Title: Stalking the Demon
Author: Ciara Ballintyne
Series: The Seven Circles of Hell #2

Six months ago, the disgraced wizard, Alloran, sacrificed his hand to rescue the woman he loves from his traitorous friend, Ladanyon. Despite saving the city from a demon, his reputation remains tarnished, and the council of wizards has penalised him severely for the practise of banned magic.

Now he learns his desperate efforts to stop Ladanyon led more to damnation than salvation. Finding a solution compels him to breach his sanctions and venture into forbidden places at risk of his life and freedom.

Alloran must choose between saving himself and everything he holds dear.

Book #1

Chapter 1

Collapse

Alloran rushed through the citadel halls heedless of the rich carpets crushed beneath his heavy boots. Gisayne hung limply in his arms, and her black hair trailed over his elbow. A few people watched him pass, but none offered assistance. Over the past six months, Gisayne collapsed often enough to blunt the urgency and the panic. The faces turning in his direction bore only mild curiosity, oblivious to the fact that this time was different.
Her chest barely rose and fell beneath the thin cream silk of her night gown and robe, and blue tinged the edges of her bee-stung lips. Seven hells, was she dying? As he raced onwards, he clutched her against him and her cold skin pressed against his. With no left hand, he had no way to check for a pulse. A choked-back scream of desperate frustration tightened his chest until it squeezed the breath out of his lungs.
While juggling Gisayne, he fumbled with the latch on the door to the citadel’s hospice. Damn his missing hand to the first hell. When the door finally gave, he shouldered it open and backed into a long room lined with starkly made beds. The few occupied by sick or injured had curtains drawn for privacy. Breidmar, dressed in the red-trimmed white robes of a citadel doctor, bustled over at their entrance.
Orange brows pinched with concern over her violet eyes. ‘Again?’
‘She’s…’ The lump in his throat choked him. He swallowed hard. ‘She’s hardly breathing.’
‘This way.’ Pointing to an empty bed, Breidmar called out and strode to a door at the far end. Before she crossed halfway back, an unfamiliar girl in acolyte’s white appeared in the doorway.
Alloran placed Gisayne on the bed with gentle care. Her slack body slid from his arms, her skin pale. When he let her go, her eyelids fluttered but did not open. Nausea knotted his gut. The last time she’d fainted, the recovery was quick. Now, she looked as if death hovered over her, waiting for the moment to snip the thread of her life.
As Breidmar began checking Gisayne’s vitals, she waved Alloran off. He hesitated. What would he do except wait, patient, and idle while Breidmar tried again to determine what illness affected her? She would try and fail, most likely.
‘Are you sure this is not the falling sickness? It’s supposed to get worse with each successive bout.’
‘She’s not got the right symptoms. No seizures,’ Breidmar responded in precise, clipped tones.
Alloran frowned. He wasn’t an idiot. ‘Then what? These collapses are getting more frequent and more severe! Seven hells take you, tell me. Whatever the illness, it can’t be too complicated for me to understand.’
With her severe lips curving down, she sniffed. ‘No amount of genius can assist you to comprehend a malady I cannot explain. While you’ve made any number of miraculous discoveries, you have no particular expertise in medical matters. Leave this to me.’
‘The title of doctor is reserved only for those who have studied in the citadel, and yet you say you don’t know? After all this time, you must have some notion.’ Wisps of his black hair hung about his face, torn free of their bindings in his haste. He pushed them back with a rough motion. When they slid back into disarray, he tore the leather thong free and began tying his hair back with short, sharp motions.
The doctor scowled at him. At her nod, the acolyte whipped the curtain around the bed in a rattle of rings. The cloth brushed Alloran’s nose; he jerked his head away.
A heartfelt sigh escaped his lips before he retreated to a waiting area that comprised a group of chairs. No, sitting still would be intolerable. He changed direction and paced the length of the room, passing the rows of identical empty beds. His boots echoed in the open space. Sterile and odourless air filled his nostrils.
Apparently, Breidmar shared the sentiments of many people in the citadel. Some blamed him solely for the demons that plagued the city of Ehsan six months earlier, and others accused him of working with the renegade wizard, Ladanyon. Although Alloran wasn’t subjected to a disciplinary hearing, the council’s public announcement that they were banning him from all forms of magic involving the hells only reinforced the blame.
Seven hells, the councillors banned him because some of them felt the same as the other citizens. Those residents who lost loved ones in the battle against Ladanyon’s first-circle demon were the most damning. Councillor Valgon’s wife died, and he made no bones about believing Alloran to be a public menace. I just can’t prove it, was what he said.

Ciara Ballintyne was born in 1981 in Sydney, Australia, where she lives with her husband, two daughters, one masochistic cat, and one cat with a god complex. She holds degrees in law and accounting, and has been a practising financial services lawyer since 2004. She is both an idealist and a cynic.

She started reading epic fantasy at the age of nine, when she kidnapped Castle of Wizardry by David Eddings from her father. Another two years passed before she began her first attempts at the craft of writing. Confronting the Demon is her debut book.

