EXCERPT

The phone rang before my alarm. Hell hath no fury like a woman woken before her alarm. I fumbled to find the phone in the dark.

“Hello?” My voice cracked.

“Hey, Z. This is your reminder to pack your bag. You promised to cover tonight.”

“Ethan. You are sick to call me this early. I said I’ll be there. Now, leave me alone.” I ended the call without a goodbye.

The phone rang again before I could drop it back on the nightstand.

“What?” I answered.

“I’ve dusted your gloves, babe. You’re overdue.”

The call disconnected, and I smiled in the dark. Only Ethan, the huge pain in the butt I called friend, could annoy me and make me smile at the same time. He was right. I needed to go in and really purge.

Hitting the bag at home helped, but I suffered from a slow buildup. Ethan compared it to PMS. I grew moodier until I started an actual fight. Except the fights were never fair. In my anger, I pulled too much of my opponent’s emotions, and they tended to just stand there with a stupid smile as I hit them. But I couldn’t avoid the fights. I needed them. Hitting an actual person drained me way more than the bag, and it was the only thing that helped when I got like this. I hated fighting but didn’t see any other choice.

With a sigh, I slid from the sheets and shuffled to the bathroom. My long, red hair was a tangled mess, and I scowled at myself in the mirror. The green of my eyes seemed vivid against the bloodshot background.

I should have slept longer. I already felt edgy and knew it would be a long day.

About the Book
Title: THE LAST CHANGELING
Author: Chelsea Pitcher
Release Date: November 8, 2014
Pages: 360
Publisher: Flux
Formats:  Paperback, eBook, audiobook

A Kingdom at War . . .

Elora, the young princess of the Dark Faeries, plans to overthrow her tyrannical mother, the Dark Queen, and bring equality to faeriekind. All she has to do is convince her mother’s loathed enemy, the Bright Queen, to join her cause. But the Bright Queen demands an offering first: a human boy who is a “young leader of men.”

A Dark Princess In Disguise . . .

To steal a mortal, Elora must become a mortal—at least, by all appearances. And infiltrating a high school is surprisingly easy. When Elora meets Taylor, the seventeen-year-old who’s plotting to overthrow a ruthless bully, she thinks she’s found her offering . . . until she starts to fall in love.

About Chelsea

Chelsea Pitcher is a karaoke-singing, ocean-worshipping Oregonian with a penchant for wicked faerie tales. She began gobbling up stories as soon as she could read, and especially enjoys delving into the darker places to see if she can draw out some light. She is the author of THE S-WORD (Simon and Schuster), THE LAST CHANGELING (Flux), and THE LAST FAERIE QUEEN (Flux 2015).

1. What genre are your books?
This is actually a tricky question! The first book in the series, THE LAST CHANGELING, is “YA urban fantasy,” because it takes place primarily in the human world. But the second (and final) book in the series, THE LAST FAERIE QUEEN, takes place exclusively in the faerie world, so I would classify that as “YA fantasy.” But I wouldn’t call it “high fantasy” because the characters could, theoretically, return to the human world (as opposed to, say, LORD OF THE RINGS, where the characters couldn’t slip into the world as we know it).

2. What draws you to this genre?
I love urban fantasy because we get to explore how humans would react if they learned that magic does, in fact, exist in our world. Would they be thrilled, terrified, or something else entirely? Would they try to destroy those magical beings, or would they fall in love? In THE LAST FAERIE QUEEN, you’ll see all of the above!

3. Which actress would you like to see playing the lead character from THE LAST FAERIE QUEEN?
Such a hard question! It’s really difficult to match the image in my head to a real person. But I love this picture of Alicia Witt for Elora (if her hair was quite a bit longer). It kind of makes you wonder if she’s going to kiss you or kill you, which is perfect for Elora.

4. How much research do you do?
I’ve been studying faerie legends my entire life, so by the time I wrote THE LAST FAERIE QUEEN, I had a really good idea of what I wanted the world to look like. But there was still some difficulty, because I wanted to stay true to certain legends—faeries can’t lie, faeries have an aversion to iron—I also wanted to create a world that was unique. So, while several old legends show the Queen of the Bright Faeries as having pale skin and golden hair, in this version, she’s more of a forest queen, with warm brown skin and leaves growing from her hair. Meanwhile, the Queen of the Dark Faeries has milky-pale skin during the full moon and inky black skin during the dark moon. Writing the characters this way made perfect sense to me, because they are embodiments of nature as much as they are otherworldly. I hope readers enjoy getting to know them as much as I did!

