Missing Lily Tour

Missing Lily

“You don’t know who I am,” I whispered. He didn’t move—either away from me, or closer—and after an interminable moment, I stepped back and hurried out of the house.

He didn’t follow me as I fled into the night.

Lylin was not used to being alone—much less alone, hurt, and lost. So when she is separated from her guard and forced to abandon her horse, she counts herself lucky to stumble upon a manor house. Still frightened by those who chased her into the night, she keeps her identity a secret, calling herself Lily as she accepts the help of kind servants, and the compassion of Lord Fallon. When they fall into an easy friendship, she wonders if her secrecy was too hasty. However, as she gets to know the manor and its residents, Lylin discovers that she’s not the only one hiding secrets, and it may be a very good thing that her host doesn’t know her true identity as a member of the royal family.

Just as I started to relax, the sound of voices made my eyes pop open, and I sat up, forcing my breathing to quiet. The doors at the other end of the stables slid open and someone entered, carrying a lamp and shaking water from their clothes.
“I’m not seein’ things, Lord Fallon. Someone is in here,” a voice whispered. I sat still, unable to move. The lamp shifted, casting two men in ominous shadow.
“I believe you, Giles. That’s why we’re here.” His Lordship sounded not at all concerned, as though he were merely humoring his hired man. He sounded more tired than anything.
“The lamp, Giles.” The light transferred to His Lordship’s hands, illuminating his face and leaving me astonished by his youth. He looked to be in his twenties, and I wondered how such a young gentleman held the title of Lord. “You’re sure it wasn’t an animal of some sort?” he asked as he took his first steps down the long line of stalls. He would find me soon enough, and yet this prospect didn’t terrify me as it had moments ago. Lord Fallon looked not at all frightening. He wore trousers, a loose fitting shirt that hung untucked, and a full-length coat that fell in languid folds from his shoulders. Water dripped from his rumpled hair, sliding down his face and into his well-trimmed facial hair.
“T’weren’t no animal, sir.”
“The horses aren’t agitated. They would be if someone threatening were about.”
When the light fell on me, Lord Fallon’s eyes widened. I tried to push myself to my feet, but he drew a sword that I had not realized was hanging at his side and pointed it at my throat. I fell back against the wall, crouching, my chest aching from the heavy beating of my heart.
“I don’t take kindly to vagrants on my property.” His fatigue had vanished. Now he looked menacing—terrifying.
My voice was barely audible as I forced a reply. “I’m not a vagrant, sir.”
His eyes narrowed in question. “Remove your hood.”
I raised my hand slowly and pushed the fabric back. His eyebrows raised, even more surprised by my appearance than by my voice. The sword lowered. “Giles, take her inside and put her in front of a fire. She’s freezing.” And with that, he walked away and I slumped back to the ground, numb with relief.

Author Annette K. Larsen

I was born in Utah, part of a crazy, fun family of nine. I grew up in Flagstaff, AZ and St. Louis, MO before striking out on my own college adventure in Virginia. I decided to try my hand at writing novels after I was married and living in Idaho. I write clean romance because it’s my favorite genre, but often difficult to find.

I have Charlotte BrontΓ« to thank for the courage to write novels. After being bombarded with assigned reading about women who justified abandoning either their families or their principles in the name of love, I had the great fortune of reading Jane Eyre. And that was it: finally, a heroine who understood that being moral and making the right choice was hard, and sometimes it hurt, but it was still worth it. After rereading it several years later, I realized that if I wanted more books to exist with the kinds of heroines I admired, then I might as well write a few myself. My books are about women who face hard choices, who face pain and rejection and often have to face the reality of sacrificing what they want for what is right. The consequences are often difficult or unpleasant, but in the end, doing what’s right will always be worth it.

I believe there is no substitute for good writing or good chocolate. Fortunately, one often leads to the other.

Book Blitz {Spotlight} Paradise Coast by Renee Novelle

Welcome to Naples, Florida! Where the beaches are perfect and every day is a vacation. But in this small town paradise that serves as a playground for the rich and elite, not everything is as beautiful as it first appears on the surface.

Offering an irreverent, and often sarcastic, glimpse into all the sexy scandals that go on behind closed doors, Paradise Coast, delves into the shadows of another way of life and proves that money doesn’t always buy happiness. Following five couples as they navigate their way through love, expectations and revenge, this story explores how different personalities react when faced with unsavory realizations about their current states of affairs.