She enjoys horse-riding, and speculation about taking over the world. If she could choose to be anything it would be a dragon, but instead she shares more in common with Dr. Gregory House of House. M.D.

Book Release Blast ~ Rehab is for Witches Anthology by Six Authors

Rehab is for Witches
Anthology
Various Authors
Published By- SideStreet Cookie Publishing
Publication Date- October 31st, 2014

Welcome to Little Raven: an unsullied, beautiful woodland hamlet in the heart of the Midwest. The sort of place where furry creatures romp about and spend their days bursting into song.
Actually, that’s a giant pack of lies.

Little Raven is a town…for witches.
And some of those witches might have bent the rules. A teensy bit. When six magical miscreants dabble with black magic, they end up together at Incantations, the town’s rehab center for witches gone awry. It’s a slap on the wrist for naughty witches. Pretty much a daycare center so they don’t wander off and start turning people into newts on a whim. Each witch must work through her addiction to black magic, and follow the tenets designed to lead them back to the path of the straight and narrow, as boring as that sounds. Even if following the tenets sucks worse than a group round of kum-bay-ya. Which sucks. Horribly.
We will admit we are powerless over magic—that our lives have become unmanageable.

We will make a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of the Goddess as we understand Her.

We will make a searching and fearless moral and magical inventory of ourselves.

We will admit to the Goddess, to ourselves, and to another being the exact nature of our magical wrongs.

We will make a list of all persons or beings we have harmed, and become willing to make amends to them all.

We will make direct amends to such beings whenever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

We are entirely ready to bow before the Goddess and have Her remove all our defect of character, even at the risk of being entirely stripped of our magic.
But this is just the start. There’s something rotten in Little Raven, something that seeks to take all the magic it can, and devour the inhabitants in the process. It will take the strength and power of all the witches to defeat the darkness seeping into their town, beat it back, and be rid of it forever…and maybe just make it through rehab while they’re saving the world.

Excerpt

Even though she looked like she had crawled her way out of hell, Peyton always looked beautiful to me. I was happy for the distraction.

“How can you look like such a train wreck to the rest of the world but so irresistible to me?” I asked, breaking into a wide grin.

“Wow, you are such a romantic…” Peyton rolled her eyes before an unsteady look took over her face. Quickly, she threw her hand over her mouth in an attempt to hold it together. “I’m going to be sick!” She barely got the words out before she raced off of her bed and into the adjoining bathroom, not bothering to close the door behind her.

I felt terrible for her. Even though being around someone puking was not ideal and quite nauseating, I had a strong stomach. Without waiting for any instruction for her, I joined Peyton in the bathroom, scooping up her long hair from her face and holding it back as she released the remnants of her unsettled stomach. “I should get a boyfriend of the year award for this,” I joked lightly from behind her.

Although she wasn’t facing me, I could still feel a smile playing across her lips. She ripped off a couple of squares of toilet paper, wiping her mouth. After flushing the toilet, she fell against the wall of the bathroom, weak and tired. “I feel terrible.”

“I know,” I replied in a soothing voice, rubbing her shoulder gently with my hand. “Is your stomach feeling settled? Did you want to get back into your bed?”

“I feel like World War Three is happening in there,” Peyton said, closing her eyes lightly.

“I’m sorry babe.” Luckily for me, I rarely ever got sick, but that didn’t mean I couldn’t sympathize with her. “Here, let’s get you back into your bed.” I scooped up her weak frame and carried her the few feet to her full-sized bed, softly laying her down onto her pillows. “Do you want the covers on you?”

She shook her head yes as I pulled them over her body which was now facing away from me. I kissed the top of her head, turning to exit her room.

“Where are you going?” A small voice rose out of her, her body still facing the opposite direction.

“I’m not leaving, I promise. I’m going downstairs to get you a puke bowl.” See what I said? Best boyfriend ever…

Reading: A Love Story in Three Acts

Act One: The Early Years

As a child, my older sister read picture books to me until I fell asleep. Our nightly sessions introduced ranged from Goodnight Moon and The Runaway Bunny to The Little House and The Tale of Peter Rabbit. They also inspired a love of storytelling, an appreciation for creativity and the limitless reach of a stimulated imagination. The selection of books may have also explained George and Charlie, the pet rabbits that joined my family when I was eight.

Act Two: The Middle Years

From the age of 12 until I was a thirtysomething copywriter working in New York, I read Kurt Vonnegut and Joan Didion and John Cheever. Between the wacky humor of Vonnegut, the spare prose of Didion and the gin-soaked suburban brilliance of Cheever, my tastes during those years were diverse and a long way from where they are today. But I learned a lot from those three writers—as well as countless others through the years—and their work continues to inspire me on a daily basis.

