AUTHOR BIO

Kat Nichols was born and raised in the suburbs of Chicago. The youngest of four children, she'd been known to play for hours with only a cardboard box for entertainment. Her imaginary friends had friends... and family... and even little cities to play in. As she grew older, she began to put some of these stories down on paper, rather than keeping them in her head.

Writing a novel had always been a dream for her, perhaps an item on her bucket list, but it wasn't until she joined a writing group with other aspiring writers that she finally got to work. When not writing, Kat is reading or driving her son to and from practices and wishing she was reading. It depends on the day.

Kat still lives in the suburbs of Chicago with her wonderful husband, their hilarious son and their sometimes adorable and sometimes annoying cat.

Interview with Kat Nichols

1. What is the Secret Societies Collection about?
The Secret Societies Collection is a planned series of books about how various supernatural groups interact with humans and each other in northwestern Illinois. Since the series covers multiple groups, each story is divided into two books or a Set. The first two books, Family Secrets and Deadly Secrets, are the Secrets Set and tell Sophia's story. Book three will move on to a new group and therefore will start a new Set. Each set can be read on its own, but as the characters’ lives intertwine with those you've already read, or those you may meet in the future, it's a good idea to read them in order.

2. What are you working on now?
Right now I'm working on two novels and a short story. The short story will be released to my newsletter followers in December and is a glimpse of Sophia’s first Christmas in Illinois. This comes after Deadly Secrets in the timeline. I’m also working hard on book three in the collection. Tentatively titled, Fool Me Once, it tells the story of Morgan, who is 16 years old and completely oblivious to anything supernatural. Her world is about to be rocked when not one, but two new guys enroll in her school and introduce her to both glamour and danger. I’m not a fan of love triangles, but this book will have a very different take on them which I hope people enjoy!

3. Can you give us more information on the love triangle?
I don’t want to spoil it, but let’s just say that not everything is as it seems. It will be obvious to the reader, sort of, but not to the characters themselves. Like I said, I’m not a huge fan of love triangles as a reader, so I really did not want to put one in a book as an author, but it’s integral to the plot and really a different view.

4. Have you always wanted to be a writer?
Yes. Ever since I was a little girl I’ve wanted to write. I have notebooks and folders full of ‘Chapter Ones’ and ‘Story Ideas’ from all through high school and college. These notes were jotted when I probably should have been studying or paying attention to the professor. Oops.

5. Will you ever write anything else besides YA or Paranormal?
Actually, the second book I am working on is a NA (New Adult) Contemporary novel about a college senior named Brynna, who is trying to live her life while constantly hiding from almost everyone, including her new love interest, that her father is a convicted serial killer. This one has been a lot of fun to write. It’s definitely been a different experience without a witch or vampire in sight!

6. I really liked Sydney. You’ve said we’ll see Sophia, but will we see her again too?
I’ve heard that from several readers which makes me happy.  I love Sydney too! So, short answer, yes. Long answer, the Rebel Writers, the wonderful writing group I’m a part of, have discussed putting out an anthology around Valentine’s Day. I think Sydney deserves her chance at some romance!

7. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
You have to get out there and mingle with the blogging/writing/reading world. Join discussion groups, follow Facebook pages, and put yourself out there. It can be time consuming, time you may want to spend writing, but you can meet some amazing people. And then, keep going. Don’t stop writing or reading. If possible, find yourself a good writing group to help keep you sane. They will understand what you’re going through and can support you in ways even your best friends and family cannot.

8. You’ve mentioned the Rebel Writers. Who are they and how have they influenced you?
The Rebel Writers is a writing group composed of Alex Tuttle, Caylie Marcoe, Regan Claire, Stormy Smith and Theresa Kay. We met as fans of indie author Rachel Higginson, who is the sweetest person and an amazing author, and we all decided we’d write our first books together. They are extremely talented authors and I feel so lucky to call them friends. If not for them, I never would have finished my first book, let alone two with more to come. They are truly like family.

9. How can our readers find you?
I can always be found on Facebook at: Kat Nichols, Author. My website is Kat Nichols, Author. My twitter handle is @Author_KatN and I’m on Instagram as katnicholsauthor.

