Synopsis
Private investigator Jane Ronson suffers from oppositional defiant disorder, the uncontrollable urge to punch first then ask questions later. When a rabbi with a shady past offers her a bag of cash to spy on a rival rabbi, Jane jumps at the chance to make what think will be easy money. To get her cash, Jane impersonates an Orthodox Jewish woman and infiltrates a black market kidney ring in Baltimore’s Orthodox community. Between Russian gangsters and double crosses, Jane is number one on everyone’s hit list. To save her life, she forms an alliance with a religious woman and confronts a family.

Interview
Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
Seeing my books displayed in Barnes & Noble’s “favorite”
section. I had to convince my friends that I didn’t secretly put the books
there! I was also interviewed on the local NPR station. I’m still waiting for
Laura Lippmann to ask me over for coffee--that would really be a highlight.
What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
First drafts don’t have to be perfect. The temptation to
self-edit and self-critique is a writer’s worst knee-jerk reflex. Just get
something down then edit it later.
A word about reviews--good and bad. In the digital age is too
easy for everyone to be critic (and an anonymous one at that). Be prepared for
bad reviews. It doesn’t mean you’re not a good writer, it just means your work
didn’t resonate with someone. Even though nobody likes stinky reviews, if the
criticism is valid, you need to own up to it.
Which authors have influenced you most and how?
Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy helped me understand that
you can write a successful, compelling, and fantastic story that has major
flaws. If you’ve read The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo you know that there are
whole sections that are a chore to get through. But you don’t dwell on them
because the other 90% of the book is so darn good. I’m also a big fan of
Richard Price, Dennis Lehane, and Andre DuBus III—men who write terrific genre
fiction with an attitude.
What’s your favorite season/weather?
Summer solstice is the happiest time. The world is bathed in
endless light with just the tiniest chill of spring still in the air. Even
though the days get shorter after this crescendo, the whole luscious summer is
ahead of you.
What TV show/movie/book do you watch/read that you’d be
embarrassed to admit?
There are so many, must I pick just one? OK, now you’ll see
what a shallow person I really am....I devour People magazine while at the
dentist or in line at the supermarket. I developed a taste for gossip rags
early on. I remember reading Photoplay magazine in the 1960s while waiting for
my mother to get her hair done in a beehive at the hair salon in suburban New
Jersey.
Favorite smell?
I love smoky campfires. They remind me of when I lived in
Mexico and there was always a small wood fire being tended--usually with
something delicious cooking.
What is something people would be surprised to know about
you?
That I am a huge fan of heavy metal music and that I adore
Will Ferrell movies. Sometimes I think I am a 12-year-old boy trapped in a
55-year-old woman’s body.
Happiest moment in your life so far?
Hiking in the Canary Islands I met a goat shepherd. This took
place during a year I spend traveling solo halfway around the world. We chatted
about this and that as his flock milled around us. I felt incredibly peaceful
and at one with the world.
Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I am pecking away at the concluding novel in my Dog Park
series. After that I’ll got back to nonfiction. I want to write an expose about
doping during the 1984 summer Olympics. It’s an open secret that many of the
cyclists used blood boosting and other semi-legal techniques in the lead up and
during the Olympics. Believe me, it didn’t all start with Lance Armstrong!
