writing, that is.

If she’s not hard at work on her next novel, Traci is probably watching her favorite Italian soap opera, eating Tex Mex or sampling fruity cocktails, and maybe all at the same time. She lives in Austin with her husband, young son (who desperately wants to be in one of her books) and three treat-addicted dogs.

Interview

What is your favorite genre to read/write?
I have always loved reading mysteries. I got addicted to them after stumbling across my aunt's old Nancy Drew books at my grandmother's house when I was around 10 or so.

As far as writing goes, from the moment I sat down to write Limoncello Yellow, my first novel, I knew it had to be a lighthearted mystery. I love to laugh and joke around, so it just didn't make sense for me to write something dark.

How, when and why did you first start writing?
Ha! Well, I actually wrote my first mystery with my cousin when I was twelve (I think it was a whopping ten pages in length). Like so many little girls, I was inspired by all those Nancy Drews I'd read. Fortunately, the not-so-intriguingly titled The Mystery of the Driftwood did not survive my childhood.

Anyway, I didn't write a single line of fiction again until last year. I wrote various academic and magazine articles in the meantime, but nothing fun. I think it was because I didn't know I could write fiction—at least, not as an adult. But that all changed the day I discovered Italian author Gabriela Genisi's mystery series (I read in Italian, too) featuring a sexy police inspector obsessed with fruit. There was just something about Genisi's books that convinced me I could write my own mysteries. So, I enrolled in an online Chick Lit writing class, and the Franki Amato Mystery series was born.

Who is your favorite character in your book and why?
Of course, I love Franki. I mean, her last name, "Amato," is Italian for "loved!" But my favorite character is probably Glenda O'Brien, whose stage name is Lorraine Lamour. Because she's an aging ex-stripper, I can make her say the most outrageous things. Plus, I like the fact that Glenda isn't what she seems on the surface. If you look past the stripper facade, you see that she's actually a smart, savvy businesswoman. She's just a little rough around the edges, that's all.

How long did it take you to write Limoncello Yellow?
I have a day job (huge sigh), so it took about 10 months from start to finish. I wrote anywhere and everywhere I could: in bed, on airplanes, in cars, at my parents' house, in coffee shops, and even in a couple of New Orleans bars! That's not the complete list, either.

What I've learned from this whole experience is that the spare time–approach to writing is probably the best for me because it gives me time to mull over ideas and scenes in my head. That way, when I finally get to sit down in front of my computer, I'm always ready and excited to write.

Is yellow your favorite color? If not, then what color is your favorite and why?
Yellow has special significance for me because I associate it with success and because the Italian word for yellow (giallo) is used to mean "mystery" (the first mystery novels published in Italy had yellow covers). But, my favorite color has always been purple. For me, purple means passion, moodiness, and, yes, mystery. And it doesn't hurt that it's the color of royalty, because I'm an unabashed royal watcher!

If you could sum your main character into five words, what would they be?
Smart, spunky, superstitious and Italian! (I counted "and" as a word because, after all, I'm a writer.)

Book Synopsis

Ted Milo, until recently the Charles Dickens of obit writers, is dislodged from his carefree new life by a bizarre collision of homicides and hemorrhoids in the fancy Los Angeles suburb of Friendly Lake. Actually…not so friendly, Ted and his wife, Liv, soon discover.

Ted has ditched his long newspaper career to embrace the nouveau riche life he’d always ridiculed after inheriting a fortune from a distant relative. He is floating blissfully, contemplating the fruits of wealth, little on his fiftyish mind beyond bladder control, when a visit to a physician turns him into a sleuth with cold-blooded murders to solve.

“You’re doing this why, because the Navy SEALS aren’t hiring?” chides Liv when learning she’s now married to Sam Spade. “And your dream of playing center field for the Dodgers—dashed?”

Every gumshoe requires a “tomato,” though, and Liv is Ted’s when bodies hit the slab in this twisty mystery that exposes the warty underside of seemingly tranquil suburbia.
