 Summary:
The-Bone-Whistle-3D-Paperback-eReaderDarcy burned with the pain of knowing she’d failed. What happened when a prophecy didn’t come true? It must not have been much of a prophecy in the first place. And if they couldn’t trust in that, then they couldn’t trust in anything at all. Five years ago, Darcy first received the prophecy of the Six, which stated she and her friends would save the land of Alitheia from a shadowy foe. For five years, she hasn’t known what the end will look like, but she certainly didn’t expect this. Thrust back into Alitheia through unexpected means, Darcy winds up alone, scared, and without her recent memory. As she struggles to regain her lost memories and reunite with the ones she loves, she pieces together the prophecies and the oracles to find they all converge into one story¾a story that tells her just how much she’ll have to give to save both worlds, and everyone she loves. Pursued through Alitheia by forces desperate to kill them, Darcy and her friends take a journey fraught with danger that will lead them, inevitably, to the final confrontation with the Shadow. Armed with newfound knowledge of how the prophecy of the Six will play out, Darcy and the others must have faith in the face of mounting odds and adversity. Ultimately, the greatest courage of all belongs not to those who give something of themselves, but to those who let go of what they could never control. Filled with stunning losses, heart-wrenching reunions, unexpected twists, and the power of love and sacrifice, the conclusion to The Gateway Chronicles will leave you breathless and begging for more from author K. B. Hoyle.

In your experience what are the hardest scenes to write? (No Spoilers)
The hardest scenes to write, hands down, are the romantic scenes. I fully admit I agonize over how much to say/show, what language I should use, how to make them realistic, and how not to make them nauseating and gushy. When I was writing The Bone Whistle, I fully stalled out at one point trying to write a romantic scene between Darcy and Tellius. I think I must have written it five times and deleted it five times before taking a week off from writing to clear my head. Finally I was able to return to it and knock out a scene I’m pretty happy with in the end, but man… that was a difficult one. Maybe one reason why these scenes are so difficult for me to write is because a portion of my readership is very young ⎯ as young as 8 or 9, so I want to be absolutely sure I’m not introducing them to any concepts, terms, or ideas their parents haven’t had a chance to discuss with them yet. On the other hand, romantic love and affection in a story are part of what makes a good story (in many cases), so I also don’t want to shy away from those sorts of scenes. My older readers, too, will expect to see enough romance to fulfill the natural impulses I’ve set up between some of the characters. So basically, the name of the game with romance in my books is tasteful, realistic, fulfilling scenes of love and affection. And that can be a really difficult balance to pull off!
What gets you in the mood for writing? Do you have particular habits, places, music?
Hmmm… what gets me in the mood for writing? Um, how about being alive? Ha! But seriously, it’s in my blood, and it’s rare that I have to search for inspiration to do it. But once I sit down to work, I do have a few particular habits that help keep me focused. First of all, I need either absolute silence, or classical music turned loud enough in my ear buds to drown out any noises. When I write at Starbucks or Panera, I have to use my ear buds to stay focused, and I absolutely can’t listen to music with lyrics. I also can’t be in a room that has a TV in it. I can be distracted by even the possibility of watching a show when I should be writing, so it’s best for me just to get away. I do have a private office in the house, and when it’s cleaned out (translation ⎯ I’m a slob), it’s a great place for me to work. I usually don’t eat when I’m writing, because I hate having to take the time to clean crumbs off my fingers so I can continue typing, but I love to have either coffee or tea. Honestly, when I’m out, I drink coffee, and when I’m home, I make tea. Good tea, too. I’m a total tea snob, and I don’t apologize for that!

Praise for The Bone Whistle
"I really enjoyed this series from the opening pages of THE SIX, where we meet 13 year old, solipsistic, angst-ridden Darcy, through to the final pages of THE BONE WHISTLE where we leave her behind, matured and likely as grown as she will ever be."  - Suzy Goodreads Review