Authors Note: This is not a romance. There are no alpha heroes who swoop in to save the day, or brooding bad boys who are easily converted into marriage material. If that’s what you’re searching for, then keep looking. Inside these pages is an unparalleled drama with many happy endings, but not so many happily-ever-afters. At least, not in the traditional sense... It’s a story about quick-witted women who find creative ways of empowering themselves and rising above their conflicting situations.

Kate opened her mouth to retort the subtle jab, but a loud knock at the door followed by the insistent ringing of the doorbell distracted her.
All three girls looked toward the front of the large house, then turned back toward each other with various levels of perplexity etched across their faces. “Are you expecting someone else?” Kate shook her head that she wasn’t, and all three got up from their seats and marched together in a tight little pack.
“Kate.” The muffled sound of a woman’s rough voice pierced through the barrier of the front door. “It’s Allie. I need to talk to you, open up.”
“Shit.” Kate cursed under her breath, and she looked at her friends helplessly for advice. They could only shrug silently though. Allie was an officer, they would have to let her in.
“I can see you through the glass in the door, Kate.” She sounded exhausted, and certainly less than thrilled to be standing outside. “I know you’re in there. Don’t make this harder than it has to be.”
Drawing a deep sigh, Kate reached with trembling fingers for the latch and drew back the door just enough that she could peek her head out. Allie, with her stocky build and rough exterior, offered an uncertain smile to Kate. Acquaintances since high school, the two girls had gone in very different directions with their life after graduation. Kate had pursued college and continued dating Matt, and together they’d become a prominent and respected couple in the upper social circles of Naples. Allie, on the other hand, had used her sporty personality to her benefit and had pursued the police academy after floundering for a couple of years. She’d worked her way up the ranks, and as Kate had heard through the Naples gossip chains, she had her sights set on becoming a Detective.
Which made since why she was standing there now, Kate thought to herself. She’d just wished the somewhat friendly face and official uniform could greet her under all together different circumstances.
“You know why I’m here, right Kate?”
“No.” Her voice was as small as the answer it squeaked out.
But Allie only rolled her eyes. “Okay.” She sighed. “Mind if I come in then?”
“What’s this about?” Berlin’s head popped up, and Allie smirked a little.
“Surprise, surprise.” She clucked to herself. “I should’ve known you’d be involved in this too.”
“I’m not involved in anything.” She put her hands up in defense. “But do you have a warrant?”
“Ha! You haven’t changed at all.” Allie was shaking her head, then turned all her focus back to Kate. “I’m not searching for anything, so I really don’t need one. Can we all just talk like civilized people?”
Kate opened her mouth to answer, but Berlin interjected on her behalf. “Depends on what you want to talk to her about.”
“You gonna let her talk for herself?” Allie’s eyebrows arched high with the question and it was becoming clear her patience was coming to an end.
“Kate is very rattled right now.” Berlin sounded more like her mother than herself as she explained. “I’m trying to give her moral support.”
“Well, now I can explain that if you want. But do you really want me to do that out here where all the neighbors could overhear?” She motioned around at the quiet neighborhood, but Kate knew Naples could be tricky. It might not look like anyone was around, but it was still early in the day and the sun was bright. Sure enough as soon as Allie started talking, someone would walk by and overhear them. Then the gossip would spread like wildfire and it wouldn’t be long before the entire town knew. If they didn’t know already, that is...
Finally relenting, Kate opened the door enough for Allie to cross through, then looked around to make sure no one had seen her enter before closing it and locking it again.
Allie and Shauna nodded heads in greeting as Kate ushered them into the dining room where they all took a seat around the modern setting. “Where’s Matt?” She continued to inquire, looking around a bit as though he might pop out from behind one of the large pieces of art that hung on the walls.
“Out.” Kate shrugged, her dejection still evident.
“Out where?”
“Drinking with his friends, I would imagine.” She sighed.
“Okay good.” She spun around, crossed her arms over her chest, and glared down her nose toward Kate. “You want to tell me what happened today?”
Kate made eye contact with Shauna and Berlin, but they had nothing to offer this time. “I don’t know what you mean?” It was hardly a convincing performance of ignorance.
“Come on now. The girl’s pressing charges on you.” Though Allie’s voice was firm, it was softened by sincere concern. “This isn’t like you, Kate. You’ve never once had a run in like this before. You’ve got to give me something. Tell me what happened.”
“Pressing charges?” The incredulous question forced Kate’s voice to rise more than one octave. “That bitch is pressing charges on me?”
Allie nodded calmly.
“Well, by all means let me tell you what happened then.” Flustered by the new idea, she began pacing and throwing her hands around as she related the story. “I went to the Matt’s office to surprise my boyfriend with lunch from his favorite restaurant. I wore the dress that he likes most, did my hair and makeup the way he likes it. I even wore his favorite damn perfume. So after I get all dolled up, just to please him, I show up to find out that he’s already having lunch. On top of a naked person!” Realizing her voice was growing louder than it should have, she took a second to bring it back down again. “So then I politely ushered her from the building and had a little conversation with Matt.”
“You politely ushered her out?” Allie’s skepticism was obvious.
But Kate simply nodded, affirming her version of the story. “What would you have done Allie, if your boyfriend had been eating sushi off a naked stranger and didn’t bother telling you about it? And what does one do with a naked sushi girl once the sushi has been eaten? Huh?” She allowed a lengthy pause for dramatic effect, then squinted her eyes daringly. “Think about it.”
Allie remained quiet, looking from face to face as she seemed to contemplate this. “I’ll tell her it’s in her best interest to drop the charges.”
“You do that.” A satisfied smile spread across Kate’s face as she ushered the officer out the door again.

