Chapter 1

We marched forward out of the protective tree line of the forest and into the open field; a wall of bodies, hands clasped moving with purpose toward the Troian Center. Even though we had the protection of Remi’s invisibility power, I still felt tense and exposed. My heart pounded with uncertainty as a cool wind rushed past and we picked up speed. I could barely feel the strange sensation of lightness that being invisible provided. My skin tingled, but it felt more like nerves than magic. The last time I’d been invisible the sensation had felt much more intense, which had me worried that maybe it wasn’t working right. The possibility that Remi wasn’t strong enough to stretch his power over all of us made me shutter with uneasiness. This was more people than he’d ever tried to share his power with before.

Daniel sighed as half of the girls led the way and the rest followed.

“He’s a prince?” Marlena asked.

Apparently, this explanation was not going to wait until he got Patrick back to his chambers. “No.” Daniel shook his head. “He’s an orphan the queen took in.”

A murmur went through the girls.

“So, he is a prince,” Bethany stated.

Daniel took a deep breath to keep from snapping at the women. “No,” he said again. “Although the queen may call him son and the prince claims him as a brother, he lacks the bloodline to be a royal.”

The women were quiet as they took this in.

Darkness met him as he pushed Patrick’s door open. “Why’s the fire out?” Daniel asked. He knew the man had been gone for most of the day, but there should still have been some embers left. The room was stone cold.

The girls were oddly silent.

“Never mind.” He turned towards the bed. He could relight the fire once he had put Patrick down.

Kathryn skirted around him to pull the covers back. “Wait.” She stopped as soon as she picked up the blanket.

Daniel paused as she reached her hand down to the mattress.

“This is wet.” She rubbed her fingers over the soggy bedding.

Daniel could hear the maidens behind him shuffling their feet. No wonder Patrick was up in the tower drinking. A castle full of upset women could ruin anyone’s day.

Excerpt from Awakened – Book 1 of the Gods and Guardians series by CJ Anderson

"It all happens so fast. Dru is calling my name and I look up toward the cliff. When I move my head I catch a glimpse of something in my peripheral vision; something big, something that makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up straight. It’s some sort of large and scary looking creature and it’s prowling straight toward me.

The creature is as large as a bear, but it has the body and head of a lion with something that looks like a goat rising out of its back and a long tail, at least six feet long, whipping around with the head of what looks to be a large, creepy venomous snake. My pulse quickens as if fear itself were trapping me and I’m incapacitated.

I think I must be either a) dreaming, b) crazy, or c) dead because then I see Dru flying through the air. What the hell? He is going to kill himself! What is he doing?

Dru slams into the monster; it flies through the air and then drops to the ground. As far as I can tell, with the exception of the snake, which is partially smashed beneath the body, the monster is knocked out. The snake head is making a high pitched hissing sound and it makes me feel sick to my stomach.

Then, Dru is right beside me holding me tight against him. Both of our hearts are pounding.

“Alayna! Alayna, luv, are you OK?” Dru asks, his voice uneasy.

I’m baffled. “Me? Am I OK? What about you? You just jumped, no flew, no, I don’t know what the hell you did but you just slammed into a...a …a…was that a chimera?!...and after jumping from that height, you just walked away!” I stammer.

“I know,” Dru says, “and I can explain. But first, I think we need to head back the way we came before our friend wakes up. She is going to be pissed off!”

He grabs my hand and we run. I’m fast, but it’s hard to maneuver through the woods with all the brush and vegetation, much of which is waist high.

We’re about a quarter mile from the motorcycle when we finally see the trail. Dru slows down for just a moment, looks around and grabs my hand. “Faster!” He yells. “It’s coming.”

I chance a quick glance behind us and see three enraged heads. One is roaring, one hissing, and one is making a terrible ear-deafening bleating sound. I run faster than I have ever run before, even faster than yesterday at the track. Adrenaline is rushing through my veins so quickly that it keeps me going.

We’re almost there but the creature is gaining on us. We can see the motorcycle at the bottom of the cliff. All we have to do is run down the hill and turn the corner and we will be home free."

About the Author

CJ Anderson has been obsessed with science fiction and fantasy for as long as she can remember. Star Wars, Superman and Transformers are among her earliest memories. But it was Madeline L’Engle’s book, A Wrinkle in Time, that first grabbed her attention as an elementary student to the genre in the world of books. She has been reading Young Adult, Science Fiction and Fantasy ever since!

Creating stories has been a life-long journey for CJ. As a young child she create stories to tell her imaginary friends. Later on in school, when she became bored during class, adventures in fairytale lands, were a common theme running wild in her imagination. It never really occurred to her to write them down, though, until she was older and taking a class on creativity. Once she started writing, she never wanted to stop. She says it’s one of the best decisions she’s ever made.

CJ has been teaching Gifted & Talented for six years and has been both encouraged and inspired by her students. She lives in Iowa with her husband, two beautiful daughters and two cats. When she isn’t writing, teaching or spending time with her family, you can find her working out, reading or fangirling, of course! The God Kissed: Awakened is her first novel and the first book in a planned trilogy.

Synopsis

This summer isn’t about dying. It’s about living. Jenna Traynor has been given her life back. After two years of chemo and missing out on college life, she is in remission. On leave from the military, Bobby Callahan needs one thing: a quiet beach to run and train so his leg will get strong enough for him to return to his post. For the past three years the only thing that made him get out of bed was the military. He’d joined the service to get away from sympathetic eyes and worried faces. He didn’t count on meeting a girl like Jenna whose thirst for life made him break out of the walls he’d so carefully constructed around himself. And once he realized she had his heart, he knew he never wanted to let her go. And then fate stepped in…

Excerpt

One thing I know for certain in this life is that I’ve never felt the way I do now.  I rest my head on Bobby’s shoulder as we lay naked together in my bed.  Neither one of us bother to reach for the sheet to cover our body.  What’s the purpose?  My skin is still slick with sweat from sex, but through the open window, I feel the cool breeze coming in from the ocean as night rolls in and the room darkens completely.  The only light in the room is the small slice of light coming in from the bathroom.  I didn’t realize until now that I’d forgotten to shut off the light earlier when I’d quickly changed.  Now that small slice provides the only light I need to see Bobby’s beautiful body.

I feel more than hear Bobby’s stomach rumble with hunger.  We’d taken care of another hunger that has me sated and unable to move.  He’d chosen me over food.  It’s stupid. Somehow, it brings me comfort.  I don’t know why.

“What’s this,” he asks, looking at my arm and rubbing at the trail of marks across my inner elbow that I know are there, but I can no longer see in the darkness.  “I have shitty veins,” I say, rubbing my other hand over the spot as if I had the power to wipe the marks away.  “I have some on my thigh too.”

“I noticed,” he says with a grin.

“I hate them.  They make me look like a junkie.”

“No, they don’t.”

I lift my head to look at his face.  “Don’t lie.”

“Okay, you look like a junkie.  But you’re not.”

“No, I’m a cancer survivor.  At least for now.”

With his fingers he lightly makes a circle around my breast, touching me just hard enough so it doesn’t tickle, but light enough to send shivers through my body.

“You’re beautiful,” he says softly.

I lift my gaze to look at him again.  He’s looking at my breasts.  “Are you talking to me or my tits?”
