A mistaken identity…
…a proposal that changes everything!
She smiled as she glanced at the dog, who was now sitting by her side as though they’d been together for years. He looked up at her with such warmth in his big brown eyes. What had she done to deserve his trust? And yet here he was sitting next to her, waiting for the food she’d promised him.
She moved to her luggage and the cloth shopping bag she’d draped around the handle. Inside, she had some fresh baked bread, meats and cheeses. Quite honestly, she wasn’t sure what dogs were allowed to eat but she couldn’t imagine that in a pinch a sandwich would be totally frowned upon. And so that’s what she did. She made her new friend a sandwich and one for herself. Her stomach rumbled in anticipation. She hadn’t eaten yet that day. She’d been getting by on caffeine, but her stomach was in utter rebellion over its liquid diet.
She was quite tempted to take a bite of her sandwich first, but when she glanced over at those needy eyes, she couldn’t resist him. This pup had such a sweet gentle soul.
“Here you go.” She held out a quarter of the sandwich.
The dog carefully took it without so much as nipping her. He chewed...and chewed...and chewed...and finally swallowed. She’d been worried he wouldn’t like the sandwich, but as he looked at her for more, she realized he’d liked it just fine. She took a bite of her own sandwich. Not bad. The dog started impatiently nudging her elbow with his cold wet nose.
“Okay. Okay. I’m getting it.” As she picked up the plate with his sandwich, she said, “You know, now that you’re eating me out of house and home, I’ll have to go back to the store.” She held out the next piece. “Here you go—”
“Hey! What are you doing?”
The boom of the unfamiliar male voice made her jump. The plate slipped from her hand. It crashed to the floor. Little pieces of glass pelted her ankles and feet.