Meet Layla McKelland:

Novelist (unpublished, but cut her some slack…seventeen is a bit early to despair),

Slightly neurotic introvert (Alright, let’s be honest…there’s no “slightly” about it),

International Woman of Mystery, and…

Okay, just scratch the bio.

The only real “mystery” in Layla’s life is why her father has never been on the scene.  Or why her mother drags Layla to a new coastal home every year.

Nothing about the latest hometown seems too newsworthy…until a routine day at the beach leaves Layla questioning whether she’s read one too many paranormal fantasy novels.  The plot thickens when a random guy claims to know things about her father—a bizarre claim he backs up with an equally impossible stunt.  And Layla soon finds herself on the wrong side of a mysterious attempted drowning…on her own kitchen floor.

When all is done, Layla will attest that fact is far stranger than fiction.  And nothing in real life is ever as transparent as it seems…Not even water.

Especially not water.

Excerpts from Aqua
by M.A. George

“Layla…Can you hear me?  Try to open your eyes, Layla.”

I recognize that voice—echoing from some faraway land—yet I can’t quite place it.  I’m fairly certain that it usually isn’t marked by an anxious quiver, one it’s seemingly trying to suppress.  I know it’s not Mom or Cora.  For one, Mom wouldn’t be making any effort to hide her maternal hysterics.  And though Aunt Cora can be a tad on the masculine side sometimes, she doesn’t actually sound like a guy.

“Layla…Please try to open your eyes.”  Definitely a guy…and since I don’t really know many of those, that narrows the list down pretty quickly.

A garbled groan oozes from my throat, as my head rolls to one side to cough out a gurgling breath.  I hear the scatter of dusty grit puffing away in the gust from my lungs, and I wrench my lids open to a heap of washed-up seaweed on a bed of sand.  I roll onto my back again, squinting against the glaring daylight.  A head moves in to eclipse the sun, its backlit face obscured by shadow.  The halo of short curls dances and sways in the breeze, a pleasant greeting filtering through the air in that familiar voice.

“Hey there…You sure can give a guy a heart attack, you know that?”  I can only respond with another groan, pressing my palms into the sand in an attempt to sit up.  “Whoa, whoa, whoa…Take it easy there.  Get your bearings first.”  Tristan’s hand gently presses my shoulder back down, and I flop backward like a ragdoll upon the sandy dune.

“Wh-what happened?” I stammer, clenching my eyes closed again, as the vivid remembrance of suffocation charges like a bull through my brain.  “How’d you get me out of the water?”

“You took care of that yourself,” he puffs out a relieved chuckle.  “We found you washed up face-down on the sand.  You must’ve pulled yourself to shore before you passed out.  I should’ve warned you to watch out for rip currents.”

“Yeah,” I cough out a sarcastic snort with a mumble under my breath.  “Rip currents.”  My gut reaction is to tell him I know what the hell a rip current is…and they don’t have elbows or hairy heads.  But then my thoughts flash to the spinning whirlpool that sucked me under, and along to the insanity that’s been polluting my brain lately.  Maybe yet another screw has come loose from my unhinged mind.  Best I just keep my mouth shut.

But wait a minute…

“We?”  I fight against Tristan’s cautioning advice and rise up to sitting.  “What do you mean ‘we’ found you washed up on the beach?  Who’re we?”

“She’s not one for expressing gratitude, is she?”  A shiver of goose bumps crawls over my skin at the taint of madness in that high-pitched snicker.

Pyke.