SALOME

Bubbles and foam rose from the river floor as if there was an eruption below. Water sprayed my left cheek. A gurgled snort sounded beside us as a great black horse rose from the depths, river-weed tangled in its mane. This was no ordinary horse. It was a Kelpie. It turned to face me, eyes blazing like hot coals. The beast’s lips peeled back to reveal blood covered teeth. Crap. If I could reach the saddlebags, then maybe I could pull out the sword Gareth had gotten for me. I leaned to the side, reaching for the buckles. Moving at this pace and bouncing around, I couldn’t get hold of it.

Come on.

Adaba jerked to the side in an attempt to get to the shore. But it was too late. In one swift movement, the Kelpie latched onto my arm.

“No!” Pain shot through me like a bullet. I fought to stay in the saddle. My horse kicked out his hind legs, catching the Kelpie in the side. Still the creature wouldn’t release me.

Instead, it tugged harder ripping me halfway off my saddle. My knees tightened around Adaba’s sides, my fingers loosened as water slickened what grip I had. The Kelpie’s teeth sunk deeper into my arm. My hands slipped; my hold lost. Horror washed over me when I plunged into the dark, icy depths of the river. The coldness stung my skin. The creature dragged me deeper, and I kicked my legs, thrashing to free myself from it. Above me, all I saw were the distorted images of the sky as it faded from sight.

Synopsis

Centuries ago, sibling rivalry tore Aramith apart. As punishment, the losers were stripped of their immortal birthright and banished to Earth. There, they wasted away from old age and diseases. However, there is hope…

If a Shaw child, born on the 12th day of the 12th month offers her soul in a public sacrifice, then the exiles will be forgiven and welcomed home to Aramith.

Aubrey Shaw is that child, but dying for the exiles is not on her to-do list. Using her gift as a Jumper, Aubrey leaps between bodies to escape relentless shape-shifting hunters. Only, shedding her skin is not enough. Not when Joshua, her best-friend-turned-hunter, is hell-bent on dragging her to the altar.

Will Aubrey’s love for Joshua change his mind?

Or, will she have to trust the scarred stranger who shows up out of the blue cloaked in lies and secrets? Doing so means giving up on Joshua. But betting on Joshua’s love could do more than break her heart.

It could kill her.

Excerpt

Mom hobbled back to the center of the market. The hunters slinked out of shadowy corners to meet her. They moved as they did in the air, in V formation with Joshua at the head. The tall hunter and Rooster brought up the rear on the left and right. When he reached Mom, Joshua made a circular motion in the air with his thumb. The hunters fanned out, forming a circle around Mom.

Joshua heaved a deep breath. “Where is she?”

Mom’s voice was like steel on steel. “Gone.” “Gone where?” “If you think I’m telling you then you’re not only a traitorous bastard, you’re a fool.” I watched as Mom and Joshua stared at each other, neither one blinking or taking a breath. As the angry stare-off stretched on, the hunters exchanged uncomfortable glances and a low grumble moved around the circle.

One hunter, with arms like sculpted marble sniffed the air noisily with a bumpy nose. “Aubrey is close,” he said. “I can taste her in the air.”

“Silence,” Joshua barked. “But her scent—” “Use your eyes as well as your nose, idiot. It’s obvious Rose switched shirts with Aubrey.” The hunter crunched his knuckles. “I’m no idiot. You can barely see the damn thing.” Mom shook her head. “Lefu always said you’d make a good Captain one day. Pity he’s never wrong.” “Yeah, Pity.” Joshua’s eyes flickered to the gate and back to Mom. “The sacrifice isn’t —” “Sacrifice?” Mom cut him off. “Call it what it is, Joshua. Murder.” “It is not murder.” “She’s sixteen! She’s a child, and so are you. You should be taking her out on dates, not hunting her like a rabid dog.” “I wouldn’t have to hunt her if she would turn herself in. She’s meant to be on that altar, Rose. You can’t keep telling her otherwise.”

“But why her?” Mom demanded. “None of you stupid exiles can tell me why it has to be my daughter who pays the price for our sins.”