Act Three: The Years of Mystery & Crime

One blustery winter afternoon, I visited my favorite bookstore on Fifty-seventh Street in Manhattan. I wandered through the aisles, idly examining book covers and jacket copy until I landed in the mystery section. I’d heard of Robert B. Parker and remembered watching Spenser for Hire, the TV series with Robert Ulrich. But I hadn’t yet read any of Parker’s novels about the witty Boston PI. That day, I picked up a copy of Crimson Joy, the 15th novel in the Spenser series. I tucked it under my arm, started reading it on the subway downtown and knew that I’d found a new friend. Over the following years, I read all of Parker’s Spenser novels as well as his Jesse Stone books and the Western series that featured maverick lawmen Virgil Cole and Everett Hitch.

That moment of happenstance in the mystery section changed the arc of my life as a reader. Since then, I’ve spent countless hours enjoying books by both award-winning and renowned authors as well as many self-published independent writers. Through their books, I’ve explored distant parts of the world, traveled through time and expanded my appreciation for different cultures. I’ve also learned about countless occupations held by amateur sleuths, explored new cuisines showcased in culinary mysteries and deepened my appreciation for numerous regions of the country through the impeccable local flavor captured by some truly talented writers.

In the early days, my love of mystery and crime was confined to books. But it’s now spilled over into movies and television programs. I’m hooked on many of the celebrated series like CSI, NCIS, Criminal Minds and Law & Order. And I’ve really enjoyed newer offerings such as Sherlock, True Detective, Broadchurch and The Killing. As of this writing, I’ve also enjoyed the first few episodes of The Mysteries of Laura, the new TV series with Debra Messing, as well as Gotham, the innovative series featuring characters from DC Comics’ Batman franchise.

The variety of these programs is mirrored by the diversity of mystery novels and crime titles that you can find today. The genre now includes books that are funny, gripping, disturbing, educational and inspiring. Like cats and dogs? There are numerous mysteries that involve four-legged sleuths. One of my favorites is the Chet and Bernie series by Spencer Quinn. Want to learn more about sleuthing in Elizabethan England? Check out Peter Tonkin’s A Head for Murder. Have an appetite for macaroons, crime and the beauty of Paris? Place an order for one of the tasty selections in Harper Lin’s Patisserie series.

Like any great love affair, my affection for books continues to deepen through the years. I relish spending time with old favorites just as much as I enjoy discovering debut novels by emerging authors. Now that I’ve recently launched the first books in my new humorous cozy series—Handcuffs & High Heels and Death by Donut—I have even greater appreciation and respect for the writers who have entertained and inspired me since those long ago nights when I climbed into bed, put my head on the pillows and listened as my sister said, “In the great green room, there was a telephone. And a red balloon. And a picture of the cow jumping over the moon...”

Blurb/Synopsis

Blurb

Everyone comes into your life for a reason. And even though they may stay just long enough to break your heart, their ultimate purpose can last a lifetime.

Synopsis

They say everything happens for a reason, but try telling that to a young woman with a newly broken heart.

His PhD is in Hypocrisy…And Other Poems about My Crappy Ex-Boyfriend is a memoir of sorts; a collection of poems chronicling the ups and downs, differences and the dissolution of one of my key relationships. Despite our interracial backgrounds (I'm black, he's white & Palestinian) and inter-religious upbringings (he is Muslim to my Christian), I thought we could and would end up together. But that didn't happen. The assorted poems (some short, some funny, some angry) talk about the love, frustration, and heartbreak, and the whole reflection culminated in an unexpected life lesson that surfaced on 9/11.

Excerpts

A Rite of Passage March ‘00

How could he share himself with so many?

His number rising exponentially

in college when he cheated on his ex

Using it as a scapegoat to deal with his feelings

and as a means to hurt her,

while pleasing himself for the moment

Perhaps there was more to his promiscuity

Maybe the notches in his belt

made up for an insecurity

by filling as many holes as he could,

somehow he was filling the one in his soul

How else could you engage in the physical act of love

with someone you hate so much

that you cringe when they speak?

That you book it out of there

the very moment after you peaked?

But maybe his intent there

was to hurt and humiliate,

To take something precious from them

and after, why not sleep with her roommate?

Being with him doesn’t mean you’re special

It doesn’t mean he likes or cares for you either

It’s not a privilege, more like a rite of passage

Making me wonder, are things really different with me

or is it just my turn to be his piece of ass

FF excerpt graphic
He passed me and entered the hallway, directing me back the way I'd come. The house was silent, no sign of the woman that escorted me the first time.
When we reached the foyer he paused. “As much as I appreciate your concern, please do not follow me again, Nadya. It isn’t safe.”
“Safe? What do you mean?” From our close proximity I could see that the injury on his face had fully healed. I dropped my eyes to his chest, but there was no evidence of a bandage under his thin shirt. Without thinking I reached forward, more curious than I’d ever been, but he stepped deftly away and my hand grasped nothing but air.
“Goodnight,” he said, opening the door.
The rain had finally passed and I stepped out into the muggy night. I turned to say goodbye, but instead heard the loud snap of the solid wood door as it closed in my face.