“You just get the hell away from me.”  Suddenly I’m scrambling to my knees, scurrying around behind Tristan and practically jumping piggy-back onto him, my pruny fingers digging into his bare shoulders.  I said I’m no coward; but apparently, I stand corrected.  I fish for more words but come up empty.  All I’ve got is the icy glare I’m aiming past Tristan’s shoulder, squaring Pyke’s face in my sights.

A knowing smirk contorts his bearded lips, and it strikes me that his grungy hair is as dry as the day we met.  He’s once again stark-dry from head to toe; and logic would lead one to conclude he had no possible hand in my near-drowning.  Too bad logic has forsaken me, ever since Pyke came barging into my life.

“Get far, far, far away from me…and then take a few extra steps, just for good measure.”  My eyes narrow a bit further as I struggle to rally the hard-edged conviction in my voice.  “Start.  Walking.  Now.”

He just crosses his arms defiantly with a swaggering tilt to his head, as another bray of laughter shakes his chest.  He lists a little closer, a taunting leer shadowed beneath his dark brow.  “And here I thought you were starting to warm up to me.”  I hadn’t noticed from a distance just how deep purple those circles under his eyes are…perhaps because they weren’t there until I jammed my thumb into his eye sockets.

I fix him in my searing glare with a low snarl.  “I’d sooner warm up to Satan.”

“Well, of course…”  A wicked smile lights his eyes.  “He has Hellfire and whatnot at his disposal.”

“Enough, Pyke,” Tristan shuts him down with a sharp reprimand.  “She’s not exactly having the best day…Now’s not the time for games.”

I silently thank Tristan with a subtle squeeze of his shoulder, his sun-baked skin a stark contrast to my clammy hands.  All this talk about warming up to people, and in fact I’m chilled to the core.  There’s an unnerving quiet while Pyke debates how much my torment is worth to him.  I realize I’ve been holding my breath when he turns with a shrug to head for the water.  A shudder rolls through me as I draw in a lungful through chattering teeth.

“You’re shaking,” Tristan’s brow furrows as he turns to look over his shoulder.  “Are you cold?”

“No,” I absently shake my head, pulling my trembling fingers from his back.  “At least I don’t think so.”  The truth is, sheer terror and bone-chilling cold bring on a remarkably similar shiver.  Judging from the fact that it’s at least a hundred degrees out today, I’m fairly certain it’s mainly terror behind my quivering limbs.

“We should get you to the hospital,” he turns and puts his arm around my waist for support.  “Just to make sure you’re okay.”

“I’m fine,” I shake my head.  “I just want to go home.”

“Are you sure?”  He raises a questioning eyebrow, and I give an insistent nod.  “Well, you’re not driving,” he contends.  “We’ll go in my car.”  Funny how his voice really deepens when he’s being especially serious.

I reluctantly concede with a nod.  Truth be told, I’m far from fit for driving right now.  Physically, I’m pretty sure I’m coming around and will be fine.  My state of mind is another story.  And as if I haven’t had enough mental torment for the week, I make the mistake of looking back over my shoulder.  I can’t seem to stop myself from checking for Pyke.  Knowing he’s somewhere behind me just gives me that hair-raising feeling of being followed.  Only he’s definitely not tailing us…He’s wading out into the waves, glancing all around as though he’s searching for something.  He seems to catch sight of whatever it is he’s seeking; and he springs from the seabed, arching forward into a dive with arms in a point overhead.

But of course, nothing with Pyke can end that simply.

Just before he enters the water—his pointed hands not quite yet touching the surface—he becomes water, his tattooed arms liquefying to a transparent spray.  The transformation to a flowing crystal-clear stream spreads in a swift cascade from his head to his toes.  What was formerly his diving body is suddenly an arcing wave, splashing into the sea to join up with the ripples dancing across the surface.

By this point, I don’t think there’s any color left to drain out of my face.

I look to Tristan with saucer eyes, my arm still looped over his shoulder as he guides me back toward the parking area.  I only see the back of his turned head…He’s been looking back too.  As his face slowly rotates back toward me, I search for any signs of shock, dismay, or an impending freakout in his eyes.  But I find nothing of the sort.  He flashes a polished smile, that crooked tooth practically mocking me with its complete lack of alarm.  It’s no use asking if he saw anything strange…Whatever he saw, he clearly isn’t rattled by it (most likely because—like the rest of the sane world—he saw nothing out of the ordinary).