5. What is the hardest thing about writing?
The process for every book is so different! Each time I finish a book, I think I have it figured out, and the next time I sit down to write something, the process that worked for the previous book turns out to be useless! For example, I used to always write books linearly. But with THE LAST FAERIE QUEEN, I kept fussing over the first hundred pages, and I knew that if I kept going like that, I’d never finish the book! So I gave myself permission to write the second half first. It was a weird thing to do, but it worked wonderfully, because I knew exactly what happened once the characters entered the Unseelie Court. The second half poured out of me, and then I got to go back to the opening with more insight on what needed to happen.

Thank you so much for having me!!!

(Still a Bad Boy, #1)
Publication date: November 2nd 2015
Genres: New Adult, Romance, Suspense

I can’t get him out of my mind, and I can’t keep myself out of his bed

Kendall

He wasn’t supposed to notice me. Jace Barlow: the most powerful man in the city. Mysterious, scarred, pure muscle and tattoos.

He was my first. That didn’t stop him from pinning me against a wall, using me for his own pleasure until I screamed his name.

Now my boss thinks I’m getting the scoop of the century, but all Jace is giving me is orgasm after leg-quivering orgasm. When he puts his hand on my throat and growls in my ear…

“You are mine.”

I know it’s true.

I’ve fallen hard and I’ve never felt safer…

Until I see him kill somebody.

Jace

I dedicated my life to taking down the Picolli Crime Family from the inside. I made a name for myself, the mafia’s most brutal enforcer. I worked my way up the chain, and my revenge came. A righteous bloodbath.

Then I took their place so they could never come back.

Nothing else has ever mattered. Until Kendall.

She was an innocent girl for me to defile, and then leave her ruined for other men like all the rest. But she makes me so hard I ache for release, and for the first time in my life, I want to have her again.

Kendall’s the chink in my armor my enemies have been looking for.

I don’t care.

She is mine and I’ll die before I give her up.

EXCERPT

After a brief hurricane of panic from everybody back in the office, I spent the entire afternoon on a computer researching Jace Barlow, determined to make part two of my interview infinitely less embarrassing than part one. I’d known he was secretive, but I didn’t realize just how little of his life had made it on to the internet.

Mr. Kinsley sent me some lines of questioning the brain-trust back in the office thought would be important to go through, but not until after trying to replace me at the dinner with a more experienced reporter. Barlow’s people shot that idea down.

This was my big chance, this was a once in a lifetime opportunity to show them what I could do. Everybody at The Weekly Enquirer, my family, everybody back home who thought I would live and die in Woodville, I’d show them all.

I couldn’t afford the kinds of things that most people who dined at Luc Monette’s wore, but I dressed up as well as I was able to. Even so, when I arrived early, the woman behind the counter looked down her nose at me until I said I was here to meet Jace Barlow.

After that, I was royalty as far as she was concerned. She even brought me a complimentary glass of wine while I waited.

It wasn’t easy to keep a level head. This was as exclusive a restaurant as existed anywhere in the city, the whole country even. Everywhere I looked, I saw faces I recognized from the news, from the magazines, even from the paper I worked for.

The instant he walked in the room, he caught my eye. He had so much presence it was like the universe revolved around him, the complete opposite to me.

It didn’t take him long to spot me either, as if I drew his eyes as much as he drew mine. He headed straight for me and I had this image of him picking me up and carrying me off into the sunset.

There I went again. What was it about him that made me forget who I was?

“Mr. Barlow.” I began to stand.

He held out his hand, halting me, before he sat down on the opposite side of the table. “Please. Just call me Jace for tonight.”

“Oh. OK. You can call me Kendall too.”

“A beautiful name for a beautiful woman.”

I glanced down at my glass of wine for a second, fighting off the shy blush that seemed to blossom anyway whenever he looked at me. Lines like that didn’t help my predicament.

Eventually, I managed to raise my eyes to his with a goofy smile on my face. “Thank you.”

“Have you ordered?” he asked.

“No, I was waiting for you.”

“Well, now you’ve got me, what are you going to do with me?”

It was an innocent question, but the way he said it and the look on his face gave me the impression that he was implying something. I didn’t know if it was just my imagination running wild again, not out of the question when I was around him, or if I was getting hit on by a multi-millionaire.