Joshua’s mouth opened and closed. Finally, he shook his head. “I don’t know, Rose. The duty fell to her.”

“To hell with duty,” Mom said, stabbing him in the chest with a finger. “And to hell with Azure! And to hell with Celo and all you foul exiles!”

“Enough,” Joshua boomed. His voice echoed in the sky like thunder causing Mom to yelp. “We are Aramithians, not humans,” he said. “Just because we’ve been exiled to this backward world for the last two centuries, doesn’t mean we can abandon our responsibilities of duty, obedience, and loyalty to Aramith.”

Mom balled her fists, and her chin rose defiantly in the air. “Like I said. To hell with duty.”

Sighing, Joshua raked a hand through his hair. “Look,” he said. “The sacrifice isn’t for another year. I can see to it Lefu lets you stay with Aubrey until then.”

“And then?” “That’s the best I can do,” Joshua said. “You won’t be pardoned.” Mom smiled a cruel smile that would have never worked on her old face. “Is thirty pieces of silver still the going rate?” “I’m not a traitor,” Joshua said. “Neither am I, but I’ll gladly die like one instead of letting you vipers bleed my child dry.”

A lovely mellifluous laugh came from the palm trees to the left of the circle. Bitterness flooded my mouth as Morgan stepped out. My sister had taken after my dad’s side of the family, from their pointy, elvish faces to their sylphlike bodies.

“Morgan,” Mom cried in an embarrassingly breathy voice.

With a spine as straight as an arrow and crimson dreadlocks touching her waist, Morgan stalked toward Mom. The hunters parted for her, their eyes darting to the splashes of pale flesh that peeked out of her carelessly wrapped cloak. Her shrewd, unblinking eyes stayed on Mom’s face.

“It must be nice having a mother who cares so much,” Morgan said in a scornful voice. “I wonder what that’s like.”

Excerpt from The Demon’s Grave by E.M. MacCallum

“Aidan,” I insisted in a whisper.

A few car lengths north of the Chevy a stereo crackled to life. An echoing voice sang followed by a choir of voices that doo de doo’ed in the background. The slow song sounded like something from the 1950's.

Read and I exchanged a curious glance as the echoing main voice mentioned a game. Read pulled his hand from mine and we both wiped our slick palms on our jeans.

“What is it?” I asked Aidan. “What should we be looking for?”

He didn’t answer, his eyes kept wandering to the cars then down the street and to the motorbikes.

Read’s shoulders sagged, exasperated. He looked ready to say something when the roar of an engine smothered the music as well as my yelp. It stopped Read cold.

Aidan jumped and grabbed my arm as if I were the one to save him.

Craning my neck to see if there was a single vehicle taking up the roadway, I saw none. It had been so loud I couldn’t pinpoint the direction it came from.

The music began to take over the street once more, a new song erupting from the crackling speakers.

Between shallow breaths, Aidan said, “come on.”

Before Read or I could question him, Aidan stood up and started in long, purposeful strides, the kind that was harder to stop.

Read nudged me to move, or rather shoved me. Panicked, we hurried to Aidan. Looking to him, our pace quickened to keep up. Aidan stared straight ahead. His lean figure was rigid, but he hadn’t slowed.

Keeping close to the buildings, we passed the occupied car playing music. I could see three teenage boys inside. The muffled vintage music carried through the window.

I felt the scream choke in my throat as we passed. The passengers didn’t have eyes.

Their shapeless pale faces lacked not only the eyes but also mouths. The skin where lips should be had stretched horizontally, sealing any opening. The only portion of their faces that was noticeable was the lump of their nose—without nostrils. Even their hair was all the same color, styled the same, with a part in the middle, and they wore the same collared shirt and slacks.

I thought to myself, it’s just a few of the faceless, nameless people of this city, like any other...right? Maybe the demon had a sense of sick, very sick, humor.

I could hear, the eerie chorus of voices within the car, making it all the more surreal.

The three boys in the car watched us pass, as is if they could see. They turned their heads as we hurried along and I found myself staring back for as long as I could.