“You think you can make it the whole way?” His voice knocks me out of my stupor.  “Maybe I should run ahead and bring the car back this way.”  I come to the awkward realization that he’s practically lugging me like a sack of potatoes, with absolutely no help from the dangling pair of useless rubber bands I call my legs.

“I can make it,” I straighten up, willing the jelly in my bones to support my weight.  I’m not about to let him walk off and leave me here, with his psycho-murderer-slash-shapeshifter buddy still skulking somewhere out there in the waves.  I set my sights on the Jeep Cherokee in the distance, focusing on making one footprint in the sand after another.  Those prickly lights make an appearance in my fading peripheral vision again, my ears popping with a muffled hum beginning to drown out the seagulls.  I try to be as casual as possible, muttering a garbled suggestion, “Maybe I should go ahead and give you directions to my house now…Just in case I pass out again.”

At that, Tristan scoops me up off my feet, ignoring my grumbling objections.  I’m ashamed to say he was slowed down more by my pitiful attempt at walking than by the full weight of my body in his arms.  “If you pass out again, I won’t need any directions…I’m remarkably familiar with the route to the nearest emergency room.”

I’d believe his claim outright (there are only so many streets in this town to begin with), but I have the feeling he’s more familiar with the local emergency room than your average citizen.  I’d never really noticed the jagged scar trailing down the side of his scalp beneath the curls—curving behind his left ear and ending about halfway down the back of his neck—probably because I haven’t been quite this up-close-and-personal before.  It’s way too crooked to be a surgical scar, and it makes the one above his eyebrow look like a paper cut.  I imagine there’s probably a captivatingly grisly story to go with it; but frankly I couldn’t have less interest in asking about it right now.

I’ve had all the excitement I can handle for one day.

Interview

Welcome to Kelly P’s Blog!
Thanks, Kelly!  Thrilled to be here.
How did you come up with the title of your book?
I love single-word titles, so I always start the brainstorming with that in mind.  I wanted Aqua’s title to evoke visions of water—considering the whole premise centers around it—without being too bland.  When I’m in the process of picking a title, I always keep Goodreads or Amazon open in my browser.  That way, I can do a quick search and make sure it’s not already a common title, before getting too attached.
Who designed the cover of your book?
Yours Truly.  I love the whole experience of creating a book, and that includes the cover design.  Granted, I went through about twenty permutations before I finally settled on the cover you see now.
How long did it take you to write this book?
About seven or eight months from start to finish.  Although, there were a few sizeable gaps in there, where I wasn’t all that productive.  Life just kept throwing me too many other things that sucked up my time.  I need a clone!
How do you cope with writer’s block?
One of the benefits of doing my own cover design, website design, et cetera is that I can always find something to work on if the story isn’t moving along in my head that day.  I also try to jot down little snippets of dialogue or plot ideas for further ahead in the story, which sometimes help me see how to get from point A to point B.
Do you have a favorite line or quote in this book?
Hmm…I think I’ll go with one of the early encounters between Layla and Pyke.  Nobody can jab back and forth quite like those two.  When Pyke suggests that Layla is finally starting to warm up to him, she replies that she’d sooner warm up to Satan.  Pyke’s comeback:
“Well, of course…”  A wicked smile lights his eyes.  “He has Hellfire and whatnot at his disposal.”
What inspired you to write this book?
I was still working on my Proximity series at the time; but I kept getting these random ideas about a teenage girl who moves around the country—always living on the beach—and discovers a hidden connection between her family and the water.
Describe the cover in 10 words or less.
A splashy wave…possibly something else in disguise.
If you could sum your main character into five words, what would they be?
Layla is quirky, bookish, bold, witty, and determined.
If your book was made into a TV series or Movie, which actors would you like to see playing your characters?
Wow, this is always such a challenging question.  I’d be thrilled to see Aqua on the screen; but I have a heck of a time visualizing actors to step into a character’s identity.  I would love to find someone who looks like Layla, thinks like Layla, shares her love of chicken enchiladas and all things bookish, walks like her, cracks cynical jokes like her, and possibly wears the same size shoes.  Ditto for Tristan…Only he’d be more of a spaghetti-and-meatballs fan, with a little less snark in his sense of humor.  Pyke’s just Pyke…So I’d have to hunt him down and harass him relentlessly, until he caves and agrees to take the role just to shut me up.
What are you working on right now?
I’m working on a new YA fantasy that involves alternate realities.  So much fun.  I’m also cooking up a sequel to Aqua.  So, yeah…I’ve got my hands full.  Life is good. J
Thanks for having me by for an interview, Kelly!  It was a pleasure to be here.