Blog Tour: DEATH BECOMES ME by Elizabeth Holloway with Giveaway

Death Becomes Me
(Call Me Grim #2)
by Elizabeth Holloway
Publication Date: November 2015
Genre: YA, Paranormal

Libbi and Aaron are Grim Reapers on the run. They may have escaped their hometown of Carroll Falls unscathed, and are together and alive (well, more or less), but they’ll soon find there’s a price to pay. A deadly one.

By escaping Carroll Falls, Libbi and Aaron have broken the Reaper’s covenant with Abaddon, aka Death himself – and now they’re right at the top of Abaddon’s Most Wanted list. There’s nowhere to hide, and not a single person, alive or dead, they can turn to for help.

But just as it's looking like the end of the line, Libbi hears word of a Reaper in hiding – a Reaper who once escaped Abaddon's wrath. Finding this mysterious Reaper might be the perfect solution… if Death doesn’t find them first.

EXCERPT

A Little Horror

“She’s in the house,” I say.

“I know.” He snatches his shoes from my hands and shoves his sockless feet into them. “We’ve got to get out of here.”

“How? She’s downstairs. We’ll run right into her.”

He glances at the wall behind him and shakes his head. Nope. Can’t get out that way.  He turns back around and points straight at the wall of junk that blocks the expansive attic.

“We run through all of that,” he says. “And when we get outside, we fly.”

As huge as the attic is, it looks like a postage stamp when I think of using it as a runway. Plus, I have to run through all of that stuff? I really wish I had more time to practice the Reaper powers before we left Carroll Falls. It would have been useful.

“That’s not enough of a head start for me, Aaron,” I say. “Still a novice, here.”

The attic door squeaks. A solid thump on the bottom step.

“No time for a better plan.” He seizes my hand. “Whatever happens, don’t let her touch you. Got it?”

I nod once.

And we run. Back the way we came. Straight through the wardrobe with the broken door. Through the leaning towers of boxes and mountains of clothes and papers and trash. Toward Bobby’s bedroom.

The attic stairs appear in the middle of the rubbish. We have to pass them if we want enough speed to fly when we reach the wall at the other end of the house.

An ashen hand slaps down on the railing at the top of the staircase. Annalise’s greasy, dark head pops up above the railing. Her head rotates. The skin on her neck cracks and greenish-yellow fluid leaks from the wound. Her eyes find us.

I was right. There are no eyes there. Just inky-black orbs.

“What are you doing?” The voice that oozes from her throat is deep, cold, menacing. But there’s no mistaking the surprise in it. “You don’t belong here.”

Oily tendrils of blackness unfurl from the little girl’s shadow like tentacles. They spill over the railing and crawl across the floor in front of us. The coppery scent of decomposition fills the space. Whoever she used to be, she’s a corpse now. A reanimated, rotting corpse. Mothballs suddenly don’t smell so bad.

“Jump.” Aaron says and I do. We sail over whatever it is that seeps from her shadow as we sprint past her.

Annalise reaches for my arm. I jerk my elbow across my body before she touches me and the breeze from her fingertips grazes my skin.

It was just the wind that touched me, I’m sure, but for a moment my vision blurs. A flash of light replaces the junk-filled attic, then pale, twisted, writhing bodies. Blood. Broken bones. Pain. So much pain. And fear.

Just as quickly as it came, the vision disappears. I almost lose my breakfast on the floor, but I somehow manage to keep running. We barrel through another mountain of junk—more furniture and boxes—and into Bobby’s bedroom.

CALL ME GRIM

The truck should have turned Libbi Piper into a Libbi Pancake—and it would have, too, if Aaron hadn't shown up and saved her life. The problem? Aaron's the local Grim Reaper . . . and he only saved Libbi's life because he needs someone to take over his job. Now, Libbi has two days to choose between dying like she was supposed to, or living a lonely life as Death Incarnate. Talk about a rock and a hard place. And the choice goes from hard to sucktastic when her best friend shows up marked: condemned as a future murderer. Libbi could have an extra week to stop the murder and fix the mark . . . but only if she accepts Aaron's job as Reaper, trapping herself in her crappy town forever, invisible and inaudible to everyone except the newly dead. But, if she refuses? Her best friend is headed straight for Hell.
